BJP suspends VMC corporator Ashish Joshi, days after mothers of Harni boat tragedy victims questioned CM at Vadodara event
Joshi has been supporting the victims of the Harni boat tragedy by raising the issue on the floor of VMC since the day of the accident on January 18, 2024. He is the corporator of the VMC ward where the New Sunrise School is located, and from where most of the deceased studied.
On Thursday, in a letter to Joshi, the BJP said it had taken the step to suspend him, considering the 'repeated reminders to mend ways' had gone unheeded. The suspension letter, signed by BJP Vadodara unit chief Jayprakash Soni, states, 'Time and again, you have been reminded to maintain discipline in writing as well as through verbal communication… On several occasions, your behaviour and conduct have damaged the image of the party. You were also served a show-cause notice in this regard, but no improvement has been seen in your conduct.'
'It has come to our notice that you have joined in damaging the image of the party in several instances… The same has been proven adequately by way of social media posts as well as newspaper reports… Considering these factors, as per the directions of the State party President, you are suspended from the party's active and primary membership.'
The suspension comes two days after Joshi said in an interview on a social media channel regarding the two mothers questioning CM Patel, and spoke about justice being denied to the families due to the delay in adding officials of VMC as accused in the case.
In March this year, days after Soni was appointed as the city unit president, the BJP issued a show cause notice to Joshi to 'explain repeated indiscipline', just two days after Joshi got into a bitter argument with the then municipal commissioner Dilip Rana in the General Board meeting of the civic body over the cleaning of stormwater drains in his ward. In February, Joshi left the BJP embarrassed during the annual budget sessions when he 'voted against' the party's whip on a question related to the compensation for victims of the Harni boat tragedy.
Based on a proposal before the Congress party as part of its budget recommendations, VMC held a vote to decide whether the civic body should award the families of 14 victims of the Harni tragedy a compensation of Rs 25 lakh. While all other BJP corporators voted against the suggestion, Joshi, along with seven Congress corporators, voted in favour.
Joshi has been supporting the families of the 14 victims, including 12 students and two school teachers who were killed in the boat capsize. He has been demanding exemplary compensation from VMC for the victims of the Harni boat tragedy, and also forged a bond Raksha Bandhan last year when the mothers of deceased students Roshni Shinde and Alishba Kothari tied rakhis on his wrist.
Joshi, who is the corporator of the VMC ward where the New Sunrise School is located and from where most of the deceased belong, publicly said following the tragedy he 'felt guilty being part of the system' that could 'not provide a safe picnic spot to the innocent'. A first-time corporator, Joshi said VMC officials, who should have been responsible for checking the fitness certificate of the boats and other safety measures, should be suspended.
Joshi has vowed not to visit the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya until those responsible for the boat capsize are brought to justice.

SP produces affidavits of 2022; accuses CEC of 'lying brazenly'
NEW DELHI: Samajwadi Party Monday accused the CEC of "lying brazenly" that the party had not given any affidavit on the deletion of voters in Uttar Pradesh, even as Akhilesh Yadav alleged targeted deletion of backward and most backward class voters, who back SP, at the behest of the governing party. As the row over voter deletion deepened Monday, SP affidavits became the opposition's propaganda weapon with INDIA bloc MPs holding them up during the protest against SIR of electoral rolls in Bihar and Election Commission at the Parliament entrance ahead of proceedings in the morning. SP leader Ramgopal Yadav said EC was "lying" about the affidavits, saying they were filed for 2022 state polls, while complaints were submitted about UP bypolls, including in Mainpuri. Akhilesh distributed copies of the affidavits around in Parliament complex, asserting that 18,000 complaints on stamp papers were submitted to EC in a rush after he received an EC notice asking that he support his claims about voter deletion in the 2022 state elections. Seeking to turn the row into a political weapon, Akhilesh alleged that voters from most backward groups like Maurya, Pal, Baghel and Rathore were being removed from rolls to help BJP. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Passive Income Ideas Sitting at Home Mone Click Here Undo "They remove their names while promoting the narrative that OBCs are voting for them (BJP)," he said, adding that deletions played a role in SP's defeat in many narrowly decided seats. "This is what we could identify in a short time. If we receive the voter lists in the format we are asking for, we can provide more such cases. Votes cast in 2019 were deleted by 2022. There is also a proper procedure for creating a voter ID but that is being ignored," he alleged. At the same time, SP leaders alleged that SDM officers who conduct the elections are deliberately picked from "the community of the chief minister" while those seen as belonging to communities that support SP are changed. The Samajwadi chief said EC has not taken any action on its complaints filed since 2019 spanning across polls in 2022 and 2024, and not a single officer has been punished despite the petitions after BJP came to power. "It means EC listens more to BJP," he charged.

