Rs 1L ex gratia for Saraswati Pushkaralu accident victims
Bhupalpally: Expressing sympathy, Minister for IT and Industries Duddilla Sridhar Babu announced an ex-gratia of Rs 1 lakh for the residents of Komaravelli village who lost their lives in an accident at the Saraswati Pushkaralu. He added that the government stands by the family of the sanitation worker who succumbed to head injuries.
No Saturday, the minister participated in a 'Saraswati Pushkaralu – A Day of Thanks' event held in Bhupalapally. Addressing the gathering, he stated that the government is committed to conduct the Godavari Pushkaralu in 2027 on a grand scale.
Sridhar Babu said that with the forthcoming Godavari Pushkaralu in mind, the State government is initiating measures to upgrade the national highway leading to Kaleshwaram into a four-lane road and plans are also underway for the construction of new bus depots in Kaleshwaram and other key locations.
He stated that about 30 lakh devotees took holy dips at Triveni Sangam during the Saraswati Pushkaralu and the event had generated nearly Rs 10 crore in revenue for TSRTC, besides providing free bus travel enabled lakhs of women to participate in the festival with ease. Bhupalapally MLA Gandra Satyanarayana Rao, District Collector Rahul Sharma and other dignitaries attended the programme.

Allahabad HC directs restoration of Sambhal MP's electricity connection
PRAYAGRAJ: The Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd to restore the electricity connection at Samajwadi Party MP Zia-Ur Rehman's house, provided he deposits a permissible amount of Rs. 6 lakhs to maintain his appeal. A division bench, comprising Justice Saumitra Dayal Singh and Justice Sandeep Jain, passed the order on a writ petition filed by the Sambhal MP in the electricity theft case and gave Rehman two weeks to deposit the money. "Submission is that even if the inspection report and adverse facts allegedly found therein are accepted, no jurisdiction arose with the respondent authorities to make assessment for a period of 12 years," the court observed in its June 4 order. "The maximum period for which assessment may have been made could not exceed one year. By breaching the statutory period of assessment, wholly unnatural and arbitrary demand of Rs 1 crore and 91 lakhs has been raised. The petitioner cannot be made to deposit 50% of such illegal demand to maintain an appeal," the court said. The petitioner, Rehman, through its counsel, submitted that he is willing to deposit Rs 6 lakhs to maintain his appeal. The court granted the Corporation three weeks to file a reply in the matter and fixed the next hearing for July 2. In December 2024, the electricity department imposed a fine of Rs 1.91 crore on the MP following an inspection at his residence in Sambhal's Deepa Sarai area, where the officials allegedly discovered power theft.

‘Shows apathy': Allahabad HC raps UP government for delay in disbursing Kumbh stampede compensation
The Allahabad High Court on Friday said that the delay in disbursing compensation to the families of those who died during a stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela pilgrimage site in Prayagraj showed the Uttar Pradesh government's 'apathy to the plight of the citizens', Live Law reported. A bench of Justices Saumitra Dayal Singh and Sandeep Jain also directed the state government to furnish details of the deaths and medical handling of those who died or were injured between January 28 and the end of the pilgrimage. The Bharatiya Janata Party government in the state was also told to submit details of the number of compensation claims it had received and settled, and those that are pending. The stampede had broken out at the Maha Kumbh on January 29 as a large number of pilgrims arrived to take a holy bath on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, a spiritually significant day in the Hindu calendar. The state government has said that at least 30 persons were killed and 60 others were injured, although several media reports have suggested that the actual toll could be significantly higher. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath had announced financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh for those who died in the stampede. The court was hearing a plea filed by the husband of one of the persons who died. It expressed concern that the woman's body had been handed over to her family without a postmortem being conducted. The judges took note of the serious injuries reported on the woman, including a crushed rib cage, and questioned the lack of official documentation or communication with the family regarding the cause and circumstances of the death, Live Law reported. The bench directed that medical institutions and authorities in Prayagraj be made parties to the petitions and directed them to file affidavits disclosing details of all patients and dead bodies that may have been brought to the facilities and those dispatched by them between the incident and the end of the Mela. The bench was alarmed that the woman's body was handed over to the family in February but compensation was yet to be provided, according to Live Law.
