
Scientists try to change Britain's clouds to let in less sunlight in controversial experiment to combat global warming
The UK government 's Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA) has allocated £57 million for so-called 'geoengineering' projects that aim to slow global warming.
Outdoor trials expected to start as soon as 2027 will include 'brightening clouds' in order to reflect sunlight away from Earth.
Marine Cloud Brightening involves ships spraying saltwater into the sky to enhance the reflectivity of low-lying clouds.
The salt will force water droplets in the clouds to come together or 'coalesce', which will make them more reflective and stop so much sunlight reaching Earth.
'You may indeed not be able to see any effect from the ground at all, but you should be able to measure it using equipment that flies through the cloud,' said Professor Mark Symes, programme director for ARIA.
Scientists will build the required sprayers and carry out indoor tests before any outdoor trials take place, at as yet undecided locations in the UK, in the winter of 2027 to 2028.
Initially, the saltwater sprays will cover an area 330 feet wide, but the outdoor trials could be scaled up to several miles before the end of the decade.
According to Professor Symes, such an outdoor trial will be essential to determine the widespread feasibility of Marine Cloud Brightening.
'Modelling and indoor studies are vital, and they can tell us a lot, but they can't tell us everything that we wish to know about feasibility or the impacts of these approaches,' he said.
'Really, to fill that missing gap requires doing real world experiments and collecting real world data, which means experiments that are outdoors.'
However, some scientists are concerned that expensive endeavors could fail or even backfire, causing destructive weather patterns and making climate change worse.
Mike Hulme, a professor of human geography at the University of Cambridge, warned that Aria is leading the world down a 'slippery slope'.
'£57 million is a huge amount of taxpayers' money to be spent on this assortment of speculative technologies intended to manipulate the Earth's climate,' he told the Telegraph.
'Just because they 'work' in a model, or at a micro-scale in the lab or the sky, does not mean they will cool the climate safely, without unwanted side-effects, in the real world.
'There is therefore no way that this research can demonstrate that the technologies are safe, successful or reversible.
'The UK Government is leading the world down what academic analysts call "the slippery slope" towards eventual dangerous large-scale deployment of solar geoengineering technologies.'
Meanwhile, Dr Naomi Vaughan, professor of climate change at the University of East Anglia UEA, said sunlight reflecting methods could create a 'new risk' to society.
'Scientists are cautious about solar radiation management research because of how it could be used or misused in the future,' she said.
In all, £57 million has been allocated by ARIA for 21 geoengineering projects which will include five outdoor trials, The Telegraph reports.
Another University of Cambridge-led project receiving part of the funding is described as an early exploration for the potential of Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (SAI).
It would involve a study on how milligram quantities of mineral dusts age in the stratosphere while contained in an air balloon.
During this controlled experiment, none of these materials will be released into the atmosphere, and all the materials will be returned to the ground for recovery and analysis by scientists, ARIA said.

In March 2023, it was revealed scientists had conducted two open-air experiments to test solar radiation management – reflecting sunlight away from the Earth.
This project, not funded by ARIA, launched a high-altitude weather balloon that released sulfur dioxide in the stratosphere – the second layer of the atmosphere.
Once injected into the stratosphere, sulfur dioxide forms sunlight-reflecting sulfate aerosols, said to have a cooling effect similar to that of a major volcanic eruption.
However, in high levels, sulfur dioxide can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and corrosive damage to the airways and lungs.
Globally, other geoengineering projects include sucking carbon dioxide (CO2) out of the air with giant fans.
There's also 'ocean fertilization' (adding nutrients to the upper ocean to stimulate plant growth) and 'afforestation' (planting trees in areas where there was previously no forest).
But there's concerns countries will pursue poorly-regulated geoengineering projects in secret – especially sun-blocking which could have 'unintended consequences'.
These could include regional droughts, crop failures and shifts to the Atlantic jet stream, which could drag hurricanes and tropical diseases north.
A Bill Gates-backed project has already launched balloons over Baja, Mexico releasing sunlight-reflecting aerosols into Earth's stratosphere.
ARIA said in a statement that all experiments being funded are 'subject to an environmental impact and legal assessment, which will be made publicly available before any outdoor experiment takes place'.
'[They will be] developed through engagement and consultation with local communities and in line with local regulations and requirements.
'[They will be] limited in size, scale, and time-bound, so the effects dissipate within 24 hours or are fully reversible.'
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF GEOENGINEERING STRATEGIES?
Scientists have proposed all sorts of solutions to fight climate change, including a number of controversial geoengineering strategies.
Among the many include:
Afforestation: This technique would irrigate deserts, such as those in Australia and North Africa, to plant millions of trees that could absorb carbon dioxide.
Drawback: This vegetation would also draw in sunlight that the deserts currently reflect back into space, and so contribute to global warming.
Artificial ocean upwelling: Engineers would use long pipes to pump cold, nutrient-rich water upward to cool ocean-surface waters.
Drawback: If this process ever stopped it could cause oceans to rebalance their heat levels and rapidly change the climate.
Ocean alkalinisation: This involves heaping lime into the ocean to chemically increase the absorption of carbon dioxide.
Drawback: Study suggests it will have of little use in reducing global temperatures.
Ocean iron fertilisation: The method involves dumping iron into the oceans to improve the growth of photosynthetic organisms that can absorb carbon dioxide.

