2025 WKU Football Predictions: Hilltoppers Ranked 83rd in RJ Young's Ultimate 136

College Football 2025 WKU Football Predictions: Hilltoppers Ranked 83rd in RJ Young's Ultimate 136 Published Aug. 10, 2025 9:44 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link This isn't your average college football ranking. My Ultimate 136 is a set of rankings that is fluid, but it's my job to look ahead and make a claim for all FBS teams based on what I know and why I know it. Here are the three pressing questions I started by asking when putting together this list: Who do I think is good? Why do I think they're good? What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations? Here is a look at where Western Kentucky lands in my Ultimate 136. Western Kentucky ranking: 83 Last year's ranking: 59 Top player: WR Matthew Henry: Recorded 1,211 receiving yards at Western Illinois last season, leading the Big South-OVC; had five games last season with 100+ yards receiving. [ Western Kentucky's 2025 schedule ] RJ's take: Tyson Helton continues to pick the best of the rest at offensive coordinator and quarterback and put an offense on the field that's built on a gunslinging attitude. ADVERTISEMENT This year, that means former Abilene Christian OC and QB Rick Bowie and Maverick McIvor will lead the Hilltoppers. McIvor threw for 506 yards last year against Texas Tech and turns 25 during Week 0 when WKU begins the 2025 season against Sam Houston. [ Check out RJ Young's Ultimate 136 College Football Rankings here ] Western Kentucky Win Total Odds: Over 7.5 (-110) Under (-110) Have an issue with my rankings? Ball State ranking: 134 Last year's ranking: 127 Top player: RB Qua Ashley: All-CUSA kick returner last season and honorable mention at running back; had 1,193 all-purpose yards last season. [Ball State's 2025 schedule] RJ's take: First-year head coach Mike Uremovich has one of the toughest gigs in FBS, but let's not talk about the Ball State job as if it's coaching Mumford High School. Uremovich has got real playmakers in quarterback Kiael Kelly, a brilliant athlete, Ashley, who could catch 30 balls out of the backfield and tackles Adam Dolan and Chris Hood, who stand at 6-foot-8 and 6-foot-10, respectively. ADVERTISEMENT Ball State still might not be very good, but it won't be because the potential to win six games isn't on the roster. 49ers sign veteran running back after one went down with an injury

The San Francisco 49ers entered their Saturday night battle with the Denver Broncos down a few running backs, with Christian McCaffrey sitting out as a precaution and both Isaac Guerendo and Jordan James dealing with injuries. Then, during the game, the 49ers lost running back Ameer Abdullah due to a rib injury on a carry up the middle that also resulted in a lost fumble. While it's unclear how long any of the three will be inactive, the 49ers decided it was best to bring in another running back on Sunday, signing old friend Jeff Wilson Jr., according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Wilson, 29, played collegiately at North Texas from 2014-17, earning All-CUSA honors in his final season with the Mean Green before the San Francisco 49ers signed him as an undrafted free agent following the 2018 NFL draft. He spent 2018-22 in San Francisco, rushing for 1,733 yards and 15 touchdowns on 4.4 yards per attempt and catching 45 passes for an additional 387 yards and four touchdowns in 45 games. Midway through the 2022 season, the 49ers traded Wilson to the Miami Dolphins, reuniting him with head coach Mike McDaniel. From 2022-24, Wilson rushed for 637 yards and three touchdowns on 4.5 yards per attempt and caught 29 passes for 198 yards and one score. Wilson's familiarity with the system should make him an easy plug-and-play option right away in San Francisco, and he honestly could even fight to make the roster despite having just a few weeks to prove his case.
