Lake County crashes leave 1 dead, another critically injured
The cyclist, who was 19, died in what police say was a hit-and-run incident in Beach Park.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office said it was called at about 5:50 a.m. Sunday for a report of a motorcycle and rider down off the roadway near the intersection of Green Bay Road and Sallmon Avenue.
Officers responded and found the deceased rider near a Kawasaki sports bike. The motorcycle, according to police, had damage consistent with being struck by another vehicle which then left the scene.
An autopsy has been scheduled. The identity of the rider has not been released.
A criminal investigation is being conducted, the sheriff's office said.
In the second incident, a Volo woman was critically injured when she reportedly ran a red light and struck another vehicle near Grayslake Sunday morning, the sheriff's office said.
The woman, 32, was driving east on Illinois Route 60 at about 7 a.m. when witnesses reported that she failed to stop at a red light at the Fairfield Road intersection, police said.
The woman's car, a Volkswagen Atlas, collided in the intersection with a southbound Nissan Pathfinder driven by a Round Lake Beach woman. Both vehicles then struck a light pole, police said.
The Volo woman was transported to a hospital with critical injuries, police said. The driver and two passengers in the other vehicle were taken to a hospital. Police said their injuries were not life-threatening.
