The Houston Astros will be among the teams pursuing starting pitching at the trade deadline in July.
After losing Ronel Blanco on Wednesday due to elbow surgery, the Astros' pitching depth is very thin. Entering Sunday, they were 31-27 and just a half-game behind the Seattle Mariners in the American League West.
MLB insider Bob Nightengale reported Sunday the Astros will pursue a starting pitcher at the deadline. He also reported the Pirates are putting everyone on the table to be traded except Oneil Cruz and Paul Skenes.
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA - MAY 30: Mitch Keller #23 of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitches against the San Diego Padres during the first inning at Petco Park on May 30, 2025 in San Diego, California.
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA - MAY 30: Mitch Keller #23 of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitches against the San Diego Padres during the first inning at Petco Park on May 30, 2025 in San Diego, California."The Houston Astros say they are on the lookout for starting pitching after losing Ronel Blanco," wrote Nightengale. "He is the third Astros starter to go down in the season's first two months, joining Hayden Wesneski who underwent Tommy John surgery last week, and Spencer Arrighetti (broken thumb). ... The Pittsburgh Pirates are flatly rebuking all interest from teams wanting to engage in trade talks for ace Paul Skenes, but will listen to offers on every other player but him and outfielder Oneil Cruz."
Keller is in the second year of his $77 million contract, so the Astros would have to pay the remainder of the $15.4 million he is owed this year plus the remaining $55.7 million
The Pirates and Astros have been trade partners in the past for starting pitching as Houston was the landing spot for Gerrit Cole when he left Pittsburgh. If Keller is traded to the Astros, Ben Cherington's challenge will be to get a better return for Keller than his predecessor did for Cole.
The Astros would have to cough up a considerable package for Keller since he has 3 1/2 years of team control remaining. This may deter them a bit, but it would all come down to a comparison between the cost for Keller and the cost for a rental at the deadline.
Through 12 starts this season, Keller has a 3.73 ERA with 56 strikeouts. His record isn't pretty, but that's due to a lack of run support. Pittsburgh has scored a total of six runs in his last five starts, and four of them have ended in losses.
Keller would be a good fit for the Astros, who would provide him with a lot more run support than the Pirates have this year. Houston would certainly get the most out of him as a pitcher as well.

Pirates Nick Gonzales returns to active roster for first time since breaking his ankle in opener

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Nick Gonzales was back in the Pittsburgh Pirates starting lineup on Tuesday night for the first time since breaking his left ankle while hitting a home run on opening day in Miami on March 27. The second baseman was activated from the 60-day injured list before the opener of a three-game series with the visiting Houston Astros. Gonzales had been sidelined with a non-displaced fracture. 'It feels great, just to be out here again and see the guys,' Gonzales said before the game. 'It felt different today coming to the ballpark knowing that I'm actually playing today versus how it was the past few weeks, where there's no opportunity for me to go in the game. I couldn't even really walk around, so I'm excited to be out in the dugout just laughing with the guys and help the team win.' Gonzales, 26, played nine rehab games with Triple-A Indianapolis and hit .194. In other roster moves, right-handed reliever Kyle Nicolas was recalled from Triple-A, and infielder/outfielder Nick Solak was designated for assignment. Right-handed reliever Tanner Rainey was DFA'd on Thursday's off day when infielder Ronny Simon was claimed off waivers from Miami and optioned to Indianapolis. ___ AP MLB:

Padres' Gavin Sheets gets injury update after scary wall collision in Pirates game

The post Padres' Gavin Sheets gets injury update after scary wall collision in Pirates game appeared first on ClutchPoints. Gavin Sheets gave the San Diego Padres fans a major scare on Sunday after crashing into the left-field wall during the fourth inning of their game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Advertisement While tracking a deep shot from Adam Frazier, Sheets slammed into the padded fence at full speed. He dropped to the ground and stayed down for several minutes as team trainers rushed in. Thankfully, he managed to walk off the field on his own, and Brandon Lockridge replaced him in left field. Manager Mike Shildt later shared that Sheets suffered a head contusion, a sore hip, and a jammed wrist and thumb. He also noted the team is still checking for a possible concussion. Despite the multiple injuries, Shildt said Sheets had already shown signs of improvement in the hours following the incident. The timing could not be worse for San Diego. Advertisement Sheets has been one of the team's most pleasant surprises this season. After the Chicago White Sox let him go last November, the Padres picked him up on a minor league deal just before spring training. What started as a low-risk signing quickly turned into a key roster move. Since Opening Day, Sheets has become a major contributor, hitting .267 with an .817 OPS and has racked up 11 home runs, second only to Fernando Tatis Jr. on the team. He also leads San Diego in RBIs with 34. Known more for his bat, Sheets had mostly played first base and served as a designated hitter earlier in the season. But with the Padres struggling to produce from left field, he stepped in and made the transition. If he ends up missing time, the Padres may need to rely on utility players Tyler Wade and Brandon Lockridge. Lockridge finished the game in Sheets' place but was later replaced by Wade as a pinch-hitter when the Pirates changed pitchers. Advertisement While both are versatile, neither brings the same power or consistency at the plate as Sheets. The Padres came away with a 6-4 win, but the bigger concern now is the health of one of their most important offensive players. As medical evaluations continue, the team and its fans are hoping for good news. Losing Sheets for any stretch would be a tough challenge in the middle of an already competitive season.

Expert picks & predictions for tonight's game between the Astros and the Pirates 'If there is a head-to-head strikeout market, this is a game where I would fade Paul Skenes and go with the opposing pitcher. Luckily, Lance McCullers has 20 strikeouts in his past two starts and 12 Ks to one walk on 102 pitches in his previous start (6.0 innings). That previous start was McCullers fifth, so he is stretched out and while I doubt he goes over 100 pitches again, I certainly expect at least 90-plus and that is enough to get at least six strikeouts against the Pirates lineup.'
