Alden Richards reveals 2024 was his ‘lowest year,' says he hit ‘rock bottom'

GMA Network22-05-2025

Alden Richards opened up for the first time about how hard 2024 was for him and how he greatly struggled.
In his GMA Integrated News interview with Nelson Canlas, which aired in '24 Oras' Thursday, the Sparkle star described how difficult last year was for him.
'I think last year was my lowest year. Rock bottom. It took me six months to get over that. That was—hindi naman siya clinically diagnosed, but that was depression at its finest. That was depression,' Alden said.
He said that it was largely unknown to others, as he found it hard to discuss because he did not want to show weakness.
Alden also reflected on his tendency to be overgenerous to others.
'Inuuna ko muna lahat ng tao bago sarili ko. But last year, medyo—I think that was my breaking point kasi minsan 'di ba tayo, we always go out of our way to help other people. Tulong, tulong, tulong. Bigay, bigay, bigay. Ang nangyari sa akin, paglingon ko don sa timba ko, wala na palang natira sa akin. And then that broke me to a million pieces,' he said.
During this period, Alden described being 'clouded with a lot of negative thoughts.'
He mentioned that he found it hard to process his emotions and thoughts correctly even though he knew he had people around him who loved him.
'It's very hard to be present na kahit nandito ka, wala ka dito,' he said.
When asked about his love life, Alden expressed his confusion regarding the mindset that a person's happiness is based on their love life.
'It's just this is my story, and this is how I want my story to be told [and] not based on the presumption of other people. I'm so done with that. I've been here long enough. I know I've done so much for the industry, and I would like to do more for the industry right now,' he said.
Alden was recently named 2024 Box Office King by the Cinema Exhibitors Association of the Philippines (CEAP) for 'Hello, Love, Again,' with Kathryn Bernardo as the Box Office Queen.
Alden is set to host GMA's upcoming dance competition 'Stars on the Floor,' where he will also perform during a dance production.

Shuvee Etrata chose Klarisse De Guzman and Dustin Yu picked Bianca De Vera as their final duos in "Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition." In the episode on Friday, Shuvee explained she chose Klarisse because she's among the people who bring joy in Bahay ni Kuya. Philippine culture, artworks take centerstage at Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan

Philippine culture and artworks took centerstage at the Philippine Pavilion at the Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. According to Katrina Son's report in "24 Oras" Friday, among the artworks that were featured include handwoven pieces with multimedia projections that seemingly transport viewers to the different regions of the Philippines. "These are all made of abaca, so the artists weaved abaca to be the canvas for the art piece and then we printed our art piece on it," Philippine Pavilion creative director Chochay Garcia said of a woven artwork. "And then as you can see, there are strips here. They've been cut into strips and then reweaved together, inserting different materials that are endemic to the Philippines," she added. Many attendees admired the handwoven pieces at the Philippine Pavilion, including OPM icon Jose Mari Chan and European Union Ambassador to the Philippines Massimo Santoro. "We've been showing our Japanese friends the island where we were born in Iloilo. Today, this is the first pavilion that we came to, I wanted our Japanese guests to appreciate our pavilion, " said Jose Mari Chan. Meanwhile, Filipino Romer Arguelles, who visited the pavilion with his family from Dubai, was recognized as the 300,000th visitor. "Very surprising. Nakakataba ng puso na nagkaroon pa ng ganito na pang 300,000. Dapat kung bibisita ka lang din sa expo, dito ka dapat una pumunta. Be proud of your country," said Romer. Attendees also took part in the Philippine cultural dances performed at the expo, while others tried traditional hilot massage. Philippine cuisine also shone at the pavilion through Hain, where halo-halo, adobo, and okoy were served to the attendees. According to the report, cultural performances will be held at the Philippine Pavilion on Saturday, June 7, for Philippine National Day. —CDC, GMA Integrated News
