Exercise in optics, smoke-and-mirror tactics move to mislead people: Punjab Congress

Indian Express24-05-2025
The Congress in Punjab Friday slammed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) after the arrest of ruling party MLA Raman Arora, calling it another elaborate 'optics exercise' aimed at misleading the people of Punjab.
The Vigilance Bureau arrested AAP MLA from Jalandhar Central for allegedly indulging in corruption in connivance with an official of the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation.
Following Arora's arrest, Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Partap Singh Bajwa accused the AAP-led Punjab government of being knee-deep in corruption while attempting to save face with hollow gestures.
'This is nothing more than a desperate attempt to revive the party's plummeting image,' Bajwa said.
'After trying to hoodwink the public with gimmicks like 'Shiksha Kranti' and 'Yudh Nasheyan Virudh', Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is now attempting to portray himself as a crusader against corruption.
But the truth is, no meaningful action will ever follow and no one will actually be convicted,' Bajwa said in a statement.
About Arora's arrest, Bajwa noted that this is not an isolated incident.
'This isn't the first time AAP MLAs and ministers have been named in corruption and extortion cases. Rather than pursuing legal action, the AAP government has routinely buried such cases to protect its own,' he alleged.
Taking a dig at AAP's public posturing, Bajwa questioned, 'If the party had prior knowledge of Raman Arora's alleged misdeeds, why was no action taken before? This so-called 'Kattar Imaandaar' party is anything but honest. It's all a facade designed to deceive voters.'
The senior Congress leader pointed out that this latest move is just another failed attempt by AAP to project itself as a clean and accountable party.
'Since coming to power in 2022, CM Mann's government has failed to act decisively even in cases where allegations were clear. Take the case of former health minister Vijay Singla, accused of corruption — no action has been taken and he remains active in party affairs,' Bajwa said, claiming that many other Punjab AAP leaders have faced serious allegations.
'Yet, the AAP government's so-called zero-tolerance stance against corruption has remained just a slogan,' he alleged.
'AAP continues to resort to smoke-and-mirror tactics to cover up its failures and shield its own. The people of Punjab deserve real accountability, not political theatre,' Bajwa said.
Congress MLA from Bholath, Sukhpal Singh Khaira, termed Arora's arrest a 'blatant eyewash' and a 'political gimmick', 'orchestrated' by the Mann-led AAP government 'to mislead the public ahead of the upcoming Ludhiana West byelection'.
Khaira drew parallels to the arrest of former minister Vijay Singla ahead of the Sangrur Lok Sabha byelection in 2022, pointing out that despite serious corruption charges, no charge-sheet was ever filed against him.
'Dr Vijay Singla continues to enjoy the full patronage of AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal and the party, proving that such arrests are mere stunts to create a false narrative of accountability,' Khaira alleged in a statement.
'The arrest of Raman Arora is a repeat of the same script played out before the Sangrur byelection. The AAP government is desperate to divert attention from its failures and rampant corruption within its ranks. Punjabis are not fooled by these tactics,' Khaira said, urging the public to see through the 'political drama' and hold the AAP accountable 'for its betrayal of the common man's trust'.

Delhi govt. puts brakes on fuel ban for overage vehicles amid outcry

The Delhi government will work to clean the city's air but will not allow the impounding of 'end of life' vehicles (ELVs), Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said, citing public backlash and systemic challenges in enforcing the anti-pollution measure. Mr. Sirsa said he had written to the Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM), urging a pause on its directive that mandated fuel stations to deny petrol or diesel to ELVs from July 1 and allowed their impounding using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras. 'We will clean Delhi's environment, but we will not allow Delhiites' vehicles to be impounded. This is the resolution of our Chief Minister Rekha Guptaji – her promise to the people,' he told reporters. Ms. Gupta said the government would make 'all efforts' to address problems related to the ELV ban. 'The pain of Delhi people is understandable... Some are emotionally attached to vehicles gifted by loved ones, and such less-driven cars are keepsakes,' she said. An official from Mr. Sirsa's office confirmed that ANPR-based enforcement at fuel stations would not be implemented from Friday, though the government has not issued a formal order. In his letter to the CAQM, the Minister cited technological integration issues, lack of coordination with neighbouring States, and public discontent. He said the government is considering enforcement based on actual emissions, rather than vehicle age alone. The CAQM's April 23 directive had ordered that from July 1, ELVs identified via ANPR at Delhi fuel stations be denied fuel. The same rule was to take effect in five NCR districts from November 1 and across the rest of NCR from April 1, 2026. Initially, the Delhi government supported the move, with the Transport Department and traffic police impounding ELVs from fuel stations. Mr. Sirsa had announced in March that ELVs would be barred from refuelling from April 1, but the plan was delayed due to incomplete ANPR installation. Even before CAQM's July mandate, the Transport Department had been impounding ELVs spotted on the roads. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) claimed public opposition forced the government's U-turn. 'The BJP government was simply hiding behind a court order. But when the people united and raised their voice, it had to withdraw,' said AAP's Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj. Mr. Sirsa, meanwhile, alleged that the AAP government took money from new car dealers and installed ANPR cameras to target older vehicles. According to CAQM data, Delhi has nearly 62 lakh ELVs, while the rest of NCR has about 44 lakh. The National Green Tribunal banned ELVs across the NCR in 2015. Ms. Gupta announced that the Supreme Court had accepted the government's petition. In the National Capital Region (NCR), no immediate punitive action will be taken against owners of diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years, she said. 'We will continue to firmly represent the interests of the people of Delhi by actively participating in the judicial process... This decision strengthens our resolve to maintain a balance between environmental protection and public convenience as we move towards a developed Delhi,' Ms. Gupta said in a statement.

