2 Dead, Several Injured In Stampede At Religious Event In Madhya Pradesh
Two women were killed and nearly a dozen others hospitalised after a stampede at the overcrowded Kubereshwar Dham in Madhya Pradesh's Sehore on Tuesday, just a day ahead of the much-publicised Kanwar Yatra led by storyteller Pradeep Mishra.
The tragedy unfolded as a sea of devotees surged through Kubereshwar Dham, overwhelming the arrangements and triggering chaos at multiple spots.
The stampede occurred when a massive crowd gathered outside a puja material shop, causing several women to fall. In the ensuing crush, two were fatally injured, while others lay sprawled in distress suffocated, dizzy, and unconscious.
Witnesses described scenes of absolute disorder, with elderly devotees collapsing under the pressure and volunteers scrambling to pull bodies from the crowd. The situation was so dire that it reportedly took over 90 minutes to ferry the injured to the district trauma center.
The incident has once again raised serious questions about crowd management and administrative preparedness, especially as the event was a planned religious gathering with an expected massive footfall.
Despite claims by the administration and organisers that they had made arrangements for the stay of over 4,000 pilgrims and full-scale prasad distribution across key locations, the system collapsed under pressure a day ahead of the Kanwar Yatra.
Meanwhile, traffic on the Indore-Bhopal highway remains paralysed, with devotees stranded and ambulances struggling to move through the jam.
Sehore MLA Sudesh Rai, while expressing grief, attempted to defend the authorities. "It's unfortunate. I've informed the Chief Minister. The administration made full arrangements, but the crowd unexpectedly increased. I will go to the spot and assess what went wrong," he said.
However, critics are already pointing fingers. The police had announced diversion and parking plans to manage the Kanwar Yatra, set to begin at midnight of August 5, but those measures had not been implemented at the time of the incident.
Several devotees fell ill due to the scorching heat, humidity, and discomfort. They are currently being treated at the hospital.
Upon receiving information, the IG Bhopal, SP, and Collector rushed to the spot to assess the situation.
The situation is now under control, but despite being a day ahead of the main Kanwar Yatra, the influx of devotees has not slowed down.
The premises are visibly overcrowded, with people setting up camps wherever they can find space. The intense humidity and heat are adding to the devotees' woes. Adequate arrangements have not been made for the pilgrims.
There's a queue of nearly one kilometer outside the community kitchen for food, and the entire area is filled with Kanwar-bearing devotees.

DDA again plans demolition drive at Majnu Ka Tilla
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is working on a plan to undertake a demolition drive at Majnu Ka Tilla on the Yamuna floodplains, home to hundreds of Pakistani Hindu refugees. This was after a similar drive – slated for July 15 and 16 – was deferred due to the police citing inability to depute personnel as the Kanwar Yatra was in progress. In a status report submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Wednesday, the DDA said the demolition drive is being planned again. 'The concerned officials and competent authority are in the process of re-planning and rescheduling the demolition programme, in coordination with Delhi Police and/or any other stakeholders, so as to ensure compliance with the orders of this hon'ble Tribunal and to facilitate ecological restoration of the Yamuna floodplains,' the report noted. The drive was delayed after the Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) wrote to the DDA on July 14 stating that due to the ongoing Kanwar Yatra, 'adequate police protection for the demolition drive could not be provided on the scheduled dates'. The letter recommended a joint survey and a meeting with stakeholders to assess the situation before proceeding with the drive. After the conclusion of the Kanwar Yatra on July 23, the DDA had asked the police to propose a suitable date and time for a joint site inspection. '…the DDA proposes to organise a joint site inspection… to assess the ground situation and plan the demolition operation in a structured, coordinated, and secure manner,' it wrote. The demolition drive comes on the heels of multiple court orders directing the removal of encroachments from the Yamuna floodplains. On May 30, the Delhi High Court had dismissed a plea seeking protection for the refugee camp. It had ruled that the Pakistani Hindu refugees living there 'have no legal right to continue to occupy the area in question – the Yamuna floodplains at Majnu Ka Tilla'. It had added that safeguarding the floodplains was essential, 'not only from an environmental standpoint but also in compliance with the categorical and consistent directions of the Supreme Court, the NGT, as well as the hon'ble High Court.' Following this, the DDA had issued a public notice on July 14 asking residents to vacate the area the same day, warning that 'they will be self-responsible for any loss due to demolition drive' scheduled for July 15 and 16. In a recent order, the HC had observed, 'Even Indian citizens cannot claim alternate allotment as an absolute right, particularly in cases where the land they occupy falls under specially prohibited areas like Zone 'O' of Delhi.' Zone O primarily refers to the floodplain of the Yamuna.

Addressing a public gathering on the occasion, the Chief Minister launched a sharp critique of the opposition's politics of appeasement. He said that certain anti-social elements had conspired to tarnish the image of the Kanwar Yatra, but their attempts failed in the face of public awareness and proactive administrative efforts. Today, the Yatra stands as a symbol of social unity. Highlighting Bareilly's transformation, the Chief Minister said that lakhs of devotees now participate in Jalabhishek at the Nath Corridor, which is emerging as the new identity of the city. During the program, CM Yogi also handed over appointment letters to over 6,000 youth selected through the Rozgaar Mela, and distributed certificates and tablets to beneficiaries of various welfare schemes. Referring to the Kanwar Yatra, he added, "Some individuals had tried to insult public sentiments and defame the tradition, but the alertness of society and the state's strong law-and-order machinery foiled such efforts." 'The double-engine BJP government is committed to blending heritage with development. Lucknow: Terming Kanwar yatra as a "symbol of unity", Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said that some anti-social elements are trying to tarnish its image.
