Dominant Flamengo open with victory at Club World Cup

Goals either side of half time from Uruguayan international Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Luiz Araujo gave a dominant Flamengo -- coached by former Chelsea player Filipe Luis -- a deserved victory in the Group D clash in Philadelphia.
Flamengo, who qualified for the tournament as a recent winner of the Copa Libertadores, fielded a strong side featuring several Brazil internationals and gave a debut to Italy midfielder Jorginho following his recent arrival from Arsenal.
Jorginho will come up against former club Chelsea when the teams meet in their second match on Friday, with the Premier League club fresh from beating Los Angeles FC 2-0 earlier Monday.
De Arrascaeta opened the scoring for the Rio de Janeiro outfit in the 17th minute at Lincoln Financial Field when he finished first time from a Luiz Araujo assist.
That set off wild celebrations among the Flamengo fans, who made up the majority of the 25,797 crowd in a stadium which can hold close to 70,000.
Flamengo had chances to increase their lead while Tunisian champions Esperance created little of note before their Algerian winger Youcef Belaili almost equalised midway through the second half.
Shortly after that Flamengo scored again, as Luiz Araujo found a pocket of space in the box in the 70th minute, turned and curled a low shot into the far corner to make it 2-0.

Barcelona Inch Closer to Sign Nico Williams

Rana Atef On Tuesday, media reports indicated that Barcelona are inching closer to capturing Spain international and winger Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao. According to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, Barcelona are now the frontrunner to sign Williams, ahead of Bayern Munich, Arsenal, and Chelsea. He added that the Catalan club have held important negotiations over the last 24 hours. Plettenberg pointed out that Barcelona president Joan Laporta is currently evaluating the financial feasibility of the deal and whether the player can be registered within the squad, given the restrictions imposed by La Liga. According to the same source, the potential deal would be a five-year contract with an annual salary of 5 million euros, with Williams set to wear the number 17 shirt if he moves to Camp Nou. Plettenberg also confirmed that German coach Hansi Flick has made Williams one of his priorities and is pushing the club's management to complete the deal as soon as possible. read more Japan Stun Spain 2-1 to Qualify for World Cup Last 16 World Cup 2022: Get to Know Confirmed Line-ups of Japan and Spain Group E Decider Saudi Arabia Bid Farewell to World Cup after 2-1 Loss to Mexico Tunisia Achieve Historic Win over France but Fail to Qualify Tunisia to Clash against France in World Cup Sports Get to Know Squad of Group D Teams in World Cup Sports Al Ahly Gift EGP 70,000 to Players After Claiming Egyptian Super Cup Title Sports Bencharki Hits First 2 Goals with Al Jazira Since Leaving Zamalek Sports Arsenal Possible Line-up for Nottingham Forest News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean News 3 Killed in Shooting Attack in Thailand

Disgraced referee Coote charged by FA over Klopp remarks - World

Disgraced former Premier League referee David Coote was Tuesday charged by the Football Association over disparaging comments he made about ex-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp Coote, 42, was sacked in December by Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) after a video circulated on social media the previous month of him making derogatory remarks about Klopp and Liverpool in 2020. One of those remarks referenced Klopp's German nationality, and the FA said that constituted an alleged "aggravated breach" under its rules. The FA said Coote would face no further action in regard to separate allegations of gambling misconduct, which he had strenuously denied. The FA said those allegations had been fully investigated. A video showing Coote snorting white powder, reportedly during Euro 2024, emerged in November. Earlier this year European football's governing body UEFA banned Coote from any officiating activity until June 2026. In a January interview Coote came out as gay and said his struggle to hide his sexuality had contributed to bad choices. He said he was "truly sorry for any offence caused".
