Oil Updates — prices soar more than 9% after Israel strikes Iran, rattling investors
SINGAPORE: Oil prices surged more than 9 percent on Friday, hitting their highest in almost five months after Israel struck Iran, dramatically escalating tensions in the Middle East and raising worries about disrupted oil supplies.
Brent crude futures jumped $6.29, or 9.07 percent, to $75.65 a barrel by 06:15 a.m. Saudi time after hitting an intraday high of $78.50, the highest since Jan. 27. US West Texas Intermediate crude was up $6.43, or 9.45 percent, at $74.47 a barrel after hitting a high of $77.62, the loftiest since Jan. 21.
Friday's gains were the largest intraday moves for both contracts since 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine, causing energy prices to spike.
Israel said it targeted Iran's nuclear facilities, ballistic missile factories and military commanders on Friday at the start of what it warned would be a prolonged operation to prevent Tehran from building an atomic weapon.
'This has elevated geopolitical uncertainty significantly and requires the oil market to price in a larger risk premium for any potential supply disruptions,' ING analysts led by Warren Patterson said in a note.
Several oil traders in Singapore said it was still too early to say if the strike will affect Middle East oil shipments as it will depend on how Iran retaliates and if the US will intervene.
'It's too early to tell but I think the market is worried about shutting off of the Strait of Hormuz,' one of the traders said.
MST Marquee senior energy analyst Saul Kavonic said the conflict would need to escalate to the point of Iranian retaliation on oil infrastructure in the region before oil supply is materially impacted.
He added that Iran could hinder up to 20 million barrels per day of oil supply via attacks on infrastructure or limiting passage through the Strait of Hormuz, in an extreme scenario.
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Israel will receive 'harsh punishment' following Friday's attack that he said killed several military commanders.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday called Israel's strikes against Iran a 'unilateral action' and said Washington was not involved while also urging Tehran not to target US interests or personnel in the region.
'Iran has announced an emergency and is preparing to retaliate, which raises the risk of not just disruptions but of contagion in other neighbouring oil producing nations too,' said Priyanka Sachdeva, senior market analyst at Phillip Nova.
'Although Trump has shown reluctance to participate, US involvement could further raise concerns.'
In other markets, stocks dived in early Asian trade, led by a selloff in US futures, while investors scurried to safe havens such as gold and the Swiss franc.

We believe this deal will create added value for our shareholders.' The transaction will be funded through Almarai's internal cash flows and is subject to fulfilling all contractual conditions and obtaining necessary regulatory approvals in the Kingdom. Almarai also confirmed that there are no related parties involved in the transaction and pledged to disclose any material updates regarding the deal in the future. Founded in 1977, Almarai is one of the largest food production and distribution companies in the Middle East, offering fresh dairy, yogurt and cheese, as well as juices, baked goods, poultry, and infant nutrition products. Listed on Tadawul since 2005, it remains one of the market's highest-valued companies. According to the General Authority for Statistics, bottled water was the primary source of drinking water used by households in Saudi Arabia in 2023, with a reliance rate of 57.24 percent. This was followed by public network water at 23.56 percent and tanker water at 18.60 percent. Given the heavy reliance on bottled water, the Saudi Water Authority plays a pivotal role in regulating and improving water sources — ensuring sustainability, safety, and accessibility across all supply methods. The authority is the competent body in the Kingdom for all water system affairs at the supervisory and regulatory levels, providing strategic support to the sector through regulatory control and supervision.

Pakistani religiopolitical party to organize anti-Israel ‘million march' in Hyderabad today
KARACHI: A leading religiopolitical party, Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam Pakistan, (JUI-F) announced it would organize a 'million march' in the southern city of Hyderabad against Israel today, Sunday, to express solidarity with the people of Palestine. The march will take place as tensions in the Middle East surged late Friday night after Israel attacked Iran's nuclear facilities and military leadership. Iran's prominent nuclear scientists and the chief of its Revolutionary Guards paramilitary force were killed in the attack, which Tehran said claimed 78 lives and injured over 300. Iran has since then conducted retaliatory strikes against Israel. So far, at least nine people in Israel have been killed and over 300 others injured since Friday, as per media reports. In a statement released to the media, a JUI-F spokesperson said the party's caravans from all over the southern Sindh province are gathering at Hyderabad's Qasim Chowk venue for the protest. 'A strong protest will be held against Israel and solidarity will be expressed with the Palestinians,' the statement said. Israel has killed over 55,000 Palestinians in Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, as per the Gaza Health Ministry. Israeli forces have destroyed vast areas of the territory and displaced about 90 percent of Gazans. In recent weeks, more than half of Gaza has been transformed into a military buffer zone that includes the now mostly uninhabited southern city of Rafah. Israel's war on Gaza has incited anger in various countries across the world, including Pakistan. Various civil rights organizations and political parties such as the Jamaat-e-Islami, have held large gatherings in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and other parts of the country to denounce Israel's military campaigns in the Middle East. JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman will address participants of the rally, the party said. 'Strict security arrangements are in place in Hyderabad,' the statement said. 'Supporters gathered at the Qasim Chowk venue are highly enthusiastic.' Israel says it attacked Iran in a bid to discourage the Islamic country from developing nuclear weapons. Israel sees Iran's nuclear program as a threat to its existence. It said the bombardment was designed to avert the last steps to the production of a nuclear weapon. Tehran insists the program is entirely civilian and that it does not seek an atomic bomb. The UN nuclear watchdog, however, reported Iran this week as violating obligations under the global non-proliferation treaty. Pakistan has criticized Israel in strong words and repeatedly said Iran has the right to retaliate under the United Nations Charter. Islamabad has also vowed to offer diplomatic support to Iran at international forums.
