Andhra Pradesh is a role model for other States in implementation of social welfare schemes, says Rajam MLA
Rajam MLA Kondru Murali Mohan from the Telugu Desam Party(TD) on Saturday said that Andhra Pradesh had become a role model for other States with effective implementation of social welfare schemes, including distribution of pensions for elderly people, physically challenged, widows and others. He distributed pensions to eligible persons at V.R. Agraharam in Rajam mandal on Saturday. Mr. Murali Mohan said that the Chandrababu Naidu government was very prompt in distribution of pensions in spite of financial problems.
'Enhancement of pension amount from ₹4,000 from ₹3,000 is a remarkable achievement for the government since no other State in the country dared to take up the welfare measure. The government will credit ₹20,000 in the accounts of farmers very soon and free bus facility will be implemented from August 15. These steps are part of implementation of Super-Six schemes,' said Mr. Murali Mohan.
Responding to petitions of locals, he promised to take up road repairs and lay new roads in various parts of Rajam constituency after completing the budget assessment by the departments concerned in the constituency.

SRN hosp to install advance machine for cancer treatment
Prayagraj: Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital, under the Prime Minister's Health Protection Scheme (PMSSY), is set to install an HDR Brachytherapy machine for cancer treatment in the coming months. The project, initially proposed in 2016 as part of a Super Speciality Block, was temporarily shelved due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which redirected all available resources and infrastructure. According to the media in charge of SRN, Dr Santosh Kumar Singh, the medical college will soon procure the machine because the most crucial component—an underground shielded bunker required for its installation—has not been constructed. The layout is now ready, and work on the radiation-safe bunker has been initiated following communication with the state govt. Detailing what Brachytherapy is, Dr Singh said, "Brachytherapy is a highly focused type of internal radiation therapy used for cancers like cervical, prostate, breast and skin cancers. It involves placing a radioactive source directly inside or next to the tumour, thereby delivering a high dose of radiation to the cancer with minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissues." Unlike external beam radiation therapy (EBRT), brachytherapy ensures that the rest of the body is exposed to very little radiation, making it an effective and safe treatment modality. According to experts, "This form of radiation therapy is extremely useful for localised tumours, and once the machine is installed, it will benefit cancer patients across the region." Initially, in 2016, plans were approved to install this machine under PMSSY. By 2019, the Super Speciality Block was completed, but in 2020, during the peak of COVID-19, the building was repurposed into a dedicated COVID ward, postponing all other medical projects. "As of 2025, groundwork for bunker construction has restarted, and layout approvals are in place. Soon we will procure the machine, and the patients here at SRN will be able to get the state-of-the-art facility," said Dr Santosh, who is also the Associate Professor at MLN Medical College.

Concerns rise over massive yoga day event amidst surge in COVID-19 cases
As the State gears up for Yogandhra-2025, marking International Yoga Day on June 21, concerns are being raised about the timing of the mega event in view of the rising Covid-19 cases. The massive event proposed to be held on a 20-km stretch along the Beach Road in Visakhapatnam, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to attend, is expected to draw over 5 lakh participants. The State government has also announced plans to mobilise thousands of participants for the event. While the current rise in COVID-19 cases is not considered alarming, health experts warn that mass gatherings without proper precautions like wearing masks, maintaining physical distance between participants, and lack of hygiene could lead to a spike in cases. A doctor said: 'Though the present strains of the virus, which are variants of omicron, are not causing severe illness or death, one cannot rule out the long-term effects of the virus. Patients may develop health issues at a later stage in their life.' Recently, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) three-day 'Mahanadu' meeting in Kadapa saw thousands of party leaders and workers attend the event without wearing masks. Ironically, the State government had earlier issued an advisory asking people not to participate in large gatherings, religious congregations, and party meetings. However, it withdrew the advisory ahead of the Mahanadu. Praja Arogya Vedika (PAV) general secretary T. Kameswara Rao and its president MV Ramaniah expressed concern over the planned mega Yoga Day event on June 21. In a letter to Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday, they warned that mobilising 2 lakh participants across 20-km, poses a risk of becoming a COVID-19 'super-spreader event', especially given the rise of active cases in Visakhapatnam and across the country. Dr. K. Rambabu, Director of Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS), told The Hindu: 'Most people have developed herd immunity either due to previous infection or vaccination. The chance of infection is low. However, those with co-morbid conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and kidney disease should take extra precautions.' He added that yoga is unlikely to pose a risk as participants would be performing asanas on mats at a safe distance.'
