Several people were killed and many others injured after a passenger train derailed in south-western Germany on Sunday, security sources told dpa.
According to initial findings by the federal police in Stuttgart, the capital of the state of Baden-Württemberg, some 100 people were on the derailed train. So far, the police are assuming at least three people have been injured, said a spokesman.
At least two carriages of a regional express train derailed at around 6:10 pm (1610 GMT) near the town of Riedlingen in Baden-Württemberg. There had been a storm there beforehand.
Video footage from the scene showed emergency services from the fire brigade and rescue service working on the derailed carriages to gain access to the passengers. Loud shouting could also be heard.
The footage showed several derailed carriages, with at least one overturned. Fallen trees are also visible at the accident site.
The Reutlingen control centre reported a so-called "mass casualty incident," a term used by emergency services to describe a situation where a large number of injured people need to be treated.
Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Thomas Strobl was making his way to the accident site on Sunday evening to gain an impression of the rescue operations, his spokesman said.
The federal police spokesman could not initially provide any information on the cause of the accident. The train was on its way from the town of Sigmaringen to city of Ulm, both in Baden-Württemberg.

Central Minnesota man dies after falling into tanker trailer

An Eden Valley, Minnesota, man died Tuesday morning when he fell into a tanker trailer while trying to clean it. The Stearns County Sheriff's Office says deputies responded to 23588 County Road 34 in Eden Lake Township around 9:45 a.m. Tuesday. They found a 25-year-old man who had fallen inside the 42-foot tanker trailer. The man, Elder Josue Salgado Gonzalez, was unresponsive. There was 1.5 feet of water inside the tanker at the time, the sheriff's office said. Gonzalez was cleaning the trailer with a hose before he was found, officials said. He was taken to the hospital, and despite lifesaving measures, was pronounced dead. Eden Valley is roughly 80 miles west of Minneapolis.

Horst Mahler, 89, Dies; Voice of the German Far Left, Then the Far Right

Horst Mahler, a German lawyer who over his long career lurched from a starring role in the violent world of 1970s far-left radicalism to spouting neo-Nazi hate speech in the 2000s as a leading figure in the country's far-right movement, died on Sunday in Berlin. He was 89. His lawyer, Jan Dollwetzel, confirmed the death, in a hospital. Over the decades, many 1960s radicals came to renounce their youthful idealism. What set Mr. Mahler apart was the vast distance he traveled across the political spectrum — from Communist revolutionary to Holocaust denier — not to mention his prominence in each camp. In 1970, he helped found the Red Army Faction, or R.A.F., a guerrilla group that terrorized German society for years. Three decades later, he returned to the national spotlight when he successfully defended the far-right National Democratic Party of Germany against an effort to ban it. Mr. Mahler spent long stretches of his adult life in prison — first for his part in a string of bank robberies by the R.A.F. and then, in the 2000s and 2010s, for repeatedly denying the Holocaust and praising Adolf Hitler, both of which are crimes in Germany. Many of Mr. Mahler's erstwhile comrades on the left, including Gerhard Schröder, who went on to become chancellor, and Joschka Fischer, who later became foreign minister, considered him a tragic figure, if not mentally deranged. Vince McMahon in ‘Horrific' Car Crash at ‘Same Time' Hulk Hogan Died

Ex-WWE chief Vince McMahon was involved in a high-speed car crash last Thursday (July 24) around 9 am, the same time pro-wrestling legend Hulk Hogan is believed to have passed away. According to the crash report obtained by TMZ, the incident happened in Connecticut on Thursday morning when McMahon's 2024 Bentley rammed into the back of a 2023 BMW 430 and collided with a median wooden-beam guardrail. Debris from the accident landed on the left side of the two-lane highway, causing a third vehicle to crash. The impact caused the airbags to be deployed on McMahon's Bentley and the BMW. All three drivers were wearing seatbelts, and nobody was injured in the collision, though all three vehicles needed to be towed from the scene. Barbara Doran, the woman driving the BMW, later took to Facebook to share photos from the crash and explain her side of the story. 'Lucky to have survived a horrific car crash on the way up to catch the ferry to Martha's Vineyard last Thursday morning. Both cars totaled,' she wrote. She continued, 'Vince McMahon, former chair of WWE, hit me going 80-90mph as I drove in the right lane of the narrow Merritt Highway. I and the dog are mostly fine, but was lucky to have kept control of the car, more or less, as I shot off the road after being catapulted over 100 yards.' Doran added that an 'unmarked state trooper' had been following the 79-year-old McMahon as he 'sped in and out of cars down the highway.' 'Both front wheels of McMahon's Bentley were sheared off and his airbags deployed, probably saving him from significant injury,' she added. 'The trooper told me afterwards that McMahon saw me last minute and swerved, smashing into my left rear, but that if he had hit me full on, there might've been a very different ending for me.' Per TMZ, McMahon was issued a misdemeanor summons for reckless driving and following too closely resulting in an accident. He is scheduled to appear in court late next month. Hogan, who played a significant role in the success and popularity of McMahon's WWE, died on Thursday morning following a medical emergency at his home in Clearwater, Florida. McMahon paid tribute to the Hulkster on social media later that day. 'Hulk Hogan was the greatest WWE Superstar of ALL TIME, someone who was loved and admired around the world,' McMahon wrote on X. 'He was a trailblazer, the first performer who transitioned from being a wrestling star into a global phenomenon.' McMahon stepped down as CEO and chairman of WWE in June 2022 following allegations of sexual misconduct and hush-money payments. However, he returned to the company just six months later, overseeing content development. In January 2024, following further reports of sexual assault from former WWE employee Janel Grant, McMahon resigned from WWE and its parent company, TKO. Solve the daily Crossword
