'We have the perfect storm. Gukesh won't be lacking motivation. But Magnus, too, is inspired by the challenge of facing our young talents. We can expect some epic battles,' Anand said.
Anand also talked about India's rise in chess. 'Indian men's chess is at its peak. And with Humpy and Vaishali both competing, our women's game is on the rise too.'

The tournament will take place in Stavanger, Norway from 26 May to 6 June. Gukesh, who is just 18 years old, has not been in great form in the recent past. Although, he recently became the world's youngest classical world chess champion, led India to gold at the Chess Olympiad, and also won the Tata Steel Masters, he hasn't performed at his best.
Gukesh finished 11th out of 12 players in the Paris leg of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025, where Carlsen took the first prize. He also failed to do well in the Weissenhaus leg, where he took the eighth spot in the final standings. Carlsen secured the third spot in the same event. It will be interesting to see how Gukesh performs against the five-time world champion in Norway.
Norway Chess 2025 is packed with top players. Big names like Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, Arjun Erigaisi, and Wei Yi will be playing in the men's category. The women's group is also strong, with Ju Wenjun, Koneru Humpy, Vaishali Rameshbabu, and Anna Muzychuk. Both groups will play under the same format and will get equal prize money.

Riyan Parag blamed for Sanju Samson's likely breakup with Rajasthan Royals: 'He is the reason'

Former India batter Subramaniam Badrinath believes Riyan Parag is the main reason behind Sanju Samson potentially asking the Rajasthan Royals to release him ahead of the IPL 2026 season. According to several reports, the Rajasthan skipper has asked the franchise to release him ahead of the next edition of the tournament. However, a final call is yet to be taken by the management and head coach Rahul Dravid. Sanju Samson has reportedly told Rajasthan Royals to release him. (PTI) In the IPL 2025 season, Samson played as an impact sub in the initial few matches after he wasn't given the clearance for wicketkeeping by the National Cricket Academy (NCA). When Samson played just as a batter, it was Riyan Parag who did the captaincy. When Samson returned as a full-time captain, he once again got injured by suffering a side strain against the Delhi Capitals. When he was ruled out, Parag once again filled in as the captain. Amid this captaincy saga, there were reports of a rumoured rift between head coach Dravid and Samson. However, the former denied all speculations midway through the season. Samson's absence also paved the way for the franchise to give a chance to the 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The youngster grabbed the opportunity with both hands, smashing the fastest century by an Indian in the tournament. Also Read: 'Rajasthan Royals meant the world to me. And then Rahul Dravid…': Sanju Samson adds fresh twist to rumoured exit from RR With the opening pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Suryavanshi all but settled, there is no clarity over Samson's position, and hence, this is what might have prompted Samson to think about moving away from the Royals. 'I feel Riyan Parag is the reason. If you consider him for captaincy, how do you expect someone like Samson to stay?," said Badrinath on his YouTube channel. Samson moving to CSK? Rumours are rife that Sanju Samson will move to Chennai Super Kings after the five-time champions expressed their desire to acquire the wicketkeeper-batter. Badrinath believes Samson is the right fit to replace MS Dhoni at the franchise. However, he pointed out that the right-handed batter might not be able to bat lower down the order for CSK. 'If Sanju Samson does come to CSK, then he could be the like-for-like replacement for MS Dhoni. Samson is a batter who can bat in the top three or four spots in the batting order. He is not someone who could fit in the number five or six spot in the playing XI. CSK are strong in those areas of the playing XI. Mhatre is settled, Gaikwad is settled, Brevis is settled," he said. 'I am not sure if CSK would do a transaction like MI did to get Hardik Pandya from GT. So even if Sanju Samson comes in, the question remains whether CSK can fit him into the playing XI," he added.

India's Squad For Asia Cup: 3 Big Stars To Be Snubbed, Report Says No Yashasvi Jaiswal And...

The Asia Cup will be the Indian cricket team's next big assignment after a memorable England Tour. According to a report by news agency PTI, the Ajit Agarkar -led selection committee is likely to select the squad for the Asia Cup on August 19 or 20 depending on when the Centre of Excellence's (CoE) Sports Science team sends the medical bulletin of all players, including that of skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who has already started batting at the nets in Bengaluru.. The report further said the BCCI selection committee won't be too keen to tinker with the set-up as Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya form a solid top five. "Abhishek Sharma is world's No. 1 T20 batter in last ICC rankings. Sanju Samson has been fantastic last season with both bat and gloves. So it will certainly be a tough call but Shubman in current form (although in Tests) can't be ignored. He had a good IPL also. Problem for selectors is, there are too many performers at the top of the order," a BCCI source privy to developments told PTI. With so many players in top-order, it would be very difficult to find a slot for Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan. Even KL Rahul, who is now the first choice keeper in ODIs, is unlikely to be considered as he doesn't bat in the middle-order. Second keeper's slot While Samson is all but certain to be the first keeper, the choice for the second keeper's slot will be between Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel. While Jurel was a part of the last T20 series, Jitesh had been impressive for RCB during their IPL winning campaign. He has also revelled in the role of a finisher. Reddy unlikely to be fit in time While Hardik Pandya remains India's first choice white ball seam bowling all-rounder, Nitish Kumar Reddy, who suffered injury during the England series, is unlikely to get fit in time. Shivam Dube, who made a good comeback against England, is likely to find his place in the squad. Axar and Washington Sundar are set to be the other two spin-bowling all-rounders in the squad. The main bone of contention will be the seam-bowling attack where Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh have locked their slots. The third slot is a fight between Prasidh Krishna, who has 25 wickets in last IPL, and the burly Harshit Rana, who has ability to bowl some really heavy deliveries. Likely contenders: Suryakumar Yadav (capt), Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Tilak Verma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana/Prasidh Krishna, Hardik Pandya, Jitesh Sharma/Dhruv Jurel.

