Harvey Willgoose murder accused carried knife for protection, court told
On Friday, the teenager told jurors he did not want to go to school on the morning he killed Harvey because "I thought I was going to get hurt that day".Giving evidence in his defence for a third day, he told the court he ordered the knife because it was "scary looking", adding: "If I pulled it out, somebody wouldn't try to pull out theirs."The boy's barrister, Gul Nawaz Hussain KC, asked him: "We know you took a knife to school with you that morning, why?"The defendant replied: "In case anyone tried to pull a knife out on me or try to hurt me."Mr Hussain said: "Did you want to start any trouble that day?"The boy said: "No."He told the court he did not want to hurt anyone on the day.Mr Hussain read a Snapchat message Harvey sent to the defendant before school that day, which said: "Is it beef I what [sic]", which the boy said he read as meaning: "Is it beef or what?"Asked if he wanted "beef" - a confrontation - with Harvey, the boy answered "no".
The defendant explained to the jury of eight women and four men how he met Harvey after arriving at school on 3 February and Harvey said to him: "Is it beef between me and you?"He said he asked Harvey why he thought he had "beef" with him but Harvey just asked him about his injured hand.The boy said they then started joking about boxing and started sparring in the corridor.The defendant said Harvey was laughing and he told the jury: "I was thinking it was alright between me and him."The jury has been shown CCTV footage of Harvey being stabbed in a courtyard at All Saints later that day.Addressing the jury last week, Mr Hussain said: "(The defendant) did not set out to kill or seriously hurt anyone."The defence say (the defendant's) actions that day were the end result of a long period of bullying, poor treatment and violence, things that built one upon another until he lost control and did tragically what we've all seen."The trial continues.

Notting Hill Carnival should be ticketed to avoid Hillsborough-scale disaster, Tories say
London's Notting Hill Carnival should become a ticketed event in order to avoid a deadly crowd crush on the scale of the Hillsborough disaster, politicians in the capital have claimed. A report by the City Hall Conservatives, the largest opposition party in the London Assembly, detailed mounting safety concerns at the carnival in West London, with the authors of the report suggesting the annual event should now be ticketed. Around 2 million people go to the Notting Hill Carnival, and it is policed by about 7,000 police officers. But over recent years it has become increasingly expensive to maintain safety, and the report suggests it is only by "chance" that a catastrophe on the scale of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, in which 97 people were killed in a crowd crush, has been avoided to date. According to the report, Sadiq Khan has increased City Hall's share of funding for Notting Hill Carnival by over 1,000% since he became mayor of London in 2016. The cost of policing the event in 2023 was £11.7m, but the report estimates the cost to the taxpayer will hit £16.5 million this year and total £80 million over the next five years. Meanwhile, total numbers of arrests have risen by 160% over the last 25 years. However the event has doubled in size during this period. The report concludes that the current event organisers "do not have the governance structure or the resources required" to organise an event on this scale, and it says "the occurrence of a major public safety disaster, such as a Hillsborough-style crush, has only been avoided by chance – not by effective organisation". Susan Hall, the leader of the City Hall Conservative group and author of the report said: "Notting Hill Carnival is a hugely important event and deserves to succeed – my report is designed to raise awareness of the serious safety issues the event faces in its current form, and put forward recommendations to give the event the security and stability it needs. "As my report shows, crime has increased substantially at the event since 2000, alongside a huge increase in the cost to the taxpayer. We must find another way – no other event would be allowed to continue like this. 'At a time when Londoners are facing cuts to essential and frontline policing services because of Sadiq Khan and this Labour government, the Met simply cannot afford to spend over £80 million policing Carnival over the next 5 years. A new permanent funding solution for Carnival would give the event the certainty it needs to run as successfully as possible.' The Independent has contacted organiser Notting Hill Carnival Ltd for comment. A spokesman for the organisation told The Times: 'Many of the points raised in this report have been addressed and actioned by NHCL and its strategic partners. An independent review commissioned by NHCL earlier this year has led to numerous changes this year and beyond.' A spokesperson for the Mayor of London told The Independent: 'The Notting Hill Carnival was born out of the Caribbean community in North Kensington and Notting Hill. It ultimately belongs to the community who decide where it is held and organise the event. 'The carnival is not organised by the Mayor, but he continues to work with partners to help ensure everyone can enjoy carnival safely and honour its cultural importance. 'Following an independent review of carnival, the Mayor stepped forward with partners to provide additional funding this year, however he believes that national funding will be needed to ensure the long-term safety and success of what is a nationally-significant event over the years ahead.'

