Waqf tribunal being established in Madurai, says T.N. Minister
The Tamil Nadu government is taking steps to establish a Waqf tribunal in Madurai for the benefit of those in the southern districts of the State, Minister for Minorities and Non-Resident Tamils Welfare S.M. Nasar said in the Assembly on Tuesday (April 22, 2025).
A G.O. was issued in March this year to create 13 posts in the Waqf tribunal in Madurai, the Minister said during the Question Hour in the House, replying to a query by Papanasam MLA M.H. Jawahirullah.
As for Mr. Jawahirullah's request for setting up tribunals in Coimbatore and Tiruchi, the Minister said that if it was found to be a necessity, the Chief Minister would be consulted in this regard.
The Tamil Nadu government constituted Tamil Nadu Waqf Tribunal in 2018 for the determination of any disputes relating to Waqf or Waqf properties, as per Section 83 of the Waqf Act, 1995.
The tribunal consists of a district judge as chairman, an officer from the State Civil Services, equivalent in rank to that of the Additional District Magistrate, as a member, and one person with knowledge in Muslim law and jurisprudence as another member.
To another query by Mr. Jawahirullah, whether the State government would come forward to issue pattas to dargahs, mosques, and madrasaas on Waqf properties, the Minister said that the Revenue Secretary has sought for comments from the Commissioner of Land Administration and the Director of Survey and Settlement in this regard.
Mr. Jawahirullah also requested for a long-term lease for Waqf properties that have been lying unused, so that educational institutions or hospitals could be established there. Though the Board could provide lease for only three years, the government could issue long-term leases, he pointed out.
The Minister said: 'If applications seeking long-term leases of Waqf properties were made, they would be considered, and based on their eligibility, long-term leases would be granted under relevant rules. The issue would be brought to the notice of the Chief Minister and he would be consulted for further action.'

We were there to explain India's 'new normal': Jay Panda on global outreach campaign
BJP MP Jay Panda, who headed the global outreach delegations on Operation Sindoor which visited Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Algeria, talked about the message they sent across and how it was received by the countries. When asked about what was your message to strategic partners like Saudi Arabia and how was your message received by other Islamic countries through this visit since Pakistan continues to play the Muslim card? Jay Panda said, "Our message was very clear. Our message is that we've gone through this same cycle of terrorism for 78 years. Pakistan sending cross-border terrorists and the whole cycle, the whole rigmarole, provoking attacks and nuclear blackmail. And so we were there to explain the new normal, new India's new normal, which is that we will retaliate and we will specifically target terrorist bases."

Caste census will benefit indigenous Muslims, says CM
Guwahati: Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said the indigenous Muslim population of the state, residing in the Brahmaputra and the Barak Valley regions, would significantly benefit from the caste census. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The centre on Wednesday announced that nation's 16th population census, incorporating caste enumeration, would be implemented in 2027. Speaking on the side lines of World Environment Day event, the chief minister said Assam's indigenous Muslim communities have consistently requested a caste-based census to establish their unique socio-cultural identities. "The proposed caste enumeration in the upcoming national census is expected to fulfil their decades-old aspiration for formal recognition of their independent identity — distinct from broader religious classifications and migratory groupings," he added. Sarma said communities, including the Goria, Moria, Deshi, Syed, and Jolha (Julha) Muslims of the Brahmaputra Valley, and the Kiren and Maimal Muslims of the Barak Valley, consistently maintain that while Islam is their faith, they possess distinctive ethnic, linguistic and cultural characteristics separating them from non-indigenous Muslim populations. The CM indicated last month that Assam govt had begun preliminary steps towards conducting a comprehensive caste census to document and identify the state's indigenous Muslim communities. These communities have maintained unique traditions, dialects, and historical accounts that are intrinsically connected to Assam's heritage and cultural identity.

According to sources, Shah held a closed-door session with Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and BJP state president Sukanta meeting, lasting over two hours, was centred around fine-tuning the party's roadmap for the high-stakes 294-seat assembly battle, with 148 seats required for a simple majority, sources the meeting, Adhikari submitted a comprehensive report on the BJP's organisational standing across Bengal. Discussions revolved around vote share calculations and electoral arithmetic, with Adhikari reportedly informing Shah that the BJP trails the ruling Trinamool Congress by around 4-5 percent in over 150 seats, based on trends observed between the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha polls. With the BJP holding a steady 40 percent voter share statewide, Adhikari argued that a swing of just 3-4 percent could enable the party to outpace the TMC in these key constituencies and form the next government.A significant portion of the strategy focusses on strengthening booth-level organisation. West Bengal has close to 80,000 polling booths, of which 14,000 are Muslim-majority areas where the BJP does not currently plan to set up booth the party is concentrating efforts on building robust teams in approximately 57,000 other booths, despite concerns over what leaders describe as an "atmosphere of terror" in several regions, sources said.
