'We begged for protection,' says daughter of Harjeet Dhadda, Indian-origin businessman killed in Canada

, the daughter of Brampton-based Harjeet Singh Dhadda, issued a statement after her father was shot several times at a parking lot in Mississauga, Ontario, in what the police called a 'targeted' shooting.
Gurleen said his father was a proud Canadian resident since 1997 and worked hard to build a life in Canada, where he had to die -- despite clear signs of danger.
Gurleen said her father was receiving repeated threats and extortion calls and there was a possible attack in 2023. All of this was reported to the police but there was no help. "We begged for protection. But our cries for help went unanswered. The system that was supposed to keep us safe failed him," she wrote.
Blaming the government for failing to curb extortion and targeted violence, Gurleen wrote that the community is outraged. "Why are innocent people left defenceless while the threats grow louder? When the authorities fail to protect us, what options do we have?" the statement read.

On Wednesday, the 51-year-old insurance broker and businessman was approached by suspects at the parking lot before noon and was shot.
When officers arrived, they said they found Dhadda with "obvious signs of trauma".
The shooters fled the scene in a stolen black 2018 Dodge Challenger who has been recovered.

earlier reported that the Lawrence Bishnoi group claimed responsibility for Dhadda's murder. They said Dhadda was assisting Khalistan Tiger Force chief Arsh Dalla with bail.

Dhadda's son Tanveer Singh Dhadda said his father was not involved in anything criminal. "My father did not deserve this. He was not involved in anything criminal. He lived an honest life. Yet, those who came to harm him were armed with illegal weapons, operating with complete disregard for the law and seemingly without fear of consequences," he said.

2008 Mumbai attacks: Delhi court allows Tahawwur Rana to talk to kin over phone
A Delhi court on Monday allowed jailed 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana to speak to his family members over a phone call. Special Judge Chander Jit Singh allowed Rana the reprieve only one time. The call would be in line with the jail manual and under the supervision of the Tihar Jail authority, the judge said. The court also called for a fresh report on Rana's health within 10 days from Monday. Advocate Piyush Sachdeva from Delhi Legal Services Authority was appointed to represent Rana. Rana is accused of conspiring with Headley and operatives of designated terrorist organisations Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Harkat-ul-Jihadi Islami (HUJI) along with other Pakistan-based co-conspirators, to carry out the three-day terror siege of India's financial capital. On November 26, 2008, a group of 10 Pakistani terrorists went on a rampage, carrying out a coordinated attack on a railway station, two luxury hotels and a Jewish centre, after they sneaked into India's financial capital using the sea route in the Arabian Sea. The call will be strictly conducted in accordance with jail regulations and under the supervision of a senior official from the Tihar jail authorities, reported news agency ANI. The Patiala House Court has also sought a detailed status report on Rana's health issues, which must be submitted within 10 days. Tahawwur Rana had filed a petition in a Delhi court for allowing him to communicate with his family. Rana has requested access to jail-provided facilities for family interaction, in accordance with regulations. Meanwhile, the ministry of home affairs has appointed Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, Senior Advocate Dayan Krishnan, and Advocate Narender Mann as lead prosecutors in the National Investigation Agency ( NIA ) case against Tahawwur Rana.