Kent councillor Ricky Jones said he spoke in heat of the moment
A Labour councillor who called for far-right protesters' throats to be cut at a rally told police that his comments were made "in the heat of the moment", a court has were shown a video of Ricky Jones, 58, calling demonstrators "disgusting Nazi fascists" while addressing a crowd in Walthamstow on 7 August last Jones, who also said in the video "we need to get rid of them all", told police that his remarks were "ill-advised", Snaresbrook Crown Court Dartford councillor, who has since been suspended, denies encouraging violent disorder. The video, which later went viral on social media, showed Mr Jones addressing an anti-racism rally which the court heard was made up of "tens of thousands" of councillor, who at the time was also employed as a full-time official for the Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA) union, was arrested the day after he made the comments. 'Last minute' In a prepared statement submitted at the police station on his behalf, the councillor said his comments were not intended to be "taken literally by anyone" or to "encourage or incite" said he was referring "specifically" to an incident where a 'National Front Rights for Whites' sticker had been stuck on a train with a hidden razor blade behind it."This had made me very upset," he Jones said in the statement that his comments "were made in the heat of the moment" and that he was "extremely sorry".He added: "I was not invited to speak on microphone until the last minute and I had not planned or thought about what I was going to say in advance."Prosecutor Ben Holt told jurors on Monday that the councillor was "rabble rousing" a crowd in a "setting where violence could readily have been anticipated".The demonstration attended by Mr Jones took place in response to protests held following the murder of three children in Holt has claimed that Mr Jones was fully aware of the national climate at the time. 'Difficulties appeared mild' A medical report by experts from the prosecution and defence agreed that Mr Jones "suffers from a number of neurodivergent challenges", jurors were agreed facts read by Mr Holt stated: "The experts agree that these challenges may contribute to impulsive verbal responses in emotionally charged situations."These challenges can impair his ability to plan responses and inhibit inappropriate remarks. Female PE teacher denies sexually abusing two girls and a boy, but admits sending sexual communications to child under age of 16
A female PE teacher today denied having sex with children - but admitted having sexual communication with one child. Bronwen James appeared at a crown court and pleaded not guilty to sexually abusing two girls and a boy. The 29-year-old PE teacher is accused of having sex with the three children over a four-year period. However, James admitted one count of engaging in sexual communication with a girl under 16. James appeared for a plea hearing today at Salisbury Crown Court. She pleaded not guilty to a total of 11 offences. A trial date has been set for April 27 next year at Winchester Crown Court. Wiltshire Police previously said that James taught PE at Hardenhuish School in Chippenham and Bitterne Park School in Southampton. The teacher has been charged with 13 offences including three counts of sexual activity with a girl aged 13 to 15 James, who appeared in the dock wearing a cream waistcoat and matching trousers, spoke only to confirm her name, date of birth, and to enter her pleas. James pleaded not guilty to six offences of sexual activity with a child, relating to two girls under the age of 16. The former teacher, from Chippenham, also pleaded not guilty to four counts of sexual activity with a boy while in a position of trust. James pleaded guilty to engaging in sexual communication with a girl between 2019 and 2021. She denied another charge of engaging in sexual communication with another girl. The alleged offences took place between 2019 and 2023 in Titchfield and Fareham in Hampshire, as well as in Chippenham and in Alton, Staffordshire. James was granted conditional bail and is not allowed to contact the three alleged victims directly or indirectly or have unsupervised contact with any child under 16. Concluding the hearing, Judge Christopher Parker told her: 'Ms James, the trial in this case is going to take place at Winchester Crown Court on the 27th of April next year.' James has also been charged with making an indecent photograph of a child, namely a category C – which is the least serious category. She will enter her plea for this charge at a later date.
