Florida football earns commitment from blue-chip cornerback CJ Bronaugh in 2026 cycle
Another day, another commitment for Florida football.
On Wednesday, the Gators added four-star cornerback CJ Bronaugh out of Winter Garden (Florida) Windermere to its 2026 recruiting class with a verbal pledge. The 6-foot-1-inch, 166-pound defender had previously committed to the Nebraska Cornhuskers — whom he had pledged to back in November — but recently de-committed, opening the door for Billy Napier and Co. to swoop in and snatch the talent.
Bronaugh holds 26 total offers with the Florida State Seminoles also in the mix, as well as the Penn State Nittany Lions and Missouri Tigers. He made an official visit in Gainesville back on May 30, followed by a trip to Lincoln for an OV with the Huskers and one in Tallahassee last weekend with FSU.
Alas, the Orange and Blue prevailed... for now, at least.
CJ Bonaugh's relationship with Florida football
"I really like the culture that Florida has," Bronaugh previously told Swamp247. "The school is in a good area, has good facilities and is in the SEC."
Defensive backs' coach Deron Wilson has spearheaded the efforts to get the Central Florida product into the Swamp, as well as Napier. Their approach is the same that has been seen across the program's recruiting efforts over the past few years, which focuses on fostering close relationships with the young prospects.
"Since Coach Wilson has gotten to Florida, he's been hitting me up a lot to let me know I'm important to him... He's a really good person. If you put coaching to the side, he's just a really good dude to spend time around," Bronaugh notes.
"Coach Napier is even talking with me and my family a lot... they are definitely showing they want me."
CJ Bronaugh's Recruiting Summary
Bronough is ranked No. 99 overall and No. 12 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite while the On3 industry ranking has him at Nos. 106 and 14, respectively.
"Ascending defensive back prospect with some of the best speed markers in the class," 247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins begins.
"Hasn't faced the stiffest competition to date, but turned heads spring before senior year at an Under Armour Next Camp in Orlando where he not only tested off the charts, but also locked down one side of the field in coverage. Meets key length thresholds as he has been verified at over 6 feet and is equipped with some additional length in the arms.
"Straight-line burst and sideline-to-sideline range is optimal for a single or two-high safety role, but warrants a look at corner as he will fight for positioning out on the perimeter and has the agility to mirror most weapons. Not afraid to take risks and jump routes, which led to three pick-sixes as a junior.
"Serviceable as an open-field tackler on Fridays, but improved play strength would go a long way on Saturdays, especially if he's going to be asked to fit corridors. Will need to soak up coaching and keep perfecting his craft, but should be viewed as a traits-heavy secondary player that could emerge as a bonafide playmaker for a Power Four program with his frame and acceleration."

In a tight battle with Oklahoma, head coach and the Gators have edged out the Sooners for another big-time recruiting win in The Swamp. Baylor and Houston were also finalists for the 6-foot-1, 190-pounder. Groce is the No. 60 overall prospect and No. 6 WR in the 2026 cycle, according to the , a weighted average that utilizes all major recruiting media companies. He's also the No. 7 player in Texas. Earlier on Monday, Groce announced that his decision was on the way. Oklahoma had been the team trending for weeks after official visits in June, but Florida had continued to stay in the picture. Rivals' Steve Wiltfong reported later on Monday that with both staffs. 'He had a few things he wanted to run by all the schools,' Groce's father Rashad said. 'A little final negotiating point from his side and see what they thought and where they meet him on it and get the business part out of the way and make his decision off that.' In the end, Florida won out. Groce now becomes the top-ranked commit in the Gators' 2026 class — which ranks inside the top 15 of the Rivals Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. 'Florida came on real strong,' the elder Groce told Wiltfong. 'When he narrowed it down to Florida, it was like where did they come from. Class-act coaching staff over there. They showed a lot of interest and consistent interest. I got to know the coaches on every team he finalized it too and they have a good coaching staff over there.' Gators' big summer continues All but one of Florida's 19 commitments this cycle have joined the fold since the beginning of June. Groce is the first addition in August, following five commits that came last month. Duncanville (Texas) four-star EDGE is the other big win out of the Lone Star State for UF. Florida QB DJ Lagway is throwing 70 passes a day while rehabbing a strained calf
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida quarterback DJ Lagway is throwing 70 passes a day while working his way back from a strained left calf. Coach Billy Napier said Monday that Lagway is 'on schedule' with his rehab but will remain 'modifed for a while' in practice. The sophomore who went 6-1 in seven starts last season sat out Saturday's scrimmage and has yet to take part in 11-on-11 team drills. The 15th-ranked Gators open the season Aug. 30 against Long Island University. 'His workload is high,' Napier said. 'It's just not with a pass rush, you know? We're controlling the environment, trying to take care of him from a soft-tissue standpoint.' Lagway strained a calf muscle while running with teammates a week before the Gators opened training camp. It was the latest injury for the Heisman Trophy hopeful who missed spring practice with a shoulder injury after undergoing sports hernia surgery. Florida's star player also was limited last fall with shoulder soreness and slowed in November because of a strained left hamstring. 'Any football player would be better off taking the reps,' Napier said. 'The key is to be creative in terms of how we format practice, format the walkthrough. We've got to maximize all the mental reps, the process reps, the communication reps. 'It's not ideal. That's the way I've tried put it in the past, and I still kind of stand by that. In a perfect world, he'd be 100% and taking every single rep. But he's not able to do that.' The silver lining: Lagway's absence has allowed the Gators to get a better look at three QBs vying for the backup job. And freshman Tramell Jones Jr. has been so impressive that he's now pushing returner Aidan Warner and college journeyman Harrison Bailey for the spot behind Lagway. Napier called Jones' performance 'buzz worthy.' 'He's still got to operate much quicker, got to process quicker, communicate better under the gun and the play clock, his ability to manage the problems as they arise. All those things need to improve,' Napier said. 'But he throws a really good ball. He's very accurate. He's got arm talent, and I think he's a smart kid.' Lagway completed 60% of his passes for 1,915 yards, with 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 2024. He took over the starting role after Graham Mertz tore a knee ligament at Tennessee in October.