‘Shubman Gill sent out a signal to the other members of Team India by…': Sunil Gavaskar reacts to Duleep Trophy squad

After lighting up the England summer with a monumental 754-run effort across five gruelling Tests, Shubman Gill could have easily chosen to take a breather. Instead, the newly-appointed Indian Test captain has decided to lead North Zone in the Duleep Trophy, drawing high praise from one of the game's greatest voices, Sunil Gavaskar. Sunil Gavaskar lauded Shubman Gill for choosing to lead North Zone in Duleep Trophy(AFP) Gavaskar lauded Gill's decision to return to the domestic circuit so soon after a demanding overseas tour in his column for Sportstar. The 25-year-old opener is set to lead North Zone in their opening clash against East Zone on August 28 in Bengaluru, just four weeks after the last Test against England wrapped up. The BCCI's call not to squeeze in a white-ball tour to Sri Lanka after the Bangladesh tour was postponed opened the door for top players to reinvest in domestic cricket. While several fast bowlers are being rested following the England tour, Gill's choice to stay engaged reflects a long-term commitment to India's first-class structure. 'It was good, therefore, to see that after the tour to Bangladesh was postponed to next year, the BCCI resisted the pressure to send a team for a white-ball series to Sri Lanka this month,' Gavaskar wrote. 'By doing that, the BCCI have prioritised domestic cricket, as it means that now most, if not all, of the top players will be available to play in the Duleep Trophy.' Gavaskar pointed to Gill's participation as a symbolic and significant boost for the tournament. 'Shubman Gill, captaining the North Zone team, is a massive shot in the arm for this tournament. By being available, the Indian skipper is sending the right signal to the other members of the team,' he wrote. "It would have been understandable if, after a gruelling tour where five Test matches were crammed in a little over six weeks, he had opted to rest. The fast bowlers not playing is good thinking, as it has been an unusually hot summer in England, thanks to global warming, and their energies must have been expended after the untiring spells they bowled throughout the series," the legendary cricketer added. Gill's numbers in the recent Test series against England were staggering — 754 runs across five matches, the second-highest by an Indian in a single Test series after Gavaskar himself, who scored 774 in the West Indies in 1971. More importantly, Gill's runs came in a drawn 2-2 contest where he led the Indian side from the front, having taken over the reins following the retirements of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin from red-ball cricket. Shubman Gill highlights North Zone squad in Duleep Trophy Gill's North Zone squad is a strong blend of youth and experience. Left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh, seamer Harshit Rana, and allrounder Anshul Kamboj — who debuted in the Old Trafford Test — join Gill in a promising 15-member lineup. Jammu and Kashmir have the largest representation with five players, including senior opener Shubham Khajuria and seamer Auqib Nabi, who finished as the second-highest wicket-taker in the last Ranji Trophy season with 44 wickets at a staggering average of 13.93. Ankit Kumar, Haryana's leading run-scorer from the 2024-25 Ranji season, has been named vice-captain, while Delhi's Yash Dhull, Ayush Badoni and Rana bring U-19 and IPL pedigree. With the Duleep Trophy marking the start of the 2025-26 domestic calendar and returning to its traditional zonal format, Gill's presence sends a clear message. Indian cricket's next chapter, it seems, will not only be built on international glories but on the foundation of robust domestic performances. North Zone Squad: Shubman Gill (captain, PCA), Ankit Kumar (vice-captain, HCA), Shubham Khajuria (JKCA), Ayush Badoni (DDCA), Yash Dhull (DDCA), Ankit Kalsi (HPCA), Nishant Sindhu (HCA), Sahil Lotra (JKCA), Mayank Dagar (HPCA), Yudhvir Singh Charak (JKCA), Arshdeep Singh (PCA), Harshit Rana (DDCA), Anshul Kamboj (HCA), Auqib Nabi (JKCA), Kanhaiya Wadhawan (wicketkeeper, JKCA).
