BJP suspends VMC corporator Ashish Joshi, days after mothers of Harni boat tragedy victims questioned CM at Vadodara event

Indian Express09-05-2025

The Bharatiya Janata Party Thursday suspended Ashish Joshi, a Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) corporator from Ward 15, from the party for 'damaging image of the party'. Joshi's suspension came after the mothers of two students killed in the Harni boat capsize were allegedly detained by the Vadodara police for interrupting Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel during his speech at an event in the city on May 2.
Joshi has been supporting the victims of the Harni boat tragedy by raising the issue on the floor of VMC since the day of the accident on January 18, 2024. He is the corporator of the VMC ward where the New Sunrise School is located, and from where most of the deceased studied.
On Thursday, in a letter to Joshi, the BJP said it had taken the step to suspend him, considering the 'repeated reminders to mend ways' had gone unheeded. The suspension letter, signed by BJP Vadodara unit chief Jayprakash Soni, states, 'Time and again, you have been reminded to maintain discipline in writing as well as through verbal communication… On several occasions, your behaviour and conduct have damaged the image of the party. You were also served a show-cause notice in this regard, but no improvement has been seen in your conduct.'
'It has come to our notice that you have joined in damaging the image of the party in several instances… The same has been proven adequately by way of social media posts as well as newspaper reports… Considering these factors, as per the directions of the State party President, you are suspended from the party's active and primary membership.'
The suspension comes two days after Joshi said in an interview on a social media channel regarding the two mothers questioning CM Patel, and spoke about justice being denied to the families due to the delay in adding officials of VMC as accused in the case.
In March this year, days after Soni was appointed as the city unit president, the BJP issued a show cause notice to Joshi to 'explain repeated indiscipline', just two days after Joshi got into a bitter argument with the then municipal commissioner Dilip Rana in the General Board meeting of the civic body over the cleaning of stormwater drains in his ward. In February, Joshi left the BJP embarrassed during the annual budget sessions when he 'voted against' the party's whip on a question related to the compensation for victims of the Harni boat tragedy.
Based on a proposal before the Congress party as part of its budget recommendations, VMC held a vote to decide whether the civic body should award the families of 14 victims of the Harni tragedy a compensation of Rs 25 lakh. While all other BJP corporators voted against the suggestion, Joshi, along with seven Congress corporators, voted in favour.
Joshi has been supporting the families of the 14 victims, including 12 students and two school teachers who were killed in the boat capsize. He has been demanding exemplary compensation from VMC for the victims of the Harni boat tragedy, and also forged a bond Raksha Bandhan last year when the mothers of deceased students Roshni Shinde and Alishba Kothari tied rakhis on his wrist.
Joshi, who is the corporator of the VMC ward where the New Sunrise School is located and from where most of the deceased belong, publicly said following the tragedy he 'felt guilty being part of the system' that could 'not provide a safe picnic spot to the innocent'. A first-time corporator, Joshi said VMC officials, who should have been responsible for checking the fitness certificate of the boats and other safety measures, should be suspended.
Joshi has vowed not to visit the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya until those responsible for the boat capsize are brought to justice.

HP court orders attachment of govt property in over 27-yr-old land compensation case

Shimla, June 12 (UNI) Highlighting prolonged government inaction, the district judge (forest) Ajay Mehta has directed the attachment of key government properties, including the PWD rest house at Tara Devi, two official vehicles from the PWD headquarters, furniture, computers, and heaters, over non-payment of land compensation to farmers for the past 27 years. The case pertains to land acquired in 1998 by the Public Works Department (PWD) Rohru division for the construction of the Baidhar-Thana-Tikkar road. Approximately 15 bighas were acquired, including apple orchards, and the land acquisition officer had initially assessed compensation at Rs. 6,252 per apple plant. Unsatisfied with the award, landowners from Tikka -- Diwan Chand, Bhajan Das, Inder Singh, Narain Chand, Bahadur Singh, Nihal Chand, Jagdish, Mohan Chand, Jai Krishan, and Rameshwar -- moved court in 2012. In 2017, the additional district and sessions judge ordered an enhanced compensation of Rs 26,575 per plant. However, the state failed to implement the order or deposit Rs 2.5 crore compensation, prompting the petitioners to file an execution petition in 2020. The court noted that despite three prior orders to attach government property, no action was taken to disburse the compensation. It further observed that both the secretary (PWD secretariat) and the Land Acquisition Officer (Winter Field, Shimla) failed to cooperate with court proceedings. While the state government has now sought an additional four months to deposit the dues, the next hearing has been scheduled for June 18. The court has made it clear that the attachment orders will remain in force until then. In a related matter, a single bench of Justice Ajay Mohan Goel of the Himachal Pradesh High Court recently ordered the attachment of Himachal Bhavan and 18 properties of HPTDC over unpaid arbitration awards and pending dues of retired employees, reflecting a broader trend of judicial strictness over financial defaults by the state. Does Trump's $5 million gold card guarantee American citizenship? Here's what US President says

US President Donald Trump launched a waitlist website for the latest visa programme, Trump Card, a ticket to permanent residency in the United States for foreigners who wish to make an investment of $5 million. Notably, this hefty $5 million investment will not guarantee citizenship in the US. While speaking to reporters in February, Trump clarified that he does not need approval from Congress to issue a gold card since it will not guarantee citizenship; nevertheless, it is a 'strong path for citizenship'. However, Trump did not provide details regarding how the gold card will be a path to citizenship. In order to guarantee citizenship in the US, Trump explained that he would need the approval of Congress. One of the common ways to secure US citizenship currently is through naturalisation, which requires being a lawful permanent resident for at least five years. The applicant must be at least 18 years old, able to read, write and speak basic English according to their age group, and be of 'good moral character'. On Thursday, Trump announced the launch of the waitlist website for Trump Card. The website features a gold card with an image of Donald Trump with the name 'The Trump Card'. In his official Truth Social handle, he wrote, 'FOR FIVE MILLION $DOLLARS, THE TRUMP CARD IS COMING! Thousands have been calling and asking how they can sign up to ride a beautiful road in gaining access to the Greatest Country and Market anywhere in the World. It's called THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! THE WAITING LIST IS NOW OPEN. To sign up, go to While describing the benefits of the gold card, Trump said, 'We're going to be putting a price on that card of about $5 million, and that's going to give you green card privileges, plus it's going to be a route to citizenship.' He further added, 'Wealthy people will be coming into our country by buying this card,' Trump said in February. 'They'll be wealthy, and they'll be successful, and they'll be spending a lot of money, and paying a lot of taxes and employing a lot of people.' The US President previously announced that he wishes to replace the EB-5 immigrant investor visa programme, which provides green cards for foreigners who promise to invest in US businesses. Administered by USCIS, the EB-5 programme was launched in the 1990s with the aim of boosting 'the US economy through job creation and capital investment by foreign investors.' Trump highlighted a similar goal with the gold card.
