Ashanti Reacts to Viral 'Scoot' Dance Move, Reveals Reason Behind the Choreography (Exclusive)

Ashanti is reflecting on her 'hilarious' dance move that has been etched in the internet's history.
Back in 2014, Ashanti, 44, appeared on The Queen Latifah Show to promote her Braveheart album, which was released that same year. The R&B songstress performed her club-ready single 'I Got It,' an innuendo-laced tune paired with equally sensual choreography. Flanked by two background dancers, Ashanti moved things to the floor and proceeded to scoot as the performance came to a close.
In an exclusive chat with PEOPLE about her current ventures, the 'Good Good' singer, 44, shares her reaction to the piece of choreography that has spread across the internet over the years.
'It is so hilarious to me and it's one of those little memes,' Ashanti tells PEOPLE over Zoom, before a recent taping of The Tamron Hall Show. 'Like when you put it in on your phone, if you put in 'Ashanti', the scoot [move] comes up. I'm like, 'are you kidding me?' It's hilarious!'

Like Ashanti mentions, a gif of the scooting motion is readily available in the designated gif catalog in iMessage on Apple devices. This is a testament to the internet's frequent use of the viral performance.
While everyone can't handle the scrutiny (albeit light) of the internet, the New York-born artist takes it in stride, even referencing New York Liberty mascot Ellie the Elephant's homage in a TikTok posted to the popular mascot's account in July 2024.
'What's the [mascot] from [the New York] Liberty?,' Ashanti asks, earnestly. Once her manager jogs her memory, the 'Baby' singer giggles, finishing with a simple 'Shout out to Ellie.'
Before moving on, she reveals the reason why the move was incorporated into the choreography.
'When I shot the video, my ankle was broken,' Ashanti says. 'So we just did the choreography from that [for the live performance.]'

These days, life couldn't be busier for Ashanti.
Following the birth of her son Kareem Kenkaide last July - whom she shares with rapper Nelly, 50 - the first-time mother is diving back into her artistic endeavors. Last month, Ashanti starred in and served as the executive producer for the gritty drama No Address, shining a light on the growing issue of homelessness in the U.S.

Next month, Ashanti is slated to release her new single 'Called You Up' in addition to embarking upon the Bring It Tour. Beginning April 8 in Dublin, Ireland, the 'Foolish' singer will trek across Europe with Sean Paul and Fat Joe and perform her bevy of hits.
'It's going to be my first time going as a mom,' Ashanti notes. 'My creative director is kind of going in and just... I don't want to say completely wiping, but definitely upgrading [my set], doing some new stuff. So I'm excited about that new staging. And obviously we'll be over in Europe, so it's going to be a good vibe, man. I'm excited!'

Kelly Clarkson's Ex Brandon Blackstock Learned He Was Going to Be a Grandpa Again Weeks Before Death

Brandon Blackstock found out his family was expanding prior to his tragic death. The late talent manager's eldest daughter, Savannah, revealed she was pregnant with her second child via an Instagram announcement on July 5, according to People. The baby — a little girl who is due in January 2026 — would have made Blackstock a grandfather for the second time, as Savannah already shares 3-year-old son Lake with her husband, Quentin Lee. 'We've been keeping a couple sweet surprises,' Savannah wrote on the platform, per People. 'One little girl will be making her arrival at the beginning of January and another beautiful girl named Julianna who has already been one of the greatest blessings to our family.' Savannah also gave credit to the lord for her pregnancy in her post. 'He's written a story we never could've imagined, and His kindness in this season has left us in awe,' she gushed. 'He's answered prayers we never even knew how to pray. This journey has been so special full of peace, excitement, and so much grace. We're growing again, and our hearts are so full. Thank you, Jesus.' In addition to Savannah, Blackstock shares son Seth with his first wife, Melissa Ashworth, whom he was married to from 2001 to 2012. He was also a dad to kids River, 11, and Remington, 9, whom he shares with his second wife, Kelly Clarkson. The couple tied the knot in 2013, separated in 2020, and finalized their divorce in 2022. Blackstock passed away on Thursday, August 7, after a lengthy battle with melanoma. He was 48 years old.

Widow has late husband's tattoo cut from his corpse, framed as a ‘cool' tribute: ‘It does so much more than a picture'

Instead of wearing her heart on her sleeve, she got her husband's sleeve framed. When Angelica Radevski lost her spouse unexpectedly earlier this year, the West Virginia nurse and mother-of-one made a bold decision that has stunned millions online — she preserved and framed a piece of his tattooed skin. Angelica, 35, and her husband TJ had been lifelong friends before marrying in 2021 and raising their 10-year-old son, Preston. 3 Angelica Radevski's husband and lifelong friend TJ passed away unexpectedly earlier this year. facebook/ In March, after TJ died suddenly at age 55, Angelica didn't want a traditional keepsake. Instead, she wanted to frame her husband's skin to show off her son's favorite tattoo. 'I knew we were going to do this because we had talked about it before,' Angelica said in a now-viral TikTok video. Of the more than 70 tatts TJ had inked over his body, they chose to preserve his Pittsburgh Steelers helmet design — complete with skull imagery and finished off in his beloved team's black and gold colors. It was his first sleeve tattoo, and a favorite of his and their son's. Preston was the one who ultimately made the final call. 'This is Dad,' he told his mother. 3 After TJ died suddenly at 55 on March 21, Angelica didn't want a traditional keepsake; she wanted to frame her husband's skin showing off her son's favorite tattoo. facebook/ After the funeral, Angelica used a marker to outline the exact tattoo they wanted to preserve on TJ's right arm. A mortician then carefully removed the skin, placed it in a special preservation kit provided by the Ohio-based company Save My Ink Forever, and sent it off before TJ's body was cremated. The preservation process took around 90 days. When the company returned the framed tattoo — encased in glass and set in a dark wooden frame — the moment was overwhelming. 'When he handed it to us, I was shocked,' Angelica told People. 'And it was a good shock — so many things you didn't know you were missing instantly felt better.' 3 Of the more than 70 tattoos TJ had inked over his body, they chose to preserve his Pittsburgh Steelers helmet design — complete with skull imagery and his beloved team's black and gold colors. facebook/ The tattoo still held TJ's skin texture, the fine details of his wrinkles, even stray hairs. 'This isn't a replica. You can see his hair, his wrinkles, the ink I kissed goodnight,' Angelica wrote on TikTok. Angelica and her son say the piece gives them a profound physical and emotional connection they couldn't get from an urn. Angelica has since shared her journey of loss and preservation on TikTok, where her video about the tattoo has amassed nearly 30 million views. Viewers have been divided. While many expressed admiration and support, others compared her decision to something out of a horror story — even comparing her to serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. But Angelica isn't fazed. 'Just because it's not what you want, you don't have to make me feel bad about it,' she told People. 'We feel him here a lot, spiritually and energetically,' she continued. 'But this is that piece that we really, really needed. When we want to know he's here, we can hold the frame, and it does so much more than a picture.' The widow also hopes her story helps others plan for the unthinkable. Without life insurance, her family faced immense financial pressure after TJ's passing. Now, she uses her platform to advocate for open conversations about death and end-of-life wishes. 'Instead of planning for a wedding for a year, why don't we start planning and making it normal and not so ugly to talk about death,' she suggested. 'You can be prepared — both financially and with what you want for your body.'
