Anand confident ahead of Gukesh vs Carlsen clash at Norway Chess: 'Indian men's chess is at its peak'
Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand is super excited about the big clash between India's young star Dommaraju Gukesh and world no.1 Magnus Carlsen at the upcoming Norway Chess 2025 tournament. Anand backed Gukesh ahead of the much-anticipated match, calling it a 'perfect storm.'

'We have the perfect storm. Gukesh won't be lacking motivation. But Magnus, too, is inspired by the challenge of facing our young talents. We can expect some epic battles,' Anand said.
Anand also talked about India's rise in chess. 'Indian men's chess is at its peak. And with Humpy and Vaishali both competing, our women's game is on the rise too.'

The tournament will take place in Stavanger, Norway from 26 May to 6 June. Gukesh, who is just 18 years old, has not been in great form in the recent past. Although, he recently became the world's youngest classical world chess champion, led India to gold at the Chess Olympiad, and also won the Tata Steel Masters, he hasn't performed at his best.
Gukesh finished 11th out of 12 players in the Paris leg of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025, where Carlsen took the first prize. He also failed to do well in the Weissenhaus leg, where he took the eighth spot in the final standings. Carlsen secured the third spot in the same event. It will be interesting to see how Gukesh performs against the five-time world champion in Norway.
Norway Chess 2025 is packed with top players. Big names like Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, Arjun Erigaisi, and Wei Yi will be playing in the men's category. The women's group is also strong, with Ju Wenjun, Koneru Humpy, Vaishali Rameshbabu, and Anna Muzychuk. Both groups will play under the same format and will get equal prize money.

Rumours are rife that Sanju Samson will move to Chennai Super Kings after the five-time champions expressed their desire to acquire the wicketkeeper-batter. Badrinath believes Samson is the right fit to replace MS Dhoni at the franchise. However, he pointed out that the right-handed batter might not be able to bat lower down the order for CSK. 'If Sanju Samson does come to CSK, then he could be the like-for-like replacement for MS Dhoni. Samson is a batter who can bat in the top three or four spots in the batting order. He is not someone who could fit in the number five or six spot in the playing XI. CSK are strong in those areas of the playing XI. Mhatre is settled, Gaikwad is settled, Brevis is settled," he said. 'I am not sure if CSK would do a transaction like MI did to get Hardik Pandya from GT. So even if Sanju Samson comes in, the question remains whether CSK can fit him into the playing XI," he added.

According to a report by news agency PTI, the Ajit Agarkar -led selection committee is likely to select the squad for the Asia Cup on August 19 or 20 depending on when the Centre of Excellence's (CoE) Sports Science team sends the medical bulletin of all players, including that of skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who has already started batting at the nets in Bengaluru.. The report further said the BCCI selection committee won't be too keen to tinker with the set-up as Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya form a solid top five. "Abhishek Sharma is world's No. 1 T20 batter in last ICC rankings. Sanju Samson has been fantastic last season with both bat and gloves. So it will certainly be a tough call but Shubman in current form (although in Tests) can't be ignored. He had a good IPL also. Problem for selectors is, there are too many performers at the top of the order," a BCCI source privy to developments told PTI. With so many players in top-order, it would be very difficult to find a slot for Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan. Shivam Dube, who made a good comeback against England, is likely to find his place in the squad. Axar and Washington Sundar are set to be the other two spin-bowling all-rounders in the squad. The main bone of contention will be the seam-bowling attack where Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh have locked their slots. The third slot is a fight between Prasidh Krishna, who has 25 wickets in last IPL, and the burly Harshit Rana, who has ability to bowl some really heavy deliveries. 'It was good, therefore, to see that after the tour to Bangladesh was postponed to next year, the BCCI resisted the pressure to send a team for a white-ball series to Sri Lanka this month,' Gavaskar wrote. Gill's numbers in the recent Test series against England were staggering — 754 runs across five matches, the second-highest by an Indian in a single Test series after Gavaskar himself, who scored 774 in the West Indies in 1971. More importantly, Gill's runs came in a drawn 2-2 contest where he led the Indian side from the front, having taken over the reins following the retirements of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin from red-ball cricket.
