Street renaming to honor Stephen Perkins moves forward

DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — A neighbor of the late Stephen Perkins is leading a push for Decatur city leaders to rename his former block from Ryan Drive to Steve Perkins Drive.
Perkins was killed by police in the early morning hours of Sept. 29, 2023, following an incident surrounding a vehicle repossession. Former Decatur Police Officer Mac Marquette is charged with murder in Perkins' death.

Sharonda Acklin lives on Ryan Drive, where the Perkins family was raising their children. Acklin describes Steve as a great community leader, and she wants the city to rename the block in his honor.
'The significance is the remembrance of a life that was ultimately taken entirely too soon,' said Acklin.
The house is where Catrela Perkins, the widow of Stephen Perkins, said they had planned to spend the rest of their lives.
'Ryan Drive has a significant meaning to the Perkins family and to me and Steve and the girls,' she explained. 'When we got married, we lived on Ryan Drive, so it holds a lot of weight in my heart.'

During its regular session on Tuesday, all eight members of the Decatur Planning Commission agreed with Acklin and voted unanimously to move the process forward to rename.
The planning commission says that 75% of the homeowners on Ryan Drive would have to approve of the name change. Acklin said that through a petition, she is three names away from approval.
'Steve was an asset to the community and going out and taking a consensus of how the people that live on Ryan Drive feel, we have a super majority,' said Acklin. 'They feel the way that we feel and are honored to remember his legacy in this manner.'
The Decatur City Council is set to meet for a work session on Monday April 28, before the measure is up for a vote at the next council meeting.

Suspect in murder of New River pastor in custody elsewhere: MCSO

The Brief A suspect has been identified in the case of a New River pastor's murder, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. The victim, 76-year-old William Schonemann, was found dead inside his home on April 28. Officials say the suspect is currently "in custody on unrelated charges in another jurisdiction." PHOENIX - Officials with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office say they have identified a suspect in connection with the murder of a pastor in the New River area. What we know In a statement, an MCSO spokesperson said the suspect they identified is currently "in custody on unrelated charges in another jurisdiction." "Coordination between agencies is ongoing as we work to move the investigation forward," read a portion of the statement. What we don't know Officials with MCSO did not identify the suspect who is currently in custody, nor did they reveal the jurisdiction where the suspect is currently being held. "We anticipate having more releasable details in the coming weeks, which we hope will provide additional clarity and progress in the case," read a portion of the statement. The backstory The victim in the case, identified as 76-year-old William Schonemann, was a pastor at New River Bible Chapel. He was found dead inside his home near 13th Avenue and Circle Mountain Road on April 28. Authorities have been tight-lipped on the case, but they previously said there were "unique, specific circumstances" to the case. The pastor's death left the community on edge. "I mean, we locked our doors last night. It's just something that we are just not used to doing. Everybody is just, until we know what's going on, we don't know if it was a family member, or, we don't know what, who could do this to him," said Mike Anders in early May. Anders lived next to the pastor for 12 years. What you can do Anyone with information on this case should call the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office at 602-876-TIPS (8477).

Judge orders man committed to state mental hospital after threat to destroy fire station

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — A Huntsville man charged with making threats against a Huntsville Fire Department station has been committed to the Alabama Department of Mental Health after a judge found his mental illness makes him a threat to himself or others. Madison County Circuit Judge Chris Comer said Friday that, based on two mental health evaluations of Craig Emerson and a subsequent hearing, Emerson is mentally ill and should remain in ADMH custody for treatment and therapy. State will seek death penalty against Huntsville man charged with killing 2 women in 2023 Emerson, 58, entered a plea of not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect to a charge of making terroristic threats. According to court documents, in 2021, Emerson threatened to blow up Huntsville Fire Station #5, prompting an investigation by local authorities. Due to concerns about his mental health, he was evaluated and subsequently committed to a state mental health facility for treatment in 2023. Records show he had mental health evaluations in February 2023 and November 2024. The court ordered that Emerson remain in the custody of the ADMH without being released unless authorized by the court. State court records show Emerson was previously arrested on multiple arson charges. In February 2013, he was charged with two counts of first-degree arson and one count of attempted arson after reportedly throwing Molotov cocktails into occupied homes in Huntsville. He pleaded guilty in 2015 to a count of first-degree attempted arson. Records show he was sentenced to 10 years in prison, but that sentence was suspended to time served and five years probation. MCSO: Hartselle man accused of rape now facing child pornography charge

MORGAN COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – A Hartselle man, who was charged in May with the rape of a minor, is now facing additional charges related to inappropriate messages sent to children. Benjamin Preston Bolan, 27, is now charged with possession of child pornography with the intent to distribute. On May 13, the sheriff's office Investigators and the Morgan County Fugitive Unit carried out a search warrant at an apartment complex on Mitwede Street in Hartselle. MCSO said the warrant was for a man wanted for rape involving a victim under the age of 15. However, MCSO said on Friday that investigators got search warrants for Bolan's Snapchat and cell phone back in April. They said that they found several hundred sexually explicit pictures, videos and chats with children, whose ages range from five to 15. The sheriff's office said Bolan, who was already in jail from his May arrest, now has a combined bond of $800,000. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
