Ex-Colombian Prez Álvaro Uribe sentenced to 12 years of house arrest
The 73-year-old former president had pleaded not guilty. His defence attorney previously announced that they would file an appeal, reports CNN.
Judge Sandra Heredia of Bogotá's 44th Criminal Court announced the sentence on Friday, four days after she found the former president guilty of the crimes. Heredia had acquitted Uribe of another charge for alleged bribery of a prosecutor.
Uribe, who governed Colombia from 2002 to 2010, is the country's first former president to be criminally convicted.
The case began in 2012, when Uribe, of the now-opposition Centro Democrático party, accused Senator Iván Cepeda, of the ruling Historic Pact, of trying to link him to the creation of a paramilitary group. Cepeda has denied the accusations.
The situation took a turn in 2018, when the Colombian Supreme Court decided to open an investigation against Uribe for alleged witness tampering.
After years of investigations and legal appeals by Uribe's defence, in May 2024, the Colombian Prosecutor's Office formally charged him with three crimes: procedural fraud, bribery in criminal proceedings and bribery.
The accusation led to a trial that lasted 67 days and concluded this week.
Uribe maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings, a position supported by politicians such as former president Iván Duque and other opposition politicians.
In contrast, figures close to the government celebrated the ruling, which they considered a sign of justice.

The BBC reported that all charges against De Wet will be dropped if the court accepts his testimony in the case that has stoked fury in a country rife with racial tensions. Prosecutors said the two black women were shot dead for alleged trespassing. The men appeared at the Limpopo Polokwane High Court, a regional spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa (NPA) told CNN. Earlier, the NPA said the trio 'are facing two counts of murder, attempted murder, three counts of defeating the ends of justice, and possession of firearms and ammunition". Police said the other employee, Musoro, is 'an illegal immigrant", who has been additionally charged with 'contravening sections of the illegal immigration act". They were not asked to enter a plea before the hearing was moved to August 7, NPA spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi was quoted by CNN. WHAT IS THE CASE? The police said on August 20, 2024, the decomposed bodies of two black women were discovered 'in a pigsty on a farm in Sebayeng, outside Mankweng" following which the three men were arrested. 'The investigation began when a 45-year-old South African woman went missing after visiting the farm on 17 August (2024), accompanied by a 35-year-old foreign national woman," police said. 'Both women sustained gunshot wounds, and a 47-year-old foreign national man, who was with them escaped but was also shot and hospitalised." The survivor then told reporters that one of the murdered women was his wife and the other was their neighbour. They had entered the farm to collect expired and abandoned dairy products, he said. ICE under fire! South Korean student jailed after routine visa meeting
Yeonsoo Go, a South Korean student, was detained by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents following a routine visit hearing at Federal Plaza Immigration Court in New York, according to media reports. Philippines to give visa-free entry to Indian tourists
