Future Spartan named Michigan's Mr. Baseball, first team all-state selection
Michigan State baseball is in the process of rebuilding their roster for the 2026 season, but one thing Jake Boss has going for him, an absolute stud in the incoming recruiting class.
Logan Lacourse made his commitment to Michigan State in 2023, and has been steadfast in his commitment to the Spartans throughout all of this time. Now, in his senior year at Bay City Western High School, Lacourse has been honored as the top player in the state of Michigan.
Lacourse has been named as Michigan's Mr. Baseball, while also earning first team all-state honors. This caps a remarkable four year run the future Spartan has had with Western including being named to the MHSBCA Dream Team in both 2024 and 2025, being all-state in 2024 and 2025, being selected to the MHSBCA All-Star team this year and being named a finalist for the 2025 Gatorade Player of the Year.
Barring an high pick in the 2025 MLB Draft, Lacourse will be a major player for the Spartans in 2026.

Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports has released an updated batch of preseason rankings for the 2025-26 college basketball season, and the Spartans remain listed just outside the top 20. Rothstein has the Spartans at No. 21 in his updated version of the rankings that were released on Tuesday. Among Big Ten teams, the Spartans rank No. 5 in Rothstein's list but there is a notable drop off after the top three. He has Purdue (No. 1), Michigan (No. 5) and UCLA (No. 7) all in the top 10, and then next from the Big Ten is Oregon (No. 20) one spot before the Spartans. Michigan State is the reigning Big Ten champs and went the furthest of any team from the league in the NCAA Tournament by reaching the Elite Eight this past season. However, the Spartans have lost a number of key pieces off that highly-successful team, including leading scorers Jase Richardson and Jaden Akins -- so many like Rothstein anticipate a step back from the Spartans next season. As I've said during most of this offseason, I feel like anywhere from No. 15 to No. 25 is about right for the Spartans in next year's preseason poll. I would be quite surprised if they were any higher than No. 15 and shocked if they were unranked when the official preseason polls drop in a few months. Michigan State football is halfway through fall preseason camp, with the team holding their first scrimmage this past weekend. That scrimmage provided head coach Jonathan Smith, with some interesting insight on the team -- which he shared on Monday. Jonathan Smith provides interesting update on MSU O-Line depth
Depth within the offensive line was a concern last season for the Spartans, but that doesn't appear to be the case anymore. Michigan State is in the midst of fall preseason camp, with the Spartans kicking off week three of practice earlier on Monday. As part of progressing into week three, Spartans head coach Jonathan Smith met with the media on Monday to discuss a number of topics surrounding his team. One of those was the depth he's seeing at offensive line. According to a post from Emmett Matasovsky of Spartan Shadows, Smith said there's a battle for the starting five spots on the offensive line, with "close to 10 guys" still in the mix. This quote is particularly interesting because, to me, this suggests they feel pretty good about essentially their entire two deep at offensive line. Michigan State's offensive line has been a weakness for the Spartans for what feels like a decade at this point. Sure, there have been bright spots along the way, but it hasn't been a unit that has given the fan base much faith over at least the last few seasons at a minimum. If Michigan State can put together an average Big Ten offensive line, I feel very confident in what they can achieve this season on that side of the ball. The skilled position groups all seem to be upper-tier in the league, with the offensive line being the biggest question mark. However, it's starting to sound like we should be putting more faith and expectations into that unit as we inch closer and close to the start of the 2025 season.
