‘Do you want me to send a child out of the stadium?': Emma Raducanu argues with umpire over crying child

Indian Express2 days ago
The third-round match between women's world no 1 Aryna Sabalenka and British No 1 Emma Raducanu witnessed some dramatic scenes when Raducanu was so hassled by a noisy fan that she beseeched the chair umpire to eject the noisemaker. There was only one hilarious problem with the request: the source of the noise was a crying toddler.
Media reports of the game noted that Raducanu was first distracted — and then angered — by the constant wailing of the child from the stands and consequently tried to tell the chair umpire to act and shut out the noise. The incident happened during the eighth game in the deciding set, when the British tennis ace was preparing to serve.
It was a request that the chair umpire was not too keen to heed.
'It's been like 10 minutes,' Raducanu can be heard complaining to the umpire in a video that's now gone viral.
'It's a child, do you want me to send a child out of the stadium?' the chair umpire snapped back.
At this, plenty of fans can be heard agreeing as Raducanu points at them as if to say that the request is justified.

The 22-year-old eventually lost to the battle to Sabalenka by a 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 7-6 (7-5) scoreline.
It must be noted that the crying child was not the only loud noise emanating from the stands.
The BBC noted that the British tennis player was guided throughout the match by her new coach Francisco Roig. At one point, he was heard telling the British player, 'You're better than her.' The BBC report also noted that Roig, who helped Rafael Nadal claim a majority of his 22 Grand Slam titles, offered insights throughout the match about the pattern of Raducanu's serve and the shape of her forehand.

Coco Gauff reaches last eight at Cincinnati Open

Ohio (USA), Aug 14 (UNI) World number two Coco Gauff beat Lucia Bronzetti 6-2 6-4 to book her place in the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Open. The two players had progressed to the last 16 in contrasting ways, with Gauff having won her only match in straight sets before a walkover against Dayana Yastremska in last round. Bronzetti, on the other hand, had come through in three sets in her previous three rounds and the world number 61 quickly found herself 3-0 down. Gauff was broken in the fifth game but it proved a brief blip as she went on to win the opening set in 33 minutes. The American went 2-0 up in the second set but suffered another lapse when she was broken to love by the Italian in the third game. Bronzetti raised her game and had a break point at 2-2, only to send a backhand return long as Gauff managed to hold. The second set was a more competitive affair but Bronzetti double-faulted twice when serving to stay in the match and Gauff went on to break and secure victory. "For the most part I played aggressive," said Gauff, who won the Cincinnati Open in 2023 before going on to win the US Open that year. "Maybe there were a couple that were a little bit passive in some of those games but it's tough - the balls are super light and she wasn't giving me much pace. "I was just trying to play controlled but also aggressive and, for the most part, I think I did well." Gauff will play the winner of the match between Italian Jasmine Paolini and Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic in the next round, according to a BBC news UNI BM

Gauff cruises into Cincinnati quarter-final with Paolini

Coco Gauff eased past Lucia Bronzetti on Thursday to book a Cincinnati Open quarter-final meeting with Jasmine Paolini, although the American showed signs of some minor rust after receiving a bye in the previous round. HT Image Gauff had got a free pass into the last 16 when intended opponent Dayana Yastremska withdrew before the start with injury. But the 21-year-old put her relative lack of time on the court behind her as she won through 6-2, 6-4 against Bronzetti to reach the last eight, despite suffering early breaks of serve in both sets. Gauff will be playing her third 1000-level quarter-final of the season after Madrid and Rome -- both of which she went on to reach the final. She will next meet the player who downed her in the Rome final, after Paolini brushed aside two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova 6-1, 6-2 in the day's second match on center court. Gauff said after defeating Bronzetti that memories of her 2023 title success at Cincinnati come to the surface whenever she is in the tournament's showpiece arena. "It's super special to play on this court, I have so many memories from 2023. "I played controlled but aggressive, but sometimes I was a bit passive. It's tough because the ball really flies and she was giving me no pace. "I had chances (when she lost serve) but I missed a couple of balls. I was still able to close it out." Italy's Paolini needed just over 70 minutes to see off Krejcikova, with the Czech player seemingly struggling with her movement. "I think she wasn't at 100 percent, but she's an unbelievable player," said the seventh seed. "She can put the ball wherever she wants every time, I don't know how she does this. But I'm happy that I tried to stay there mentally until the last point." Gauff and Paolini have met four times in the past, sharing two victories apiece. However, 2023 US Open champion Gauff has the edge over Paolini on hard court. Her last victory over the Italian came at the last-eight stage on her way to victory in Cincinnati two years ago. str/nf/ea
