‘Incompatible with the symbolism': Yorgos Lanthimos denied permission to shoot new film at the Acropolis

The Guardian07-04-2025

Greece's leading contemporary director has had a request to shoot footage for his new film at the Acropolis in Athens denied by his country's culture ministry.
Yorgos Lanthimos had filed a request to film scenes for sci-fi comedy Bugonia at the fifth-century BC site in April. But in a statement on Thursday, the culture ministry said permission had been refused because 'the proposed scenes are incompatible with the symbolism … and the values the Acropolis represents'.
Bugonia is Lanthimos's latest collaboration with Emma Stone, who won the best actress Oscar for her role in his 2023 comedy Poor Things. In their new film, whose scheduled November release date suggests a major awards push, Stone stars as the CEO of a major pharmaceutical company kidnapped by a conspiracist bee-keeper, played by her Kinds of Kindness co-star Jesse Plemons.
The scenes in question depicted 70 dead bodies placed between two of the Greek citadel's key sites: the Propylaea, its complex of Doric entrance buildings, and the Parthenon, the temple dedicated to the goddess Athena.
Lanthimos's request appears to have initially been welcomed by the ministry of culture, who agreed to waive the standard filming fee for the Acropolis – around €1,984 (£1,700) per day – in recognition of the director's international standing.
However, this offer was subject to the approval of the Central Archaeological Council, which oversees the Acropolis. They rejected Lanthimos's proposal, citing symbolic inappropriateness and insufficient reverence, and suggested nearby alternatives where he could film.
The ministry of culture is said to have delayed its final ruling until producers from the film indicated whether they would pursue another location. On Wednesday, culture minister Lina Mendoni received a letter from Lanthimos's team, reiterating their previously rejected request, but reportedly not providing sufficient grounds for her to ask the Central Archeological Council to reconsider.
Despite being widely regarded as one of the planet's most important cultural artefacts, the Acropolis in Athens has often been used as a filming location. It featured extensively in Sophia Loren's 1957 breakthrough, Boy on a Dolphin, as well as in more recent films such as Patricia Highsmith adaptation The Two Faces of January (2014) and Before Midnight (2013).
Comparable sites, such as Stonehenge or the Vatican, are usually rebuilt as replicas.
Born in Athens, Lanthimos, 51, was among the creative team behind the TV visuals for the 2004 Olympics held in the city. He made his breakthrough film with 2009's Dogtooth, which won the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes and was nominated for the best international Oscar.
Alps (2011), The Lobster (2015) and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) cemented his reputation for challenging absurdist comedies, before he found mainstream acclaim with Queen Anne comedy-drama The Favourite (2018), which was nominated for 10 Oscars, winning best actress for Olivia Colman.
Lanthimos's first photography monograph, titled Dear God, the Parthenon Is Still Broken, featured photos shot behind the scenes on Poor Things. A second book, I Shall Sing These Songs Beautifully, collected shots from the production of Kinds of Kindness.
An exhibition of some of these photographs – Lanthimos's first bricks-and-mortar show – has just opened at a gallery in Los Angeles.

Jamie Foxx delivers heartfelt speech at BET Awards thanking daughters who helped his stroke recovery