Angry at Rahul, Modi blocking BC quota bills: CM
Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy Monday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was blocking approval of the two BC reservation bills and an ordinance to remove the 50% cap on reservations because of his anger at Rahul Gandhi 's fight for education, employment, and political empowerment of Backward Classes. "If PM Modi and Union minister G Kishan Reddy have anything against Rahul Gandhi's stand for justice to the BCs, let them book more cases against him individually. Already, there are several cases pending. But they should stop blocking the BC quota bills. Modi and Kishan Reddy should take up the issue with the President and ensure assent for the two bills passed by the Telangana assembly and the ordinance. The BJP has the power to do it," Revanth said. He was speaking at the 375th birth anniversary celebrations of Sardar Sarvai Papanna Goud Maharaj at Ravindra Bharati here. Revanth hit out at both the BJP and BRS for 'undermining' BC rights. While the BJP, he said, was using Muslim reservations as a pretext to block higher BC quota, the previous BRS govt led by K Chandrasekhar Rao restricted reservations to 50% in the Panchayat Raj Act of 2018. These were forwarded by the governor to the President. "When we realised assent was being delayed, we held a massive dharna at Jantar Mantar. Leaders and MPs from Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and other states joined us. But neither BJP nor BRS leaders participated. That dharna was not for Congress' political gain but for the empowerment of bahujans. Their absence exposed both parties as 'anti-BC'," he said. Rejecting BJP's argument on Muslim quota, Revanth said: "The Constitution does not allow religion-based reservations. If there were any, the Supreme Court would strike them down within minutes. Show us where religion-based reservations exist in our 42% BC quota bills. This is a BJP conspiracy to deny BCs their rights under the guise of opposing Muslim quota." He pointed out that Muslim reservations under the BC category have existed for over 56 years. "If the BJP really opposes them, let them remove them in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh first," he said, urging BC communities to see through "these conspiracies." He said BC empowerment can happen only through education, employment, and political representation and guaranteed reservations. The CM laid the foundation for the installation of a statue of Sardar Sarvai Papanna near the secretariat. Box CM Revanth Reddy and deputy CM Bhatti Vikramarka will join Rahul Gandhi's Bihar padayatra. The CM alleged that BJP was deleting names of lakhs of voters across states. "Vote chori is being done to win elections. In Bihar, 65 lakh names were deleted. It happened in Maharashtra, and it will happen in Telangana. People who are alive are shown as dead, while outsiders are enrolled as voters. Rahul Gandhi exposed this conspiracy, but instead of answers, the ECI asked him for affidavits. Is this justice?" he asked. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Uproar over activist's allegation that Siddaramaiah committed 28 murders
Bengaluru/Mangaluru: The legislative assembly Monday witnessed heated exchanges after it was revealed that activist Mahesh Shetty Thimarodi, who demanded a special investigation team (SIT) to probe alleged mass murders in Dharmasthala, claimed "chief minister Siddaramaiah had committed 28 murders". Home minister G Parameshwara has reportedly directed police to register a suo motu case and arrest Thimarodi. After speaking to senior police officers, he is said to have asked them to move swiftly. "Should we allow someone to go when he has spoken against the CM," he reportedly asked. Officers informed him that the video in which Thimarodi makes the accusation was from May 2023. "Police are verifying the video and if the charges are true, he will be arrested in a day or two," police sources said. R Ashoka, opposition leader, raised the issue in the House, saying: "Does it mean the CM is a murderer? What action will you take against the one who made the allegation? If you remain quiet, what should we understand?" S Suresh Kumar of BJP said: "He has boldly accused the CM. How can the govt tolerate this? Why is the govt silent?" BJP's V Sunil Kumar taunted: "The country's No.1 home minister should act," ridiculing Parameshwara who had proudly claimed last week that ChatGPT shows he is the No 1 home minister in the country. Parameshwara said: "The individual already has several cases against him. I will not name him, but such a person cannot be left free in society. Directions have already been issued to the police to act and that law will take its course." However, the debate continued with Ashoka saying: "The person who alleged hundreds of murders in Dharmasthala has now claimed CM Siddaramaiah carried out 28 murders. This was said openly without fear. Is goonda raj prevailing in the state?" Speaker UT Khader asked Ashoka to file a petition. Deputy CM DK Shivakumar intervened, saying: "The person has also spoken against BJP members. The CM has directed the home minister to take immediate action."
