Greece issues tsunami warning after strong earthquake
"A magnitude 5.9 earthquake occurred 48km [south-east] of Kasos. Risk of possible Tsunami in your area," the Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection posted on the 112 Greece account. "Move away from the coast immediately."
The tiny island of Kasos, which has a population of around 1,000, lies in the Aegean Sea between Crete and Rhodes.
Tremor also felt in Egypt
The quake was at a depth of 83 kilometers (52 miles), the German Research Centre for Geoscience (GFZ) said.
GFZ recorded the earthquake as being magnitude 6.3, according to AFP news agency, higher than that reported by the Greek authorities.
Tremors from the quake were felt as far away as Israel and southwestern Turkey.
People in Egypt also felt the quake with the country's National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics reporting a magnitude of 6.4 but no casualties or property damage.
Greece is located on a number of fault lines and is sporadically hit by earthquakes.
Between January 26 and February 13, more than 18,400 quakes, mainly of a low magnitude, were recorded off islands in the Cyclades archipelago, including the popular tourist island of Santorini, according to the University of Athens seismology laboratory.

The Mexican Navy called for residents to stay away from beaches on the Pacific and they believe waves between 30 centimeters and 1 meter in height are possible. Another Latin American country, Ecuador, said its famous Galapagos Islands could be hit by tidal waves. Tsunami waves hit California Waves from the tsunami have hit the coast off northern California. "The tsunami has reached the California Coast, and is showing up in the Arena Cove, CA tide gauge and is making its way down the coast right now," the National Weather Service Los Angeles account posted on X. Arena Cove is located in northern California above San Francisco. A tsunami advisory is in effect across the coastal areas of California.

Indian Consulate in San Francisco issues warning for tsunami threat post 8.8M quake
San Francisco: The Consulate General of India in San Francisco on Wednesday said that it was monitoring the potential tsunami threat following the 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. The advisory warned Indian nationals in coastal areas to abide by the directions issued during a tsunami threat. In a post on X, the Consulate said, "The Consulate General of India in San Francisco is monitoring the potential tsunami threat following the recent 8.7 magnitude earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. Indian nationals in California, other US West Coast states, and Hawaii are advised to take the following steps: Follow Local Alerts: Carefully monitor alerts from US authorities, including local emergency management and the US Tsunami Warning Centers. Move to higher ground if Tsunami Alert is issued. Avoid Coastal Areas. Prepare for Emergency & Keep devices charged. People are advised to stay away from the beach and not go to the coast, in the provinces affected by the advisory," as per Al Jazeera. A powerful magnitude 8.7 earthquake struck off Russia's far-east coast at 8:25 am local time on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said. Several people were injured in Russia's far east during the earthquake, the TASS state news agency reported, as per Al Jazeera. Japan reported that waves as high as 50 cm were recorded at Ishinomaki Port, a major port city in Miyagi Prefecture on the east coast. Elsewhere, the first tsunami waves measured 20 to 40 cm, but Japanese authorities say second and third waves could be larger, as reported by Al Jazeera. Local media warned earlier that tsunami waves are stronger than ordinary waves, and a 50 cm wave can carry a force of up to 200 kg. Tsunami warnings were also issued for Taiwan, the Philippines, Hawaii, Alaska's Aleutian Islands and some parts of Indonesia, with advisories issued for much of the US West Coast, Al Jazeera reported.
