A 30-year-old London man has been charged with robbery after police allege he stole another man's dog after striking him with a pair of pliers.
Police say the victim had been walking his dog in the area of Base Line Road West and Cotswold Gate around 10:40 p.m. on Sunday when the suspect, unknown to him, approached and told him to hand over his dog.
An argument led to the suspect allegedly brandishing a pair of pliers and striking the man several times, and then fleeing on foot with his canine.
The man was hospitalized for injuries described by police as serious but not life-threatening.
A bystander called 911 and police say they located the suspect a short distance away and arrested him. The dog was later found at the suspect's home by members of the street crime unit and returned to the man.
The accused, a 30-year-old man from London, was due in court Wednesday for one count of robbery, police said.

OPP arrest man for shooting neighbours' dog in Peterborough

Ontario Provincial Police say they have arrested and charged a 67-year-old man after his neighbours' dog was shot in Peterborough County. Police say they were called to the scene Sunday morning after the dog owners said their pet had been missing for about a week. OPP say the family heard gunshots around the time the dog went missing. They say the family was led to believe their dog had been shot and killed by their neighbour. After speaking with all parties involved, police say they charged the neighbour with killing or injuring animals. Police say he is expected to appear in court in September.
