Red Sox Reveal Plans for New 1B Nathaniel Lowe As Playoff Race Tightens

The Boston Red Sox are taking a low-risk gamble on first baseman Nathaniel Lowe.
First base has been a problem position for the Red Sox all year, so when Lowe became available to sign for the veteran minimum, having been designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals, it was something of a no-brainer.
After all, for as bad as Lowe was in Washington this year (.216/.297/.373 slash line in 119 games), he had a four-year stretch with the Texas Rangers where he was solidly above league average, even winning a Silver Slugger Award in 2022.

(Photo by)So as Lowe arrived in Boston on Monday with the Red Sox in the middle of a wild card race that is tightening by the moment, one had to wonder how much he'd be leaned on, given the divide between his career track record and the dismal season he's had.
Manager Alex Cora seemed to indicate that at least against right-handed pitchers, Lowe would be the Red Sox's new starter over the slumping Abraham Toro.
"He's a lefthanded hitter who's been there, done that," Cora said, per Sean McAdam of MassLive. "He was part of the Rangers when they won (the World Series). It's been an up-and-down season with the Nationals.
"Hopefully, he comes here and (takes advantage) of the wall, and what it means for lefties. He's excited to be here. We'll use him against righties, certain lefties, and pinch hit late. We'll maximize the roster."
Cora made good on that final promise on Monday night, as Lowe came in to pinch-hit in the ninth inning against Baltimore Orioles closer Yennier Cano. He drew a seven-pitch walk and scored on a Jarren Duran double, but Boston still lost 6-3.
Meanwhile, Toro is lucky just to still be on the roster, as the Red Sox put veteran outfielder Rob Refsnyder on the injured list to clear space for Lowe on Monday, when the alternative was likely designating Toro for assignment.
Boston has lost their last two games to sub-.500 teams, and they need to start stacking wins as soon as possible. With a righty on the mound for Baltimore on Tuesday, can Lowe make his presence felt quickly?

Red Sox Discussing Massive Move to Send All-Star Starter to Bullpen: Report
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Red Sox, who kicked off a critical four-game series with their archrival New York Yankees with postseason implications Thursday, are discussing moving a two-time All-Star starter to their bullpen. According to Chris Cotillo of Walker Buehler is not guaranteed to make his next scheduled start Monday in Baltimore. More news: Red Sox to Promote Top Prospect After Scorching Start at Triple-A: Report It would be Buehler's second start against the Orioles in less than a week, a tough task for any pitcher. Although Baseball Reference pegged Boston's odds of making the postseason at 88 percent Thursday morning, that could easily change by Monday. And manager Alex Cora might be wise to reconsider the best role for Buehler, who's 7-7 with a 5.40 ERA in his first season since signing a one-year, $21.05 million contract with the Red Sox last winter — at least temporarily. Ahead of Little League World Series championship game, team spirit is soaring in Fairfield, Conn.
Fairfield, Connecticut, Little Leaguers scored a big win Wednesday in the Little League World Series when they beat Nevada 7-3. The boys are advancing to the U.S. world championship round this weekend, and fans in the community are eager to watch and cheer on their very own. The team checked every box Wednesday - pitching, defense and timely hitting. "The experience is wonderful. I never thought we could. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience," said 12-year-old catcher Jimmy Taxiltaridis. The rising 7th grader called it a dream come true. The Fairfield team is advancing to a winner-take-all game for the crown of best team in the U.S. The team has played together since they were 8. "In the back of our minds, we knew this group was special for years," head coach Brian Palazzolo said. "We won the Connecticut state title three years in a row. We're undefeated in Connecticut." Hundreds gathered in Fairfield to watch their games and cheer them on - they probably could have been heard by the team all the way in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Elicit Brewing Company has been hosting watch parties and fundraisers for the Little Leaguers. "It feels very - neighborhood, community coming together. The energy is reminiscent of when UConn won the championship. We have this whole place just come alive," Sean Klingler of Elicit Brewing Co. said. "We plan to invite them out once everything's all said and done," Elicit Brewing Co.'s Mary O'Berry said. "It's been absolutely wonderful that it's kid first, kid focused." Emily Chizmadia works as a school social worker and has worked closely with three of the players. "It's definitely a great group of kids that they have on that team," she said. "Keep trying your best no matter what, you made it this far." The boys have had an aggressive schedule, including three-hour practices seven days a week, but there isn't exactly a secret ingredient to what makes the team work so well. There is a ritual, however, that helps them. "Before every game, we always do a dance circle just to get the butterflies out of your stomach. It's just about fun. It's a lot of fun," Taxiltaridis said. Elicit Brewing Co. is holding another viewing party this Saturday for the boys' next game - the U.S. championship.

San Diego tied it in the fourth on Machado's RBI single and Xander Bogaerts' sacrifice fly.
