a16z Bets Big on EigenLayer Again With $70M Token Buy to Back ‘EigenCloud' Launch
The investment follows a16z's $100 million Series B in Eigen Labs in February 2024, and underscores its commitment to the project through its Crypto Fund IV.
EigenLayer currently secures over $12 billion in restaked assets.
EigenCloud allows developers to build trustless, verifiable applications that operate off-chain while anchoring trust and payments on the Ethereum blockchain.
Companies like Securitize will use EigenCloud to verify asset pricing data for BlackRock's $2 billion BUIDL fund.
The platform introduces new services, EigenVerify for dispute resolution and EigenCompute for offchain execution, alongside existing AVSs like EigenDA for data, the companies said.
By transforming verifiability into a programmable cloud primitive, EigenCloud is targeting sectors like AI, media, betting markets, and enterprise software, as it aims to unlock a new wave of crypto-native and Web2-integrated applications.
'EigenCloud will enable the next generation of disruptive, mass-market crypto apps, closing the gap between what developers want to build onchain and what blockchains allow them to build,' said Sreeram Kannan, CEO of Eigen Labs, in the release.
The alpha rollout includes performance upgrades, dispute tooling, and a developer roadmap for phased access.

Bitcoin Jumps to New All-Time High Price as Ethereum Nears Record
Bitcoin hit another all-time high price mark on Wednesday as a increasingly favorable macro environment pushes traders to take more risk. And Ethereum might be following right behind. The leading cryptocurrency hit a new peak price of $122,882 on Wednesday afternoon, beating its previous July record of $122,838, CoinGecko data shows. Stocks also soared to close in on new highs as traders remained hopeful that the Federal Reserve will soon cut interest rates. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq both set record highs on Wednesday, with the Dow nearing its own record. Over a seven-day period, Bitcoin has soared by 6%. Year-to-date, it is up 30% from when it opened 2025 trading at $94,384. The coin first hit the long-awaited $100,000 mark in December, boosted by President Trump's November election win and increased investor interest in American Bitcoin exchange-traded funds. Bitcoin has typically traded like a "risk-on" asset, along with tech equities, and performed well in the past in a low interest rate environment. Crypto-friendly President Donald Trump has piled on pressure to the U.S. central bank's chair, Jerome Powell, to cut rates. The new commander in chief has previously called Powell a "major loser" and a "fool," and threatened to fire him, and this week even talked about using a lawsuit to get interest rates lower. The Fed is supposed to be independent, and the White House seldom meddles in the bank's affairs. Ethereum Could Soar to $25,000 by 2028: Standard Chartered Other major cryptocurrencies, including Ethereum, roared as well on Wednesday, with the second biggest digital coin also fast closing in on a new high. Ethereum last set a record price of $4,878 back in November 2021, but has lingered well below that mark until recently, even while Bitcoin repeatedly pushed to new peaks. Now, ETH is priced at $4,728, putting the current price just 3% below the record. Biotech Stock Plunges on Bitcoin Plans as Ethereum Treasuries Stay Hot
Bitcoin hit a new record high price on Wednesday, and Ethereum may be poised to do the same very soon. But as ETH treasury firms' stocks have surged on the recent market momentum, shares of at least one of their BTC counterparts are trending in the opposite direction. Lixte Biotechnology's stock (LIXT) finished the day trading 16% lower at $4.06 per share on Wednesday, shortly after the clinical-stage pharmaceutical firm announced its plan to allocate up to 25% of its reserves to a Bitcoin treasury, Yahoo Finance data shows. The LIXT sell-off comes as investors appear to pivot from Bitcoin to Ethereum-based treasury firms, as ETH rides recent tailwinds to outperform the world's oldest cryptocurrency. Bitcoin treasuries were all the rage until recently, when a new crop of firms embraced ETH—and apparently helped fuel the coin's recent gains. '2025 is the year of the Ethereum treasury reserve strategy," Bitwise Research Analyst Danny Nelson told Decrypt. 