Omega fatty acids, found in certain fish or taken as a supplement, could potentially help ward off Alzheimer's disease in women, a new study suggests. Researchers discovered that lipids, fat molecules in the body, are different in women with Alzheimer's compared to those without. Their findings, published in Alzheimer's and Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association, revealed a noticeable loss of unsaturated fats, including those containing omega fatty acids, in the blood of women with the disease compared to healthy women. The study, conducted by scientists from King's College London and Queen Mary University London, examined blood samples from 841 people, including 306 people with Alzheimer's, 165 with mild cognitive impairment and 370 healthy people. However, the researchers stressed that more work is needed to determine whether "shifting the lipid composition can influence the biological trajectory" of the disease. In the study, the team noted a steep increase in lipids with saturation – also known as 'unhealthy lipids' – in women with Alzheimer's compared to women without. But there was no difference between these fat molecules between men with, and without, a diagnosis of Alzheimer's, which researchers say could help deepen knowledge about why more women than men are diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. 'Women are disproportionately impacted by Alzheimer's disease and are more often diagnosed with the disease than men after the age of 80,' said senior author of the study, Dr Cristina Legido-Quigley, from King's College London. 'One of the most surprising things we saw when looking at the different sexes was that there was no difference in these lipids in healthy and cognitively impaired men, but for women, this picture was completely different. 'The study reveals that Alzheimer's lipid biology is different between the sexes, opening new avenues for research. 'Our study suggests that women should make sure they are getting omega fatty acids in their diet – through fatty fish or via supplements. 'However, we need clinical trials to determine if shifting the lipid composition can influence the biological trajectory of Alzheimer's Disease.' Dr Asger Wretlind, first author of the study from King's College London, said: 'Although this still warrants further research, we were able to detect biological differences in lipids between the sexes in a large cohort, and show the importance of lipids containing omegas in the blood, which has not been done before. TAKING omega-3 supplements or eating fatty fish could protect women against Alzheimer's, scientists say. Researchers at King's College London and Queen Mary University London found that women with the disease had a noticeable drop in 'healthy' fats and higher levels of 'unhealthy' fats in their blood compared to those without Alzheimer's. They reckon eating salmon, mackerel or sardines, or taking daily pills, could help to maintain optimum levels and lower the risk of cognitive decline. Senior author Dr Cristina Legido-Quigley, from KCL, said: 'Our study suggests that women should make sure they are getting omega fatty acids in their diet - through fatty fish or via supplements.' Scientists examined the blood of 841 people with and without Alzheimer's - the most common type of dementia. We cannot make them naturally and must get them from our diet. Salmon, mackerel, sardines, anchovies, herring, oysters, walnuts, flaxseeds, chia seeds and soybeans are all good sources. Supplements, available in pharmacies and supermarkets for as little as 9p per pill, are also an option. There is no government recommendation in the UK of how much omega-3 we need, but two 140g portions of fish per week, one of which is oily, is suggested. Women with Alzheimer's have unusually low omega fatty acid levels, study finds
Women should ensure they are getting enough omega fatty acids in their diets according to researchers, who found unusually low levels of the compounds in female patients with Alzheimer's disease. The advice follows an analysis of blood samples from Alzheimer's patients and healthy individuals, which revealed levels of unsaturated fats, such as those containing omega fatty acids, were up to 20% lower in women with the disease. The low levels were not seen in men with Alzheimer's, suggesting there may be sex differences in how the disease takes hold and affects a person's physiology. 'The difference between the sexes was the most shocking and unexpected finding,' said Dr Cristina Legido-Quigley, a senior author on the study at King's College London published in the Alzheimer's & Dementia journal. 'There's an indication that having less of these compounds could be causal in Alzheimer's, but we need a clinical trial to confirm that.' Alzheimer's disease is twice as common in women as in men. Factors including women's longer average lifespan, differences in hormones, immune responses and educational opportunities can all play a role in the development of the disease. In the latest study, researchers analysed the levels of lipids, which are fatty compounds, in the blood of 306 people with Alzheimer's, 165 people with mild cognitive impairment and 370 people who were cognitively healthy controls. Lipids can be saturated or unsaturated, with the former considered unhealthy and the latter broadly healthy. Women with Alzheimer's disease had higher levels of saturated lipids and lower levels of unsaturated lipids than cognitively healthy women, a pattern not seen in men. Legido-Quigley said that if changes in the liver or metabolism were responsible, less omega fatty acids would probably be reaching women's brains. 'And these lipids feed the brain,' she added. Diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as the Mediterranean diet, have long been linked to health benefits for the heart, brain and other organs. One study from 2022 found that middle-aged people with higher blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids had better cognitive function than others. Several trials have found that giving older people omega-3 supplements did not improve their cognitive function or boost mental capacity in those already diagnosed with dementia. Legido-Quigley wants to see a clinical trial established to test whether supplements can delay Alzheimer's disease specifically in women with low levels of unsaturated fatty acids, adding that the drop may start to appear when women are in their 50s. In the meantime, she said women should ensure they are getting omega fatty acids in their diets. There are three essential omega-3 fatty acids, known as ALA, DHA and EPA. ALA is found in plant-based foods such as chia seeds, flaxseed and walnuts. DHA and EPA primarily come from fish. The NHS recommends eating two 140g servings of fish a week, with one being an oily fish, to get enough DHA and EPA. Dr Julia Dudley at Alzheimer's Research UK, which co-funded the study, said more work was needed to unpick the mechanisms behind the sex difference and discover whether lifestyle changes, including diet, could have a role in preventing the disease.
