Free radios available at Oakmont allowing golf fans to keep tabs on play around the course
If you're walking around the Oakmont Country Club golf course this week during the U.S. Open tournament, or watching it on Channel 11, you might catch a glimpse of fans around the course wearing a little blue earphone.
This is actually a radio that is live streaming the play on the course — helping fans keep up with play on different holes than the one they might currently be watching.

If you're coming out Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, head up to the American Express tent — there are a few in the different fan zones of the course.
There you can get the radio — and a reusable water bottle to fill up around the course while you're there.
'It's like eyes on every single hole,' said Massimo Locicero of Toronto, Canada. 'You get to know where everyone is, what everyone's shooting, where they're at, on the green or on the fairway, it's really good.'
'It helps instead of just flipping through your phone, right?' Channel 11's Andrew Havranek asked.
'Yeah, it can be kind of delayed on the phone, so when it's on the broadcast, it's right away,' Locicero added.
You can pick up one radio per day, and one water bottle per weekend.

Advertisement Inside a hospitality suite overlooking the 17th green at Oakmont Country Club are three demo terminals that feature an avatar of USGA rules expert Jay Roberts standing with steepled fingertips and awaiting any questions about golf rules. To interact with the Rules of Golf AI Avatar, a user must tap and hold their finger on the screen while asking a question in either English, Spanish or Mandarin and then get answered in that same language. When asked what to do if a golfer finds an alligator in the same bunker where their ball is, the avatar quickly shows some mental wit: "An alligator in the bunker, now that's a hazard." The avatar then proceeds to tell the user they can either take free relief by dropping their ball at the nearest point in the bunker where they are safe, no closer to the hole, or take a penalty stroke and drop outside the bunker. Advertisement Deloitte, in collaboration with the United States Golf Association, created the demo using four years of USGA expert-answered rules inquiry data, combined with advanced AI to provide real-time and accurate answers to rules questions. The avatar is not yet accessible to the broader community or stakeholders that the USGA works with but could ultimately serve players through an app on their phone or perhaps on a screen in their golf cart. According to Lou DiLorenzo, Deloitte's National AI & Data Strategy leader, the technology can help further educate golfers on the rules of the game, which can help ensure fair play and perhaps even speed up the pace of play. "What we are doing here is using technology to help make the game and the rules more accessible, which is good for more people to enjoy playing it under fair play conditions," DiLorenzo told Reuters. Scottie Scheffler Sent Strong Message to Wife Meredith Before U.S. Open
Before he takes the court at Oakmont Country Club for the U.S. Open, world No. 1 and tournament favorite Scottie Scheffler received some kind words from two-time major winner Justin Thomas. 'It's effortless,' Thomas said. 'Every single aspect of his game is unbelievable. I think his mental game is better than anybody out here. To be able to play with those expectations and to stay present as often as he has to me is maybe more impressive than even the golf he's playing. I just think it's so, so hard to do, and it's also hard to explain if you're in his shoes. He just doesn't make any mistakes and almost kind of lets himself be in contention versus forces himself in contention. He just seems to be playing better.' Advertisement The clear betting favorite to win the tournament, Scheffler has won three of the past four tournaments he's entered - finishing fourth in the other. His latest win came at the Memorial Tournament put on by legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus where he won by four strokes. Following the tournament, Amanda Balionis got the star golfer to show some emotion with a question about his wife, Meredith. "You know, watching you, Meredith, and Bennett, it makes me think of Barbara Nicklaus all week this week and how she made so much of Jack's career possible with her support," she said. "Talk about what this balance looks and the support Meredith provides that allows you to be the best father, husband you can be while also being the No. 1 player in the world.' 'Yeah, you're really trying to make me emotional now. My wife is my biggest supporter," Scheffler said with his voice breaking. "She's my best friend. Meet the Wife of U.S. Open Leader J.J. Spaun
Heading into the U.S. Open the betting favorites were world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and reigning champion Bryson DeChambeau followed by a cadre of other elite golfers like Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa and Jon Rahm. The leader after Day 1, though, was none other than one-time PGA Tour winner J.J. Spaun. The longtime PGA Tour professional isn't a household name - at least to non-golf fans - but his game has been trending in the right direction this season. Advertisement He made the cut at the Masters back in April before finishing 50th. Spaun followed that up with a made cut at the PGA Championship where he finished in a tie for 37th before a t-6 at the Charles Schwab Challenge the following week. Earlier in the season he went toe-to-toe with McIlroy at the Players Championship where he lost in a playoff. Needless to say, Spaun has plenty of game, but no one thought he'd be leading the year's third major after Round 1. He carded four birdies in his first nine holes before finishing his round with 10 straight pars to sit in the clubhouse with a one-shot lead. Spaun's plan of attack at the golf course might be helped by a rule his wife, Melody, made for him - no more than five hours at the golf course. 'It was good,' he told back in 2023. 'Maybe I should stick to it. Five hours allotment of like, OK, you get five hours. You got to be back by this time, because sometimes I can get like stuck out here for a long time.' Advertisement Spaun admitted the new process helps make him more productive. 'I don't mess around and fraternize or socialize with everyone. Kind of just do my thing. Get it in there," he said. Spaun admitted there would be an adjustment on his five-hour time allotment if needed. 'So it's going to be hard. She said, well, yeah, if you start missing some cuts, we can adjust; we can add a couple hours there. This is, these are the conversations I have. I'm not even joking. I mean, this is how, our marriage, we don't, you know, it doesn't get too sideways. Happy wife, happy life," he said.