Jamie Foxx let the tears flow while accepting the Ultimate Icon Award at the BET Awards on June 9. After being introduced by Stevie Wonder, the Oscar winner opened on a note of gratitude. 'Man, we used to take this thing for granted — that God is good,' he began his speech. 'I cannot even begin to express the love that I feel from everybody out there,' he continued. Foxx, who revealed in his 2024 Netflix special 'Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was...' that he had suffered a brain bleed that led to a stroke in 2023, expressed appreciation at his good fortune, noting he thought there was a time he could've been included in the show's in memoriam segment. 'I got to be honest ... When I saw that in memoriam, I was like, 'Man, that could've been me,'' he said. 'But I don't know why I went through what I went through, but I know my second chance, I'm not going to turn it down,' he said while getting emotional. 'I'm not going to turn down. I have so much love to give. I told Him, I said, 'Man, bro,' I said, 'Just give me one more crack at this and I promise.' I said, 'Whatever reason you put this on me, I promise I'm (going to) do right. And I'm (going to) do right in front of y'all, because I know a lot of times, when we get on we forget about where we come from,' he said. Later, he turned his attention to his family, starting with his sister, Deidre Dixon, who was at the show. He thanked her for helping save his life. 'When I went through what I was going through, she shut it down. And she made sure that she took care of her brother,' he said. The 'Ray' star also paid tribute to his two daughters. 'My beautiful daughter, Corinne, I cannot say enough about you. You've always taken a backseat to everything. But when you needed to drive it, you drove. And you made sure I was here ... At a certain point, I'm going to stop crying, but I'm not going to stop just yet,' he said, fighting tears. Foxx then turned his attention to his other daughter, Anelise. 'Anelise Estelle Foxx, my baby with the big hair. She hides under that hair because she got something special. You're so beautiful, man,' Foxx said. 'When I was fighting for my life in there, I got to say this. They said, 'We're going to lose him because his vitals are bad.' And I didn't want my 14-year-old to see me like that. 'But Anelise overheard the conversation and she snuck into my hospital room with her guitar and said, 'I know what my Daddy needs,'' he continued. 'And as she played the guitar, my vitals dropped. And I realized that God was in that guitar. And the nurses ran in and said, 'What did they give him?' My daughter said, 'Shh, I've got him.'' During his Netflix special, Foxx talked about how Anelise helped save his life when she played the guitar for him in the hospital. 'You know what I found out? It was God in that guitar,' he said. 'That's my spiritual defibrillator.' She then walked onto the stage with her guitar and they hugged.

King Charles told Conclave author he watched papal selection film

King Charles told Conclave author he watched papal selection film Robert Harris, 68, was formally made a CBE by Charles for services to literature in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday King Charles III and Queen Camilla on the balcony of Buckingham Palace during Trooping the Colour on June 17, 2023 (Image: Mark Cuthbert / UK Press via Getty Images ) The author of the hit novel turned Oscar-nominated picture Conclave said the King revealed to him that he has watched the film. Robert Harris, 68, was formally made a CBE by Charles for services to literature in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday. ‌ Harris said it was "eerie" and "like an out of body experience" to see his 2016 book turned into a film, and then to see the papal selection process which he had researched in so much detail play out in May after the death of Pope Francis. ‌ "(It was) very odd, I suppose because I researched it very thoroughly, and really it's the sort of thing that can practically only be done in fiction because you have to have a lot of conjecture," Harris told the PA news agency. "And so it acted as a kind of primer for journalists and for people, so that was very strange. "And then, of course, the extraordinary fact that the new pope watched it on the eve of the conclave." Article continues below Pope Leo's brother John Prevost told NBC News his younger sibling had watched the film before the secret vote. Harris said the King also asked about his new book. "We talked a bit about Conclave, which he has seen," Harris said. ‌ "He's been reading my books for years, so it was nice to see him again." The journalist-turned-novelist also joked about how seeing the inside of Buckingham Palace could provide him inspiration for his future books. "There'd have to be some mystery in the throne room, yes, murder in the throne room! It's got possibilities." ‌ Harris said it was a "very generous gesture" to receive the honour and he had "never thought about it" before being asked. Author Dame Jacqueline Wilson was made a Dame Grand Cross for her services to the same industry at the ceremony. The 79-year-old former children's laureate is widely known as the creator of Tracy Beaker and has written more than 100 novels. ‌ "It feels like a dream," Dame Jacqueline said on receiving the honour. "I'm so pleased, so proud. "I was just totally taken by surprise. To be utterly truthful, I didn't even know this particular honour existed. I'm so proud and so overwhelmed. "If little girl Jacqueline could be told that I'd be standing outside Buckingham Palace with medals and a sash, she would have been astonished." ‌ Dame Jacqueline said the King was "jovial" and they laughed about getting her sash on over her "silly hat". "And I did thank him, and particularly also thanked Her Majesty the Queen, because she takes such an interest in children's literature, and that makes all of us writers feel very pleased," she said. Last year, Dame Jacqueline released her first adult novel since the 1970s as she returned to her beloved Girls series.
