Every year, on Mother's Day, I highlight a business founded by a mother and daughter. This year is particularly special, as it coincides with AAPI Month. I had the privilege of sitting with Susanna Chow and her mother, Sai Chow, the dynamic duo behind the women-led, family-owned luxury outerwear, dresses, and bridal brand Susanna Chow.
Susanna and Sai launched their business with only $500, just enough to build a website. They didn't have outside investors, fashion industry connections, or inventory. However, they possessed firm conviction, resilience, and a shared belief that fashion should be intentional and well-crafted. 'We started this brand with a simple mission: to create a sustainable luxury label rooted in timeless design and ethical values. Our mantra: Buy once, wear forever.'
Sai immigrated to the U.S. from Hong Kong in 1970 at age 21, speaking little English. Determined to succeed in her new country, she enrolled at Baruch College to study accounting while working in New York City's Chinatown garment factories. Beading and sewing run deep in the Chow family: Sai learned the craft from her mother, who supported their family by beading and sewing garments at home after World War II.
Sai later earned a master's degree from Pace University while working full-time as a manager in Citigroup's margin and derivatives department—and raising three children. A breast cancer survivor and a lifelong learner, she remains, to this day, deeply engaged in craft and community, teaching beadwork and origami at senior centers.
Susanna and Sai's story challenges the traditional norms and celebrates reinvention. Before founding their brand, Susanna worked in global beauty marketing for MAC and NARS. At Estée Lauder, she led digital marketing strategy and collaborated with global e-commerce teams. Susanna knew what an ideal user experience should be like, but had never built a website from scratch. "Knowing what you want is one thing, but executing is a different game," she says. One core lesson from her corporate career stuck with her: "Everyone brings their skills to the table. That's how you build a great team." Susanna embraced Estée Lauder's strength-based leadership philosophy and continues to apply it today.
Since their very first days, everything has been made-to-order or produced in small, sustainable batches. "We didn't want to just focus on what we were making, but how we were making it," says Susanna. Their commitment to craftsmanship extends to eco-conscious packaging and minimizing waste in every step of the production process.
The original spark for the brand came when Susanna visited her mother's apartment—now their studio—and saw a table full of beaded tissue boxes and dolls. Her marketing instincts said, 'We can make handbags out of this.' In 2018, the two began creating handmade prototypes. Their first significant retail order came from Tribeca Boutique Ever After. As the business began to grow, Susanna left her corporate career to build her namesake brand alongside her mother.

While the handbags gave them their start, a coat named JoJo, after Susanna's sister Joanna, changed everything. Joanna couldn't find a stylish maternity coat during the pandemic, so Susanna and Sai designed one. It became their bestseller, and the brand's pivot into outerwear took off. The outerwear pieces quickly went viral on Instagram. Celebrities like Ariana Grande and Nicky Hilton were spotted in their coats. Soon, the Chows expanded into full outerwear production and are now stocked in over 30 stores globally, including Revolve and Bloomingdale's. Their feather-trimmed Dorothy coat remains a standout.

This spring, they launched their first bridal capsule collection. Designed and handmade in New York City, the collection honors generations of craftsmanship—her mother stitched Sai's wedding dress. Susanna carries that tradition forward with heirloom-quality gowns meant to last a lifetime. Bridal dresses range from $695 to $895, and coats from $595 to $1,695. Each piece is crafted with care, minimal waste, and zero overproduction.

Sai, now 71, remains the creative force behind the brand. She describes herself as a maximalist who designs intuitively rather than through sketching. She can create a pattern simply by visualizing the design. Susanna leads brand marketing, e-commerce, and styling. While their aesthetics sometimes differ, the creative tension results in some of their best work. "When we compromise, we create our most beautiful pieces," Susanna explains.
Their deep ties to New York's Chinatown remain foundational. It's where Sai once worked in a garment factory while studying at Baruch and where the brand's studio operates today. Supporting the local community is central to their mission.
Their story is more than just building a fashion business—it's about resilience, identity, and the power of family and legacy. "It's okay to feel scared when you try something new," Susanna says. "Let's normalize this fear, overcome it, and embrace it. Just push forward anyway."
Much of that mindset, she adds, came from watching her mother overcome breast cancer and the sudden loss of her parents in a motor vehicle crash. "When faced with unimaginable life circumstances, it puts things into perspective. What do you have to lose? Or another way to think about it is—'Oh, but what if you fly?'"
"She always says she's proud of me," Susanna reflects, 'but the reality is—I'm so proud of her. And the best part is, we're just getting started.'
Sai's advice? "Keep going. Keep learning."

