Gin-soaked vintage vibes in Sect 17, PJ

Sanctuary beckons with unique menu and nostalgic ambience
MENTION Section 17 in Petaling Jaya and it conjures up images of an upscale neighbourhood filled with interesting, whimsical eateries and bars.
Along Jalan 17/10 lies a cafe called Tujoh, well-known for its eclectic menu and ambience. It even has a display of TV sets and radios from yesteryear.
The sense of nostalgia takes you to another level as you ascend the narrow staircase next to Tujoh, to Mrs Jones' Parlour.
Since its inception in 2017, this speakeasy bar has carved a name for itself as a place reminiscent of your grandma's house.
Instead of neon lights and booming music, you are greeted by a gentle hum of conversation, cosy corners of what were once people's bedrooms, and louvre windows that creak softly in the breeze.
The rattan chairs and beaded string curtains welcome you with a familiar hug.
The place is replete with old clocks and a retro TV box in the corner which looks like it once played Sunday cartoons for a room full of children.
A leopard tree grows in the central courtyard of the cafe and bar.
A graceful leopard tree grows in the centre, between the two floor levels, blurring the line between indoors and outdoors.
It is framed by a light metal fence that gives the area a gentle courtyard feel – intimate yet open, like a family patio that has been lovingly reclaimed as a bar.
Soft purple lighting casts a glow over a weathered wood table, and the bar itself sits just beyond, inviting you to wander over for a chat and a sip.
This leafy heart of the space is what makes it feel like a sanctuary.
But, who is Mrs Jones?
That is a story best told over a drink or three.
Just ask any of the friendly faces behind the bar, and they may share the lore of the matriarch whose name now graces this charming gin parlour.
As the buzz from the busy street outside recedes, the mood in Mrs Jones' Parlour becomes slower and more sentimental.
That Ribena Feeling (top left) and Mary Me.
Time feels like it's paused for a moment, just long enough for a quiet conversation and a perfect gin and tonic.
Mrs Jones' Parlour is, at heart, a love letter to gin.
Bottles from around the world – Australia, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Portugal and Scotland – line the back wall, each with a little story behind it.
You'll find classic gin and tonics, house-infused gins and signature cocktails that taste like they were made just for you.
The four recommended tipples were Ah Ma's Prune and Tonic, That Ribena Feeling, Mary Me, Rose and Gin Daisy.
I immediately took to the prune tea-infused gin and tonic as it is one of those super refreshing cocktails in our humid weather.
Rose and Gin Daisy (left) and Ah Ma's Prune and Tonic.
It may taste like it, but not one drop of that blackcurrant drink from our childhood is in That Ribena Feeling.
Instead, it's a clever concoction of lemon juice, hibiscus syrup, egg white, violet liquor and gin.
For fruity lovers, Mary Me, Rose is a fun, cheeky swirl of strawberry purée, lemon brightness, and silky egg white foam –lifted by a fragrant duet of rosemary and strawberry-infused gin.
And, in true grandma's house-fashion, you won't go hungry either.
Thanks to its spot above Tujoh, you can bring up a plate from downstairs to pair with your drinks, just like raiding the kitchen mid-visit.
MRS JONES' PARLOUR, No.617a, Jalan 17/10, Section 17, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. (Tel: 018-285 9008). Business hours: 4pm - 12am. Closed on Sunday.

Saggy pants and waistbands: K-pop stars revive another Y2K fashion trend

Tarzzan of boyband All Day Project has been spotted multiple times layering underwear in contrasting prints, sometimes even matching them to his outerwear. Photo: Instagram/Tarzzan In today's K-pop scene, showing one's underwear is no longer likely to be a wardrobe malfunction. It is a fashion statement. A fashion trend known as sagging, where pants are worn low enough to reveal the waistband of one's undergarments, is making a comeback among young K-pop idols. The look was once popular in the 1990s and early 2000s, often associated with the Y2K era. Many from that time still remember it vividly. "I remember Justin Bieber always wearing his pants this way in paparazzi shots. I used to mimic the look, but it wasn't easy," said Park Jung-min, 34. "I walked uncomfortably." Back then, some South Koreans who disliked the trend jokingly said it looked like someone had pooped their pants. Many millennials of the time referred to it as the "poop-in-the-pants look". Read more: Millennials ditched 'cringe' Y2K fashion... but Gen Zs are paying to wear it However, the revival is now unmistakable. Fashion icon Jennie of Blackpink embraced the look with a red cropped top and black parachute pants, finishing the outfit with matching red underwear that peeked out above her pants. Aespa's Karina and Giselle also styled their outfits to leave the elastic band or lace trim of their panties visible, a move that quickly went viral with fans. Natty of girl group Kiss of Life also joined the trend, posting a photo on the group's Instagram with her pants unbuttoned to reveal part of her underwear's waistband. But perhaps the boldest take on the look comes from Tarzzan of boyband All Day Project. Known for his experimental style, he's been spotted multiple times layering underwear in contrasting prints, sometimes even matching them to his outerwear. While it's clear that the trend is circulating among K-pop idols, not everyone is sold. 'If a celebrity wears it, it's fashion. If a regular person does it, it just looks weird,' reads one online comment under an article introducing the trend. I'd think they lost their mind.' However, the broader 'underwear-as-fashion' movement seems to be gaining traction, especially when it comes to tops that resemble camisoles. On Instagram, Rose of Blackpink recently posted photos wearing a lace camisole, channeling the 'underwear, but make it fashion' vibe. 'We're seeing more Gen Z consumers embrace underwear not just for its function, but as a styling piece like Rose,' a fashion industry insider said. According to South Korean fashion firm E-Land World, sales from January to July in the homewear category of its women's lingerie brand Evelyn, which includes stylish, lingerie-inspired clothing, rose nearly tenfold compared to the same period last year. – The Korea Herald/ANN

YG Entertainment said Monday that the track reached the top spot on Sunday, following 2022 hits Pink Venom and Shut Down, according to a report published by Yonhap News Agency. The track also topped the iTunes Top Songs chart in 60 countries and regions. During Sunday's concert, global pop star Bruno Mars made a surprise appearance to perform APT., his collaborative single with Blackpink member Rose. Blackpink debuted in 2016 under YG Entertainment and has since become one of the world's leading K-pop acts.
