Khaleej Times28-04-2025
Humanitarian leaders will soon have access to immersive training programmes through the launch of the Humanthropy Academy, a new platform designed to help prepare the next generation of leaders in humanitarian work.
The academy aims to connect top experts and educators to provide hands-on learning and valuable experience.
'This platform will connect world-renowned experts and educators to equip tomorrow's humanitarian leaders through immersive training programmes and experiential learning,' said Dr Abdulsalam AlMadani, chairman of Dihad Sustainable Humanitarian Organisation and Roving Ambassador of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (Pam) for the GCC Region.
Dr Abdulsalam also revealed many upcoming initiatives for Dihad, including the Dihad Opportunities Platform, an empowering initiative launched in collaboration with IACAD and NAFIS.
Several initiatives under Dihad
Alongside the launch of the Humanthropy Academy, Dr AlMadani also unveiled several new initiatives under Dihad. Among them is the Dihad Opportunities Platform, created in partnership with IACAD and NAFIS. "This is designed to empower UAE nationals with the skills, knowledge, and global exposure needed to take on impactful roles within the international humanitarian and development sector," he explained.
Furthermore, initiatives like the Partnership Hub and the DIHAD Government Hub will foster collaboration among diverse stakeholders. The Government Hub will act as a collaborative space for policymakers and governments to design forward-thinking humanitarian policies. Meanwhile, the Partnership Hub will connect entities, NGOs, government agencies, and suppliers to foster impactful, cross-sector partnerships.
'What excites me most is not just what we are building, but who we are building it with,' he stated, highlighting the growing network of changemakers involved in Dihad's mission.
He envisions this year as a time of acceleration, bold action, and deeper collaboration. action and deeper partnerships, he believes this year will not only continue the conversation but also accelerate it, fueled by an unshakable belief in the power of collective humanity.
Dedication to humanitarian work
Reflecting on his personal motivations, Dr AlMadani shared how his dedication to humanitarian work was shaped by early values instilled during his upbringing. He cited the enduring legacy of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE, as a key influence. 'His vision of generosity, compassion, and unity laid the foundation for not just a nation, but a way of life,' he said.
Dr AlMadani also acknowledged his father's role in shaping his perspective: 'Humanity begins at home, in small acts of kindness that ripple outward.' These foundational values instilled in him a belief that service is not optional — it is a duty.
Challenges and first projects
Dihad's journey began with the creation of the Dihad Conference and Exhibition, a groundbreaking event aimed at uniting humanitarian actors from around the world.
'Convincing stakeholders from diverse sectors to come together for a shared humanitarian vision was no small feat,' Dr AlMadani recalled. Despite early scepticism, he and his team remained committed, confident in the UAE's potential to drive meaningful collaboration. 'What started as a bold idea became a movement,' he said.
Recognising that humanitarianism must evolve beyond emergency responses, Dr AlMadani led the founding of the Dihad Sustainable Humanitarian Foundation and the Dihad Humanitarian College. These initiatives emphasise the importance of education and empowerment in creating lasting impact. 'The most effective aid is not just about what we give, but how we give it,' he noted.
A cornerstone of this vision is education. The launch of the Dihad Humanitarian College, offering the world's first Master's Degree in Sustainable Humanitarian Action, marks a major milestone. 'Education is not just about information; it's about empowerment through diversity and real-world wisdom,' Dr AlMadani emphasised. Through knowledge, Dihad seeks to nurture leaders who will drive change within their own communities and beyond.

Oman: Port of Salalah reports strong growth in first half of 2025

MUSCAT - Port of Salalah, Oman's largest container terminal and a leading transshipment hub on the Arabian Sea, has delivered one of its strongest operational and financial performances for the six months ended on June 30, 2025. The Container Terminal (CT) handled 2.03 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), up 21% from 1.68 million TEUs during the corresponding period last year. This growth was attributed to an increase in vessel calls following the successful completion of the terminal's upgrade, as well as the full phasing-in of all Gemini proforma services by Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. The General Cargo Terminal (GCT) handled 12.91 million metric tonnes during the same period, compared with 11.66 million metric tonnes a year earlier – a growth of 11%. This increase was largely driven by higher exports of dry bulk cargo. Braik bin Musallam al Amri, Chairman of the Board of Directors, credited the improved container throughput to the recently completed terminal upgrade. 'Following the successful completion of our container terminal upgrade project, we are pleased to report a steady recovery in transshipment volumes,' Al Amri said. 'The infrastructure enhancements have significantly increased our handling capacity from 4.5 million TEUs to 6 million TEUs, representing a 1.5 million TEU capacity expansion. The Gemini network has played a pivotal role in supporting this positive trajectory, further solidifying Port of Salalah's position as a premier regional transshipment hub.' Al Amri also noted that general cargo volumes continue to post sustained growth, particularly in dry bulk exports. 'This positive trajectory necessitates focused investment in equipment upgrades and infrastructure enhancements to maintain service quality and support future expansion. Notably, gypsum exports have shown consistent growth, reinforcing Port of Salalah's strategic position as the region's premier gypsum export hub. This specialisation complements our diversified cargo portfolio while driving operational synergies across terminal assets.' On the financial front, Port of Salalah reported consolidated revenue from operations of RO 42.42 million, up from RO 35.04 million last year. Consolidated EBITDA surged to RO 12.78 million from RO 7.13 million, while consolidated net profit rose to RO 2.48 million, compared with RO 1.57 million in H1 2024. According to the Chairman, Port of Salalah is evolving into an integrated trade and logistics facilitator, actively enabling investment opportunities and addressing sector-specific challenges. This expanded role, he stressed, strengthens the port's position as a regional economic catalyst while creating new value streams. 2025 © All right reserved for Oman Establishment for Press, Publication and Advertising (OEPPA) Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. Dubai's Heritage Mosques to be Upgraded Under New Strategy

Dubai has launched a forward-looking initiative aimed at merging urban modernization with heritage preservation. A strategic cooperation agreement between Dubai Municipality and the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD) will restore and maintain the emirate's heritage mosques, safeguarding their traditional character and authentic architectural elements. This move embodies Dubai's broader commitment to balancing rapid urban growth with cultural conservation. Under the agreement, Dubai Municipality will lead the restoration of these historical religious sites, ensuring their architectural identity remains intact. Meanwhile, IACAD will uphold operational standards, managing the appointment of imams, muezzins, and preachers, as well as overseeing daily cleaning and religious programming to preserve religious and cultural continuity. A key component of the strategy includes enhancing Eid prayer grounds. These open-air spaces will be upgraded to better accommodate Dubai's expanding urban landscape and population, with upgraded designs and improved readiness to host large-scale gatherings during significant religious observances. The agreement also extends to the improvement of funeral and cemetery services. Dubai Municipality will refine mortuary washing facilities and provide logistical enhancements, while IACAD will ensure that all Shariah-compliant and religious protocols are met, including staffing, training, licensing, and operational oversight. This initiative is part of Dubai's evolving strategy to enhance institutional collaboration and improve residents' quality of life. As expressed by Ahmad Bin Ghalita, Director-General of Dubai Municipality, the agreement reinforces efforts to 'provide high-quality services that benefit the entire community while preserving the authentic character of historic mosques and prayer sites.' Dubai Government's Media Office emphasized the partnership is aimed at 'blending urban progress with heritage conservation.' By forging a unified vision for mosque design and construction, this collaboration sets a blueprint for harmonizing modern infrastructure and deep-rooted cultural identity. The move sends a strong message: as Dubai continues to develop into a global urban hub, it remains deeply committed to preserving its rich religious and architectural heritage.
