Real Madrid vs Celta Vigo: Match preview

Yahoo04-05-2025
Following a heartbreaking defeat in the Copa Del Rey final last week, Real Madrid are set to face off against Celta Vigo in match day 34 of La Liga, in what happens to be an early kickoff.
This game is of utmost importance for both sides, but a lot more is at stake for the reigning European champions. Celta is all but set to play in the Europa League next season, but the Merengues have a slim chance of clinching the league title.

Real Madrid will have their task cut out since there are only 6 defenders in the squad, with 2 being called up from Castilla. One of them, Youssef Lekhedim, is likely to receive minutes tomorrow, while Aurelien Tchouameni may partner up with Raul Asencio in defence.
The Spaniard has been average in the past few games, but will have to rise to the occasion since he will have an important part to play in the final five matches, with Antonio Rudiger ruled out for the rest of the season.
To pile onto problems, Rodrygo has not been called up for this fixture due to a cold and slight fever. It was a surprising exclusion to say the least, following a week when it was rumored that he might be on the verge of leaving the club.
Madrid's midfield will have an important role against Celta, and they'll be further boosted by Arda Guler's recent performances. Carlo Ancelotti heaped praise on the youngster in the pre-match presser, and he is in line to receive a start.

Moreover, Kylian Mbappe has been the club's best attacker this season and is 3 goals behind Robert Lewandowski's league goal tally, sitting on 22 goals. His partner up front, Vinicius Junior's decision-making in the final third has been questionable, and the Brazilian will look to end the season on a high.

On the other hand, Celta Vigo are comfortably placed 7th in the table, and although they do have a chance to finish 5th at least and earn a spot in the Champions League, that seems unlikely since they are 12 points behind and just 5 games remain in the season.
However, they surely won't go down without a fight, especially considering their history with Los Blancos and how they've given the men in white a tough time.

As always, Iago Aspas, the visitors' captain and leading goal-scorer, will be the danger man, along with Borja Iglesias – the duo scoring 9 goals each in La Liga.
Aspas, in particular, has a knack for scoring crucial goals and steps up in big games. Since Real Madrid has a vulnerable defense, the Spaniard will look to take his chances. Defensively, even Celta are penetrable, and the duo of Vinicius and Mbappe will look to cause trouble to the away side.
These sides have met twice this season, with Los Blancos winning both ties – once in a close encounter at the Balaidos, followed by the Copa Del Rey quarter-final where the Merengues scored 5 past them.
This game is expected to be a cracking encounter as Celta Vigo looks to be a thorn in Madrid's race to the league title. A loss here will surely put an end to any title-winning hopes for the men in white.

Donnarumma left out of PSG squad for UEFA Super Cup

Paris Saint-Germain have left Gianluigi Donnarumma out of the squad for the UEFA Super Cup clash with Tottenham Hotspur in Udine, a further sign the Italian's time there is over. It kicks off at the Stadio Friuli on Wednesday evening, the traditional season opener between the Champions League winners and holders of the Europa League trophy. The tension between goalkeeper and club is escalating to new levels after talks for a new contract broke down definitively. His current deal only runs to the end of the season, so he could leave as a free agent in June 2026, while PSG already signed his replacement Lucas Chevalier. PSG sent strong Donnarumma message MUNICH, GERMANY – MAY 31: Gianluigi Donnarumma of Paris Saint-Germain celebrates after Desire Doue of Paris Saint-Germain (not pictured) scores his team's second goal during the UEFA Champions League Final 2025 between Paris Saint-Germain and FC Internazionale Milano at Munich Football Arena on May 31, 2025 in Munich, Germany. (Photo by) If Donnarumma had hoped to battle it out with the new man for the gloves, then Luis Enrique sent a message by leaving him out of the travelling party entirely. This suggests the shot-stopper has already played his final game in the Paris Saint-Germain jersey, despite helping them to the Quadruple last season, including victory in the Champions League. The Premier League is likely to be the next destination for the Italy international, with Manchester United the favourites ahead of Manchester United and Chelsea. Galatasaray and Bayern Munich have also shown an interest, but Inter and Juventus would struggle to sustain his wages.

Barcelona in Miami? Spain's LaLiga Moves Closer to Hosting U.S.-Based Game

LaLiga Barcelona in Miami? Spain's LaLiga Moves Closer to Hosting U.S.-Based Game Updated Aug. 11, 2025 12:37 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Lamine Yamal playing an actual regular-season match for Barcelona at the home of the NFL's Miami Dolphins? It could happen. Soccer fans in the U.S. have long been used to seeing some of Europe's biggest clubs play exhibition matches and friendlies during the summer, but now Spain's LaLiga is closer to hosting a regular-season match stateside. And it would include the league's defending champions. The Spanish soccer federation on Monday approved a request for the match between Barça and Villarreal to be played in Miami on Dec. 20. The federation will now seek approval from soccer governing bodies UEFA and FIFA. The 17th-round match in LaLiga would be played at the Hard Rock Stadium. Staging a match abroad has been part of the league's goal of promoting soccer and its brand in other countries. The league is in a long-term partnership with sports and entertainment group Relevent Sports, which is part of Stephen Ross' portfolio of companies including Hard Rock Stadium, the Miami Dolphins, the Formula One's Miami Grand Prix and the Miami Open tennis tournament. LaLiga has been pushing to host a regular-season match in the U.S. for numerous years, similarly to the way the NFL has hosted games in Europe, Mexico and Brazil. In 2018-19, the Spanish league proposed a game between Barcelona and Girona. Another game between Villarreal and Athletico Madrid for the following season fell through. Interestingly enough, the Dolphins will be playing a regular-season game in Spain – taking on the Washington Commanders on Nov. 16 at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium – home of Barcelona's longtime rivals, Real Madrid.