"The last one she wrote was on October 7th. The poems she wrote over the years were published in poetry books." 'We welcome the closure that we have been granted and the return for burial of our loved ones, who went out for a walk on that Black Sabbath morning and never came back," the Weinstein Haggai family said Thursday. Nir Oz thanked the IDF and security forces who carried out the complex rescue operation. They also thanked "everyone who supported, struggled, prayed, and fought for us and for all of Israel," as well as the FBI, and the US and Israeli governments. "However, our hearts will not be whole until all 12 hostages from Nir Oz and all 56 hostages in total are brought back," the statement concluded. Judy and Gadi were the "power couple of Kibbutz Nir Oz." Judy was volunteering on the kibbutz when she heard Gadi playing the flute and fell in love, the kibbutz said. "They complete each other: he's a goofball, just like a little kid, always dancing and laughing, while Judy is an English teacher, taking care of children, and sharing meditation and mindfulness techniques," the kibbutz said. Haggai and his wife had been out walking early on October 7 when Hamas terrorists attacked them according to the Hostage Family Forum. Their daughter, Iris, heard in a phone call that they were hiding and that her father was injured and later lost contact with them. The terrorists kidnapped both of them and took them to Gaza.

Airbnb owners are set to face a triple whammy of taxes as the Government increasingly treats them as 'walking ATMs,' a senior Tory MP has warned. Kevin Hollinrake, the shadow housing minister, criticised ministers for hitting short-term let owners with little-known licensing fees when they are already paying double council tax. From April 1, all English councils were given the powers to charge a 100pc council tax premium on second home owners. More than 230 chose to implement the charge – which The Telegraph is campaigning to be cut or abolished. But the new legislation included scope for the Government to introduce a registration scheme to regulate holiday lets and ensure they are recorded with councils. This is expected to involve a licensing charge, which experts estimated would be around £100 per year. Labour has failed to provide a timeframe for when this will be introduced. The result could be that short-term let owners are saddled with paying double council tax bills, plus an annual licensing fee. Mr Hollinrake has argued that the double council tax bill should cover the cost of an owner registering a short-term let. In a written parliamentary question, he asked the Government whether it 'will ensure that homes subject to a second homes council tax premium by local authorities are not charged additional registration fees'. But Chris Bryant, the culture minister, refused to confirm the exemption in his response. He added that the 'scope of the scheme is still being determined'. A loophole in the business rates system means some households could avoid the double tax altogether. Mr Hollinrake told The Telegraph: 'Labour's thirst for tax cannot be quenched, and people may now be hit by a triple whammy of council charges – two lots of council tax, and a licensing fee on top if they ever want to rent it out. 'Such licensing charges are especially pointless, as councils already know the property is being used as a second home by virtue of the council tax surcharge. 'Local taxpayers deserve better than being treated like walking ATMs by this punishing Labour government.' Andy Fenner, head of the Short Term Accommodation Association (STAA), said: 'This appears to be purely a revenue-generating exercise rather than a genuine policy need. Short-term rental tourism provides vital investment and supports thousands of jobs and businesses throughout our communities. Alistair Handyside, of the Professional Association of Self-Caterers UK, said it was supportive of the scheme but concerned about 'the amount of other interventions such as the council tax premiums, the abolition of the furnished holiday lets tax regime and the new EPC standards, these are closing businesses at a very fast rate'. The second home council tax premium was originally brought in by the Tories. However, Labour has come under criticism for refusing to monitor the impact of the policy on housing, tourism and local economies. Ministers said it was up to individual councils to decide if the double tax is 'effective'. But The Telegraph revealed earlier this month that eight in 10 local authorities who charge the premium failed to carry out impact assessments before introducing it. If a property is let out for 70 nights a year, it qualifies for business rates and is therefore exempt from council tax. Many second home owners will qualify for small business rates relief, which offers up to 100pc relief, if the property is the only one they let. This