'Nation in safe hands': Ahmed Patel's son Faisal Patel hails PM for Operation Sindoor; calls Narendra Modi, Amit Shah 'great leaders'

Late Congress stalwart Ahmed Patel's son Faisal Patel. (ANI) NEW DELHI : In remarks likely to raise eyebrows in the Congress, Faisal Patel -- son of the late party stalwart Ahmed Patel — has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership during Operation Sindoor , the cross-border strike on terror camps in Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians. 'It can't be better than who's running the show… The armed forces have done a great job, and PM Narendra Modi showed great leadership and brought us out of a huge crisis. I am proud of our armed forces. I have a lot of respect for Jaishankarji. How Modiji picks up bureaucrats, makes them leaders and puts them in ministry roles is a very good thing,' Patel told news agency ANI. In an interview to CNNNews18, he called Modi and home minister Amit Shah 'great leaders' and declared the country was 'in safe hands' — a remark loaded with political irony given Ahmed Patel's long rivalry with Modi during UPA years, when he was Sonia Gandhi's most trusted strategist. Shameful is your deceit: Israeli envoy jabs Priyanka Gandhi over genocide claim

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has launched a scathing attack on Israel over its war on Palestinian group Hamas, accusing the Jewish nation of committing genocide in Gaza. Her claims drew a sharp rebuttal from Israel's ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, who said not to "buy Hamas numbers".Vadra, the MP from Kerala's Wayanad, alleged on Tuesday that Israel killed over 60,000 people, including children, and starved "hundreds to death". She accused the Narendra Modi-led central government of being "silent" over what she called "genocide" by Israel. advertisement"The Israeli state is committing genocide. It has murdered over 60,000 people, 18,430 of whom were children. It has starved hundreds to death, including many children, and is threatening to starve millions. Enabling these crimes by silence and inaction is a crime in itself. It is shameful that the Indian government stands silent as Israel unleashes this devastation on the people of Palestine," she tweeted. In response, Azar hit out at Vadra and said that "what is shameful is your deceit". He said that Israel killed 25,000 Hamas terrorists and highlighted the country's humanitarian response to Gaza. Blaming Hamas for creating hindrances in humanitarian aid supplies to Gaza, the envoy said, "The terrible cost in human lives derives from Hamas's heinous tactics of hiding behind civilians, their shooting of people trying to evacuate or receive assistance and their rocket fire. Israel facilitated two million tonnes of food into Gaza while Hamas tries to sequestrate them, thereby creating hunger.""What is shameful is your deceit. Israel killed 25,000 Hamas terrorists... Gaza population has grown 450 per cent in the last 50 years, no genocide there. Don't buy Hamas numbers," he said while rejecting Vadra's a separate post earlier, the Congress MP condemned the killings of five Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza and accused Israel of "breaking" the truth through "violence and hatred". "The cold-blooded murder of five Al Jazeera journalists is yet another heinous crime committed on Palestinian soil. The immeasurable courage of those who dare to stand for the truth will never be broken by the violence and hatred of the Israeli state. In a world where much of the media is enslaved to power and commerce, these brave souls reminded us of what true journalism is," she wrote on exchange between Vadra and the Israeli ambassador came days after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country will launch a new offensive to dismantle Hamas strongholds in Gaza, where a hunger crisis is escalating after 22 months of war in Gaza was triggered on October 7, 2023, when Hamas terrorists attacked Israel, killing around 1,200 and taking about 250 hostages. Israel's subsequent military assault on Hamas in Gaza has killed over 60,000 people and displaced nearly the whole population, causing a severe hunger Monday, the UN said there were significant delays and obstructions in coordinating with humanitarian missions in Gaza. It also said that Israeli security clearances were wasting "precious time" over critical aid delivery."On Monday, we requested to coordinate with the Israeli security service's 16 missions, including the collection of food, medical supplies, and fuel from the two operational crossings, Kareem Shalom and Zikim," UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric was quoted by Al Jazeera as saying.- Ends(with inputs from Reuters)Must Watch IN THIS STORY#Israel#Gaza Strip