'The simple reason is momentum,' Nelson explained. 'Ethereum's got it in a way Bitcoin doesn't.' Ethereum was recently trading at $4,763, up 58% this month and 75% over the past year. The token is hovering less than 3% below its all-time high of $4,878 hit in November 2021 as of writing time, according to data provider CoinGecko. By comparison, Bitcoin has remained largely flat, up just 2% over the past month. While BTC indeed set a fresh milestone on Wednesday, its recent gains have been muted compared to the wild upward swing seen by ETH—a coin that had largely been on the sidelines as Bitcoin and other coins surged earlier this year. Bitcoin Jumps to New All-Time High Price as Ethereum Nears Record Ethereum's comparatively strong gains have been fueled by investors' perception of ETH as being 'uniquely suited' to ride the recent stablecoin business boom, Nelson said, as well as 'farm the regulatory green fields' of SEC Chair Paul Atkins' Project Crypto initiative to overhaul the U.S.' regulatory guardrails for the cryptocurrency industry. Ethereum treasury boom Ethereum treasury companies now hold nearly 3% of the total circulating ETH supply, per data from Strategic ETH Reserve. And that figure is poised to grow significantly: In the past week, BitMine Immersion, which now holds more than $5 billion in ETH, announced that it is selling another $20 billion worth of its common stock to buy even more tokens for its corporate treasury. And as companies have invested more into ETH, their stock prices have also swelled. Ethereum treasury firms ETHZilla aka 180 Life Sciences (ATNF), BitMine Immersion (BMNR) and SharpLink Gaming (SBET) have seen their shares rise 211%, 48%, and 8% over the last five trading days, respectively. ETHZilla Ethereum Treasury Stock Skyrockets After Peter Thiel Buys Stake By comparison, leading Bitcoin treasury firm Strategy has seen its stock price stay nearly flat over the last week, down nearly 14% over the last month. The recent flood of funds into Ethereum and their corporate holders 'points to swings in investor interest,' Nelson told Decrypt. 'They want a piece of the best-performing large-cap crypto asset of recent months,' he said. LI fraudster sentenced to 4 years after blowing nearly $2M in COVID cash on watches, luxury hotels and crypto
A Long Island man who blew almost $2 million in COVID relief money on Patek watches, luxury hotels, and crypto coins was sentenced to four years in prison Wednesday. Niall Alli, 52, of Inwood, pleaded guilty in December 2023 to disaster relief fraud and wire fraud for swindling the Small Business Administration out of more than $1.7 million in Paycheck Protection Program loans during the height of the pandemic, federal prosecutors said. He will now have to pay back every cent — along with an extra approximately $135,000 in asset forfeiture from corporate bank accounts and Ethereum from a corporate Coinbase wallet. Watches made by Swiss watch brand Patek Philippe SA are seen on display Thursday, Aug. 7, 2025, in New York. AP 'Alli saw the COVID-19 programs and the deadly pandemic as an avenue for stealing money from the government and taxpayers,' said U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. '[Alli] now knows the price of such conduct is the loss of his freedom and full restitution to the Small Business Administration.' From April 2020 to November 2021, Alli used two companies he controlled — Allicorp, Inc. and Oxypaper, Inc. — to file bogus PPP applications stuffed with fake payroll records and phony financial data, officials said. Once the cash hit his accounts, he doubled down with fraudulent forgiveness requests backed by fabricated statements. Prosecutors said the cash fueled Alli's lavish lifestyle, including nearly $500,000 in cryptocurrency, two Patek Philippe wristwatches worth about $140,000 each, and $36,000 for just one single stay at a luxury Manhattan hotel on top of other luxurious hotel stays for over $10,000 each. Alli pleaded guilty in December 2023 to disaster relief fraud and wire fraud for swindling the Small Business Administration out of more than $1.7 million in Paycheck Protection Program loans during the height of COVID-19. Yuriy T – They added that Alli also used the PPP funds to pay for private school tuition for his child, and nonchalantly splurged on $800 champagne and $600 Scotch at high-end restaurants.