loophole will cost local authorities £334m this year in missed revenue, a figure which politicians said proved the premium was backfiring. If a property is not let for 70 days, however, it will still be on the hook for all three charges. A government spokesman said: 'A registration scheme will help local authorities across England identify the short-term lets in their area so they can address any community impacts. Jun. 4—EPHRATA — Hannah Keen, a senior at Ephrata High School, has been recognized as one of the June Students of the Month for her exceptional growth, dedication and positivity both in and outside the classroom, according to Marla Allsopp, the teacher who nominated her. Allsopp, an English teacher, has had the privilege of teaching Keen in her College English 101 and 102 classes and the award highlights Keen's journey from a struggling student to a passionate learner and leader. Having known Keen since her sophomore year, Allsopp has witnessed firsthand the significant transformation in Keen's academic and personal life. "Her growth and how she has come out of her shell, and how she has really discovered who she is, has been really inspiring to me," Allsopp said. The recognition of Keen as Student of the Month is not merely an acknowledgment of her academic achievements but a celebration of her character and willingness to support others, Allsopp said. Allsopp emphasized Keen's inclusive spirit, pointing out her ability to connect with her peers regardless of their backgrounds or beliefs. "She really is accepting and wants to listen to you and knows that she has something to learn from you," Allsopp said. This quality not only fosters a positive environment but also encourages open dialogue among classmates, leading to more engaging discussions in the classroom, Allsop explained. Keen has consistently demonstrated leadership in academic settings, particularly during class discussions, according to her teacher. "She leads the discussion, asking people questions and digging into why they think the way they think," Allsopp said. Allsopp elaborated, saying Keen's conversational skills not only promote participation but also allow her to respectfully disagree with others, when necessary, a vital leadership trait that encourages critical thinking. "I absolutely hear what you're saying, but this is the way that I saw that," Keen said, reflecting on her approach to discourse. In her college English classes, Keen exceeded expectations through her detailed and research-driven work. "She will come in several times during the days as she's preparing to ask me questions and tell me about other research articles that she's looked up," Allsopp said. Keen's curiosity and proactive nature make her not only a student who seeks knowledge but also one who shares it, Allsopp said, helping her classmates understand complex materials in the process. Beyond academics, Keen has shown a commitment to extracurricular activities. She has been involved in the Hope Squad, an organization focused on mental health awareness, for three years and played a vital role in coordinating activities that promote peer support. Allsopp praised her dedication. "She showed up every single day and made sure things were happening, made sure things were going on," her teacher said. Allsopp said this commitment has encouraged other students to engage in the initiative, highlighting Keen's ability to make a difference within her school community. When asked about her passions, Keen shared that reading is one of her favorite pastimes. "You can live a thousand different lives and learn so much from reading," Keen said. Her love of literature has significantly shaped her educational experience, especially this year, as her English teacher introduced her to new writers and ideas. "It was so nice to escape from the hectic chaos of senior year," she said. Keen also encourages her peers through her own journey. Reflecting on her past struggles, she provided advice to younger students. "Life probably sucks right now, but it will not suck forever. All you can do is keep moving forward," Keen said. She said this perspective has not only been a guiding light in her life but also serves as encouragement for those who may face similar challenges. As she prepares to graduate, Keen plans to attend South Puget Sound Community College to pursue a paralegal degree while balancing work. Her aspirations reflect her diligence and commitment to personal development. "I just want to see where life takes me," she said. Allsopp said Keen's nomination as Student of the Month encapsulates her remarkable journey of resilience, leadership and friendship. Along with her ability to uplift her peers while wholeheartedly engaging in her studies, she sets an inspiring example for students at Ephrata High School. "She is truly one of the best that Ephrata High School has to offer," Allsopp said.
