Julie Helen: I'm tuned in to the Pam and Liam show — are you?

The discourse has been set alight by the recent romance rumours between 73-year-old Liam Neeson and 58-year-old Pamela Anderson. I am a woman of middle age and although the rational side of my brain absolutely knows this relationship cannot be real, I am swooning at it and hoping for it, while going down every rabbit hole I can to watch interviews, hear the sickly sweet compliments and the girly giggling that ensues every time Pam seems to be in the company of our beautiful Liam. He on the other hand, has a glorious glint in his eye that shows anyone who knows the Irish sense of humour that he is rising the whole world and watching us fall for it. In fact, they both are; they are seasoned actors and professionals at courting the press, teaching us a lesson in ageing well and not giving a hoot what anyone thinks. They are relishing the distraction deployed to raise the profile of their reboot of The Naked Gun. I am here for it all; in fact we all are, because so much of what is going on in the world seems senseless and we feel helpless. Just for a little while, we want to feel the warm glow of flirtation and romance and the mere hint of love in the air. Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson at 'The Naked Gun' New York Premiere last month. The pair only met on the set of the movie while portraying Frank Drebin Jr and Beth Davenport, in May 2024. Photo:An important element of my investment in this love affair between Liam and Pam has to be because in their separate lives they have been met with trials, tribulations and tragedy - they give hope to all of us for a bit of craic in later life. Pam shot to fame as a playboy cover girl, gracing the front page a record-breaking 14 times and being the provocative female star of Baywatch in her signature red swimsuit. She has been married multiple times, including to Tommy Lee, the drummer of Mötley Crüe, with whom she has two sons and weathered the storm of the first sex-tape debacle in the mid-1990s. An electrician stole a tape the couple had made themselves and took it to a production house to be watched and copied. The scandal that followed included multiple visits to court where the unfortunate couple shelled out millions of dollars trying to stop the distribution of the film and suing various parties involved in distribution. The whole thing went on for decades, with an initial round of serious slut shaming, and has been revisited by feminist commentators in recent years as a particularly sordid incidence of exploitation of a famous woman. It led to a very quiet professional period for Pamela. She turned to activism in animal rights and lived a quiet life with her children, but in 2023 she again made the headlines, this time for going make-up free for Paris Fashion week. At the time, she called it freeing and fun, and no longer wears make-up, a radical act for a woman who for much of the 1990s was one of the most famous faces in the world. Liam Neeson, at 73, has been through serious tragedy. He was married to actress Natasha Richardson until her death in 2009 after a skiing accident. He has tended to keep his personal life private, although he is known for being a devoted father to his two sons with Richardson. Neeson is a beloved Irish actor, sort of a dad to the nation - or at least, those of us who grew up with him as Michael Collins and the dad in Taken. As a girl I felt protected when he delivered his terrifying threats in that popular franchise. I wanted to hear his passionate speeches as Michael Collins but most of all our hearts both swelled and broke for him in 'Love Actually' where he played a widower supporting the romantic aspirations of his grieving 10-year-old son; that one was close to the bone. Of course, Liam has countless other performances under his belt, but he has only recently stepped into comedy with a cameo in Derry Girls, showing off his stellar deadpan delivery. I think he is carrying that delivery into his answering of questions about his supposed relationship with Pam. Nobody, almost including themselves, knows if he is serious or not. The pair only met on the set of The Naked Gun while portraying Frank Drebin Jr and Beth Davenport, in May 2024; they can hardly be head over heels already. They embrace the slapstick humour of the 1988 original Naked Gun and they have been running with the romance rumours and carrying us with them all the way. Julie Helen: 'I am a woman of middle age and although the rational side of my brain absolutely knows this relationship cannot be real, I am swooning at it and hoping for it, while going down every rabbit hole I can to watch interviews, hear the sickly sweet compliments and the girly giggling that ensues every time Pam seems to be in the company of our beautiful Liam.' Liam is quoted repeatedly as saying 'I am madly in love with her' when referring to Pamela in media interviews, but the rest of the sentence is often omitted where he said 'she is terrific to work with'. Pamela was quoted last month as saying: 'I think I have a friend forever in Liam, we have a connection that is sincere, loving and he is a good guy.' Amid all of the publicity for Naked Gun we were treated to countless Getty images of Pam kissing Liam on the red carpet and back came the glints... they are taking their game to the next level and really leaning into the press cycle of the summertime. The producers of The Naked Gun must be jumping for joy as the publicity of the Liam and Pam romance means it is bound to be a box office hit. I'll enjoy the fun while it lasts.

THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit. Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland's first 'shopping frenzy'. During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne's 'Better Value' bargains. Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 - starting with apples and oranges. The retailer said: "Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town. "Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong. "Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas." The retailer's first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960. They added: "In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed. "Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England." Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people. 5 The soft set will take you from summer to autumn effortlessly Credit: 5 Prices start from €20 Credit: 5 The co-ord is set to sell out fast Credit: Garrett White - Commissioned by The Sun Dublin
