Human trafficking on the rise as online scam hubs go global
Human trafficking-fueled scam centers have significantly expanded their operations worldwide, according to a crime trend update released on Monday by the international police agency Interpol.
Hubs where trafficking victims are forced to take part in online fraud first emerged in a few Southeast Asian nations, but investigators are now also uncovering similar fraud centers in other regions.
Where are scam centers spreading?
According to the international police organization, victims now come from 66 countries across all continents, highlighting what Interpol describes as a "
global crisis
" involving hundreds of thousands of people.
Scam centers are now increasingly found in other regions, including the Middle East, West Africa, fast emerging as a new regional hub, and Central America.
Victims are often lured with fake job offers and then held captive in scam compounds. Many are blackmailed over alleged debts, beaten, sexually exploited, and in some cases tortured or raped.
Inside these centers, they are forced to run online scams, mostly targeting people abroad to steal money.
A 2024 Interpol-led operation exposed dozens of cases where victims were coerced into committing fraud, including a raid on an industrial-scale scam centre in the Philippines.

That same year, police dismantled a centre in Namibia where 88 youths were forced to scam others.
Emerging technologies are fuelling this trend further. The crime update notes a surge in the use of artificial intelligence, from generating fake job ads to creating deepfake profiles for "sextortion" and romance scams.
Who are the victims?
Interpol says the pool of those preyed upon has widened significantly.
While early
human trafficking
victims were mainly Chinese-speaking and came from China, Malaysia, Thailand or Singapore, people are now being trafficked to such hubs from South America, East Africa and Western Europe.
"Tackling this rapidly globalizing threat requires a coordinated international response," said said Interpol's acting head of police services Cyril Gout.
Who are the people traffickers?
The report found that about 90 per cent of human trafficking facilitators came from Asia, while 11% were from South America or Africa.
About 80 per cent of these facilitators were men, with 61 per cent aged between 20 and 39.
Online scam centers were initially concentrated in Cambodia, with additional trafficking hubs later uncovered in Laos and Myanmar.
Today, similar operations have been identified in at least four more Asian countries, and evidence shows the model is spreading to other regions such as West Africa, where cyber-enabled financial crime is already common.
In its findings, Interpol warned that the spread of such criminal networks needs urgent, coordinated action to disrupt trafficking routes and support victims.
Interpol said that these criminal hubs are increasingly intertwined with other major transnational crimes, demanding a globally coordinated response.
Trafficking routes used for scam centers are being exploited for smuggling drugs, firearms, and endangered wildlife like tigers and pangolins, Interpol said.

Hefty loans sanctioned on inflated property valuation in Andaman Co-op Bank scam: Police
Investigation into the Andaman and Nicobar State Cooperative Bank Ltd (ANSCBL) loan irregularities case involving Congress leader and former MP Kuldeep Rai Sharma has revealed that hefty loans in crores "were sanctioned with insufficient security coverage", a senior police officer said. The ANSCBL policy mandates that at least 150 per cent of the loan amount must be secured through collateral. However, it was found that in many cases, hefty loans were sanctioned with insufficient security coverage, exposing the bank to higher financial risk, the officer said. Probe revealed several instances of manipulation in property valuation certificates, and in a few cases, the role of Tehsildar is also under scanner, he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Remember Him? Sit Down Before You See What He Looks Like Now 33 Bridges "As per the bank policy, the lower valuation between the Tehsildar's report and that of the private assessor when sanctioning loans should be considered. But in many cases, forged higher valuation was considered while disbursing loans. This resulted in serious breach of policy and exposing the bank to a high-risk default," the senior officer said. He further said, "It was also found that several original documents, including title deeds and mortgage agreements, were found missing from loan files, raising concerns about document handling and security protocols within the bank". Live Events As per the Enforcement Directorate, more than Rs 500 crore was fraudulently obtained through more than 100 loan accounts from the bank. On July 30, a team of ED officers from Kolkata arrived in Port Blair and on July 31, they visited the ANSCBL office at Maulana Azad Road and Sharma's house at Junglighat in Port Blair and examined various people. They seized important data related to bank loan irregularity cases, an official said. Sharma was the Congress Andaman MP from 2019 to 2024. They also searched houses and offices of a few Port Blair traders/businessmen and former employees of ANSCBL, including ANSCBL managing director K Murugan. On May 15, an FIR was lodged against Sharma in connection with loan irregularities in ANSCBL. Apart from Sharma, others named in the FIR include the cooperative bank's former chairman, board members and directors/officials of the bank and several beneficiaries. On July 18, the CID arrested the former MP in connection with the ANSCBL loan irregularities case. Sharma, who formerly served as the chairman of ANSCBL, was arrested from a private hospital in Port Blair where he was admitted due to health issues. Police had received a complaint from the deputy registrar of the cooperative societies (HQs), which alleged gross irregularities in sanctioning loans to various people by the lender. Since June 25, eight people have been arrested in connection with the scam, including ANSCBL managing director K Murugan, bank employee Kalaivanan, and six others. PTI

US-led coalition captures senior Islamic State member in Syria
Agency: Beirut, Aug 20 (AP) A US-led coalition captured a senior member of the Islamic State group in northwest Syria on Wednesday, state media and a war monitor reported. It was not immediately clear if the man is the IS supreme leader. The US military did not respond to a request for comment by The Associated Press. The operation that included landing troops from helicopters occurred before dawn in Atmeh town near the Turkish border, and an IS commander known as Abu Hafs al-Qurayshi, an Iraqi citizen, was taken away while another Iraqi citizen was killed, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Observatory said the man captured had a French-speaking woman with him, and it was not immediately clear if she was taken by the US force or by Syrian security forces, who later cordoned the area. Two years ago, IS announced that a man called Abu Hafs al-Hashemi al-Qurayshi was named as its new leader after Turkish authorities killed his predecessor. Syrian state TV on Wednesday quoted an unnamed security official as saying the Iraqi man targeted in the operation is known as Ali, adding that his real name is Salah Noman. It said Noman was living in an apartment with his wife, son and mother. It said he was killed in the raid. There was no immediate clarification for the difference in names reported by state media and the war monitor. IS broke away from al-Qaida more than a decade ago and attracted supporters from around the world after it declared a so-called caliphate in 2014 in large parts of Syria and Iraq. Despite its defeat in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria two years later, IS militants still carry out deadly attacks in both countries and elsewhere. Al-Qurayshi is not the real name of IS leaders but comes from Quraish, the name of the tribe to which Islam's Prophet Muhammad belonged. IS claims its leaders hail from the tribe, and 'al-Qurayshi" is part of their nom de guerre.
