Nitish directs strict action against corruption
Patna, May 16 (UNI) Continuing his Zero tolerance policy against corruption,
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar directed the senior authorities to initiate strict measures to check corruption.
Reviewing the progress of the Vigilance department and functioning of its various cells in high-level meetings here on Friday, Kumar said that his government was functioning on the policy of judicious development and a zero tolerance policy against corruption.
Asking the state administration to follow the principle of corruption-free governance, Kumar instructed the Vigilance department to be more sensitive and act speedily against corruption cases.
Directing them to initiate strict action against corruption, Kumar said that the cases should be disposed of at an accelerated pace through active investigation. He also asked the authorities to improve the monitoring of the functioning of the department, right from top to bottom.
The Chief Minister said that the department should also sensitise people through the control room and toll-free numbers to report against corruption.
Kumar asked to take immediate action against every complaint and said that the informers should not be put in any inconvenient situation.
He asked for stern action against the troublemakers and any system operating against the norms so that the common people could get the due benefit of the facilities.
Stressing the need for special monitoring of sub-divisional offices, block offices, police Stations, engineering, administrative departments, education, health, anganwadi, mining, transport and all other departments, the chief minister also asked for district magistrates' level monitoring to instil confidence among the common people towards the administration. He asked the authorities to conduct a surprise inspection of the implementation of MNREGA and other public welfare schemes and take action in case of any irregularity.
Corruption will not be tolerated at any level, he said, adding that everyone should work diligently to prevent corruption.
Additional Chief Secretary Home Arvind Kumar Choudhary, through his presentation, apprised the Chief Minister that the department was functioning with utmost sensitivity and speed to check corruption.
Director General of Vigilance Bureau J S Gangwar informed about the details of the cases, investigation and actions taken by the bureau, whereas Additional Director General of Police, Special Vigilance unit Pankaj Darad outlined the details of how his department was cooperating in corruption-free governments.
Additional Director General of Police Economic Offence Unit Nayyar Hasnain Khan, said that the unit was efficiently working against the cases of economic offence and cyber fraud.

Ludhiana: ASI gets 4-year jail in bribery case
The special court of judge Amrinder Singh Shergill has convicted assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Tarsem Singh in a four-year-old corruption case, sentencing him to four years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹25,000. The conviction comes in connection with a bribery incident in 2021 when the ASI was caught red-handed while accepting ₹1,500 for executing non-bailable warrants. The convict sought leniency claiming that his wife and three children were dependent upon him and that he is the sole bread earner of his family. However, the prosecution firmly opposed the request, arguing that instead of performing his official duties with integrity, he chose to solicit a bribe from a complainant in exchange for fulfilling a basic legal responsibility. The court, in its judgement, mentioned that in these facts and circumstances, coupled with the offence, which the convict has committed, leave no scope for a lenient view against him. The case dates back to February 25, 2021, when the vigilance bureau arrested ASI Tarsem Singh, who was then posted at the division number 8 police station. He was apprehended while accepting a bribe from Rahul Kumar, a resident of New Kundanpuri, for serving a court-issued non-bailable warrant in a cheque bounce case. According to the complaint filed by Kumar, he had moved court against one Rajat Rana for issuing a dishonoured cheque. The court subsequently issued non-bailable warrants against Rana and directed the police to serve them. However, Kumar alleged that ASI Singh deliberately delayed executing the warrants. When Kumar followed up, the ASI allegedly demanded ₹2,000 as a bribe, though the amount was eventually settled at ₹1,500. Unwilling to pay the bribe, Kumar approached the Vigilance Bureau, which laid a trap. ASI Singh was caught in the act and arrested. A case was registered against him under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Senior BNP leader says elections should be held in December 2025, and not April next year
Dhaka, June 7 (UNI) Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam, reiterating his party's stance on the national polls, said that elections should be held in December 2025, and the proposed April 2026 date is not viable for holding polls. Citing adverse weather, Ramadan, and public examinations as his reasons, the BNP leader said: "The time (April) is not the right time for elections in Bangladesh. There is a risk of extreme heat, storms, and rain. Ramadan… and public examinations will also be taking place. It seems that not much thought has been given to this timeframe." Chief Advisor Mohammed Yunus had announced April 2026 as the date for holding the national polls, which the party described as a "disappointing" decision, The Daily Star reported. The party claimed that the 84-year-old CA's decision was aimed at "appeasing a select group of political parties", alluding to the hardline Islamic fundamentalist groups like Jamaat-e-Islami, and the National Citizen Party, who said that no polls can be held until "justice" is not delivered to the "martyrs" of the July Uprising. "BNP has been demanding elections by December, which reflected the peoples' expectations. We believe elections can be held in December, and that would be the most suitable time for the nation," he added. Upon the announcement by CA Yunus, the BNP Standing Committee noted that he did not provide any clear justification as to why holding the election by December would not be feasible, and instead touched upon topics like construction of ports and foreign policy issues – subjects that did not fall under an interim government's ambit. "The BNP has repeatedly said that it wants elections as soon as possible. We had hoped that Dr Muhammad Yunus would announce the election date by December. Patiala cops arrest man facing 17 cases after shootout
Patiala: The CIA staff of Patiala police on Saturday arrested a gangster associated with the Goldy Dhillon gang after a shootout on Sadhu Bela Road in the Urban Estate of Patiala. Police identified the gangster as 27-year-old Sunny Kumar alias Tari, a resident of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Colony near Rajpura Colony, Patiala. Patiala SSP Varun Sharma claimed that a team received information that he was planning a major crime in some area of Patiala, following which a team led by CIA Patiala in-charge Pradeep Singh Bajwa chased Kumar, who was on a stolen motorcycle, on Sadhu Bela Road. "The criminal, cornered by the CIA staff police, fired four shots at the police with an illegal .32 bore pistol," said the SSP. Sharma added the police team shot the accused in the leg, after which he was apprehended on the spot. A stolen motorcycle, a pistol, and three cartridges were seized from him. "Kumar had been workingfor the Goldy Dhillon gang for two years, which committed crimes in the Rajpura area recently. Kumar is a hardened criminal with 17 cases registered against him, including under the NDPS Act", said Varun Sharma. SSP praised the bravery of SP (investigation) Gurbans Singh Bains and inspector Pradeep Bajwa, stating their prompt action prevented a sensational crime in Patiala district.
