A Chinese Innovation Opens New Horizons in Obesity Treatment
Professor Ji Linong, head of the research team and director of the Department of Endocrinology at Peking University People's Hospital, stated that results from the Phase III clinical trials—recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine—demonstrate that the drug not only aids in weight loss but also helps improve cholesterol levels, reduce waist circumference, regulate blood pressure, and lower uric acid levels.
Xiao Rui-Ping, deputy editor-in-chief of the same medical journal, emphasized that this discovery strengthens China's position at the forefront of nations leading locally developed obesity treatments.
According to medical reports, obesity poses a growing global health threat, with estimates suggesting that more than 50% of adults worldwide will be overweight or obese by 2050.
In China, obesity rates have more than doubled over the past four decades, exacerbating risks associated with conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and certain types of cancer, while also reducing life expectancy.
In response to this challenge, both local and international pharmaceutical companies have intensified efforts to develop effective drug treatments. In 2024, Chinese health authorities included anti-obesity drugs in their official treatment guidelines, approving five medications so far, most notably Semaglutide and Orlistat, which are currently available in the Chinese market.
Despite their effectiveness, experts stress that drug therapies alone are not a complete solution. They must be combined with other strategies—such as lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments, and physical activity—to achieve sustainable results.
To support this approach, China has launched national campaigns, including the establishment of weight management clinics in hospitals, the publication of official dietary guidelines, and the implementation of mandatory daily physical education in schools. Furthermore, since 2008, the country has observed an annual National Fitness Day on August 8, reflecting its commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles.
In summary, Mazdutide marks a promising step forward in tackling obesity, yet it remains part of a broader, integrated strategy requiring collective and individual efforts.

CDC Warns Americans About Chikungunya Virus Outbreak in China
Rabat — The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has advised US citizens to exercise extra caution when traveling to China. The warning comes as a mosquito-borne virus called chikungunya spreads quickly through parts of the Eastern country. The CDC issued the travel warning this month after cases started rising fast in Guangdong province. Most reports come from the city of Foshan, where Chinese health officials have counted more than 7,000 confirmed cases since June. Chikungunya virus spreads through mosquito bites. Most people who catch the virus develop symptoms within three to seven days after an infected mosquito bites them. The most common signs include fever and severe joint pain, with people also reporting headaches, muscle pain, swollen joints, and skin rashes. While most patients recover within a week, some suffer from joint pain for months or even years. The CDC warns that certain groups face higher risks, including newborn babies, adults over 65, and people with diabetes or heart disease. Deaths from chikungunya remain rare, but doctors have no specific treatment for the virus. Local authorities in Foshan have launched a large campaign against mosquitoes. Workers send drones into the sky to find places where mosquitoes breed. They spray residents with mosquito repellent before people can enter buildings. Officials also release mosquito-eating fish into ponds and other water sources. The outbreak in China forms part of a larger global problem. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control reports about 240,000 cases worldwide across 16 countries and territories. These cases have been linked to 90 deaths so far this year. The CDC said outbreaks also affect Bolivia, Kenya, and Sri Lanka, saying that Americans traveling to Brazil, Colombia, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Thailand face higher chances of catching the virus. How to stay safe Health officials recommend several ways to avoid mosquito bites. Travelers should use insect repellent and wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants. They should stay in places with air conditioning or screens on windows and doors. The CDC also suggests getting vaccinated. Two chikungunya vaccines have approval for use in the US. Officials recommend vaccination for anyone visiting areas with active outbreaks. Travelers should watch for warning signs during and after their trips. Anyone who develops fever, joint pain, headaches, muscle pain, joint swelling, or rashes should see a doctor right away. Tags: chikungunyachikungunya virusChinaUS citizens

A Chinese Innovation Opens New Horizons in Obesity Treatment
Chinese scientists have made a major breakthrough in the fight against obesity by developing a new drug, Mazdutide, which has shown remarkable effectiveness in reducing body weight and improving metabolic health indicators. China Seeks to Expand Multisectoral Cooperation with Morocco as Gateway to Africa
Rabat – China is eyeing a broader multisectoral partnership with Morocco and expanding its reach across Africa. Gong Zheng, mayor of the municipal People's Government of Shanghai, conveyed his country's ambition on Tuesday in Rabat during a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the deployment of the first Chinese medical teams to Morocco. During the event, the Chinese mayor emphasized the importance of cooperation between the two countries at all levels, including within the medical sector. He said that the Chinese medical teams have worked alongside their Moroccan counterparts to contribute to developing Morocco's healthcare system over the past five decades. He also said the experience contributed to boosting lasting ties of friendship and cooperation, hailing the growth and momentum in relations between China and African countries, which stems from President Xi Jinping's pledge to elevate these ties. For his part, Minister of Health Amine Tahraoui said that Morocco and China share a common vision for African development at all levels, including investment and technical cooperation, among others. He said that Morocco and China aspire to develop triangular cooperation with African countries, not only in health but also in other key sectors. Morocco is well-positioned to actively contribute to initiatives aimed at strengthening health systems, medical training, local pharmaceutical production, and expanding healthcare coverage across the continent, Tahraoui said. The Moroccan health minister emphasized how the Morocco-China partnership extends into fields like digital health, AI in medical care, training, biomedical research, and integrative traditional medicine. Morocco and China are tied with several joint initiatives, including the Bright Journey, a campaign targeting eye diseases, as well as the establishment of a traditional Chinese medicine center in Mohammedia. China donated medical equipment to Morocco during COVID-10, and has also trained Moroccan professionals in Chinese hospitals. In terms of economy, trade between the two countries increased by 50% between 2021 and 2022, reaching $7.6 billion. This makes China Morocco's third-largest trading partner and its top economic ally in Asia. China also injected $56 million into key sectors like transport, energy, and real estate. Mehdi Laraki, president of the Morocco-China Business Council, said in March 2024 that Morocco receives nearly 40 Chinese delegations annually, with China seeing the North African country not only as a standalone market but also as a gateway to Africa and Europe.
