East High student claims she was given fentanyl-laced candy on school bus
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — A 14-year-old East High student suffered an overdose in class after she claims another student gave her a fentanyl-laced candy on the bus.
The 14-year-old student, Gabby Romo, said she had received snacks before from the same acquaintance who gave her the candy.
'He had got on the bus after me and he came to the back. He was like, 'Well, I got some candy. Do y'all want some?' I was like, 'Sure.' And then he gave me like three of them and he was passing them out to everybody else,' Gabby recalled.
It was soon after, in her first class, that Gabby said she started feeling the effects of the drug.
'It was about time for us [to leave], the bell was going to ring, and I'm sitting up, rocking back and forth, I'm seeing things, and then I just vomit everywhere,' she said. 'I thought I was just gonna die or my heart was going to stop.'
Gabby said she was in and out of consciousness while she was being transported to UW SwedishAmerican.
Doctors said she suffered an 'accidental fentanyl overdose.'
'Seeing the word overdose to me… I see 'your child almost died,'' said Gabby's mother, Jasmine Shearer.
Shearer said she hopes the scary situation can be used as a warning to others.
'Poisoning kids isn't just happening at Halloween anymore. This is a year-round thing,' she said. 'You have to check everything your kid has, screen who your kid was hanging out with, get to know who your kid is hanging out with. In the end of the day, my daughter didn't really know this person by their first name. Nobody really knew this boy but by his first name. But because, you know, always passing out stuff, being friendly, they never saw it coming. She never saw it coming.'
One of Shearer's friends posted about the incident on Facebook, prompting a response from Rockford Public Schools, which issued a statement, saying, 'We are aware of a social media post alleging that multiple East HS students were impacted by an illegal substance shared on a school bus. We have been unable to substantiate the incident at this time. The Rockford Police Department is investigating.'
The Rockford Police Department confirmed an 'active and ongoing investigation' is underway.
'I want answers. I want to know what consequences are happening. I want to know where this situation is leading,' Shearer said.

Former teen mom credits Rockford nurse for inspiration to pursue a nursing career
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — A mother who gave birth at 15 years old gave credit to a nurse who was instrumental in guiding her after pregnancy for inspiring her to become a nurse. Cherish Adams, now a mother to three children, has completed her nursing degree. Adams said Jeannine Joseph, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Nurse, helped her realize she wanted to pursue the career. The realization started to take shape when Adams gave birth to her oldest child and was thinking about giving him to the Swedish American Hospital in a shoebox. Adams explained that this was the most terrified she had ever felt in her life. 'When I finally did go up to the hospital, I just remember being really scared and very overwhelmed because, again, I hadn't told anyone anything about this,' said Adams. Joseph was one of the first people to know how the situation was taking a toll on Adams personally. 'She's in school, but this does not mean that you have to give up on your dreams,' Joseph explained to Adams. 'You still can go to school, you still can graduate from high school, you still can go to college, and you can make the best life that you can for you and Allen.' After 21 years, Adams is graduating from Rasmussen University-Rockford with an Associate's Degree in Nursing. She gave Joseph credit for helping put her on this path through all the chaos and confusion. 'Honestly, it just makes me feel very excited and just very accomplished,' said Adams. 'On top of graduating from nursing school, I'm actually getting to take a position in the same hospital where Jeannie inspired me. So, it's really this a huge full circle moment.' Illinois Department of Healthcare data breach reveals Social Security and child support details
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTVO) — The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) is alerting the public to a data breach that may have exposed customers' private information to hackers. According to HFS, the agency became aware of a phishing campaign targeting its employees around February 11th, 2025. The agency said employees' emails and documents were compromised, and may have included customer names, social security numbers, driver's license or state ID number, financial information related to child support, child support or Medicaid identification and case numbers, and birth dates. HFS said 933 individuals were impacted in the breach, 564 of which were Illinois residents. The Department said all affected individuals were notified by May 23rd. 'Potentially affected individuals can also contact consumer reporting agencies to place a free fraud alert or security freeze on their accounts, or the Federal Trade Commission to learn more about fraud alerts, credit freezes, or other identity theft resources,' HFS said. Nikhil Webb Walker returns to Colorado football workouts after lymphoma battle Colorado Buffaloes defensive lineman Nikhil Webb Walker is back on the field, less than a year after being diagnosed with lymphoma. Webb Walker participated in Thursday's summer workout at CU's indoor practice facility, as reported by "The Pregame Show." The junior defensive end appeared in the first five games of last season, mostly on special teams, before stepping away in October to undergo treatment. "It feels good, man," Webb Walker told Thee Pregame Show. "The altitude gets me a little bit, but we're going to be back straight soon." According to Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, Webb Walker wrapped up his chemotherapy in March and has been on the mend since then. A native of Jamaica, Webb Walker began his college career at New Mexico State before transferring to Colorado ahead of his sophomore season. As an Aggie, he starred in 12 games, including four starts, where he put up good numbers, finishing the year with 25 tackles, five tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble. During his first year with the Buffs, Webb Walker was primarily a special-teams player but played his first defensive snaps during the Week 5 game against UCF. If Webb Walker is fully healthy entering the season, he provides defensive coordinator Robert Livingston another versatile weapon along the defensive line. The Buffs led the Big 12 in sacks last season, so it might be a formidable lineup to crack.
