Jaiswal sets the tone with another ton

Deccan Herald7 hours ago

The proof is in the pudding. His pulsating 101 on the opening day of the first Test against England in Headingley on Friday was his fifth century in his 21st Test. It also showed what a fantastic young opener the Mumbaikar is blossoming into with a third triple-digit score on his fourth trip on the road.

IND vs ENG: Rampant Rishabh Pant can afford to smile

India's Rishabh Pant (AP Photo/Scott Heppell) A few months ago, Rishabh Pant found himself at the dark end of a tunnel. His recklessness in both innings of the fourth Test against Australia at the MCG was seen as one of the reasons behind India's series defeat, especially since the series was locked at 1-1 till that point. The team management was unhappy, Pant lost his place in the ODI first XI in the Champions Trophy while Sanju Samson seemed to be taking a runaway lead in the T20 scheme of things. The fact that Pant had a bad IPL as Lucknow Supergiants captain didn't help his cause either. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Since his India debut during the Nottingham Test of the England series in 2018, the wicketkeeper-batter's place in the team had never been in doubt. The horrific car accident in Dec 2022 was obviously a massive blow but the spunky Pant always knew that the moment he was fit to play, he would be back in India colours. IND vs ENG: Rishabh Pant opens up on chemistry with Shubman Gill and England challenge But all that seemed to be falling apart following the Australia debacle. Until Saturday, that is. The broad smile that is part and parcel of the Pant package was back as he lofted offie Shoaib Bashir for a six to reach his seventh Test century — the most by an Indian wicketkeeper-batter — to go past MS Dhoni . India have entered a new era and the management, despite its reservations about Pant's white-ball game, has made him the vice-captain for Tests. It was a vote of confidence that the 27-year-old so desperately needed. But the beauty of Pant is that the added responsibility didn't send him into a shell. He was yet to score on Friday evening when he stepped out to Ben Stokes — who was high on confidence after getting centurion Yashasvi Jaiswal with a beauty — and hit him straight over the allrounder's head. Even the England captain couldn't help but laugh at the audacity of the young player. Probably Stokes saw shades of himself in Pant. Quiz: Who's that IPL player? Pant made things look ridiculously easy during his 134 and Cheteshwar Pujara , during the pre-match show, explained how the left-hander took the pressure off his partner with the way he batted. 'When I batted with Pant, I saw his ability to throw the bowler off his line and length. Batting at the other end, it helped me as well and run-scoring became that much easier,' the former India No. 3 said. While the courage to go after the bowling is intrinsic to Pant's attacking style of batting, there's a method to his madness. Pant's sudden burst of boundaries after a slight period of lull often wows the fans, but Pujara says it's part of a plan. 'You'll see these sudden phases when Pant starts defending with a dead bat for a few deliveries. It is often to give the bowler a false sense of confidence so that he bowls in the same spot. He predicts the length very well and plays those ramp shots which may look quite dangerous from the outside,' Pujara said. IND vs ENG: Jasprit Bumrah battles alone, Rishabh Pant's century overshadowed by late India collapse

India's Jasprit Bumrah (AP Photo/Scott Heppell) Boom or bust? That has been the recurring theme of India's Test cricket since the beginning of the Australia series. Six months down the line, things don't seem to have changed much. Arguably India's greatest match-winning bowler of all time, Jasprit Bumrah (3/48), delivered in every spell that he bowled on Saturday. With little or no help at the other end, it was the magnificence of the 30-year-old that helped India keep their nose ahead at the end of the second day. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Joe Root 's dismissal, a nervous poke off Bumrah to first slip, gave India the much-needed fillip that the visitors needed after they were sent on a bit of a leather hunt for the better part of two sessions. India could have had the wicket of Harry Brook as well in the last over, but Bumrah's third no-ball of the over allowed the right-hander a life despite being caught. After Rishabh Pant got his seventh Test century and India scored 471 despite a late mini-collapse, the stage was beautifully set for the four-pronged Indian pace attack to make some serious dent on the English batting on the second day of the first Test at Headingley. 14:48 IND vs ENG: Rishabh Pant opens up on chemistry with Shubman Gill and England challenge With a thick cloud cover in the post-lunch session when India started bowling, Bumrah was absolutely unplayable. He got an incredible amount of movement with the new ball but there was simply no help from the other end. The mercurial paceman got Zak Crawley (4) in his first over and was making life miserable for Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Davao City: Scholarships You Can Apply For (Start Now) College Scholarship | Google Search Search Now Undo But Jadeja at point dropped a sitter offered by Duckett when he was 15 off Bumrah's bowling, giving a lease of life to the English batting. The fact that both Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna hardly got anything out of the pitch compounded India's problems. Quiz: Who's that IPL player? Shubman Gill , in his first Test as captain, didn't bring Shardul Thakur on, despite his ability to move the ball in favourable conditions. Pope (batting on 100) and Duckett knew it was a matter of playing Bumrah out, and they did just that. The duo maintained a steady run-rate of five when Bumrah was brought back again for his third spell after tea. Everything seemed to change again. Duckett (62) inside-edged one to be bowled while Pope, now on 60, was dropped at third slip by Yashasvi Jaiswal. Pope didn't need a second invitation, going on to complete his ninth Test century as England finished the day at 209-3. Earlier, Pant and Gill made hay. The captain started from where he left off on Friday. The bat was coming down straight, he looked to play late and was beautifully balanced. Pant, on the other hand, was slightly more adventurous. However, India lost their last seven wickets for 41 runs and we'll know in a couple of days' time if this blip will cost them dear. Jofra Archer set for First-Class return after four years, boosts England's injury-hit pace attack

England pacer Jofra Archer is set to return to First-Class cricket for the first time in four years after being named in English county side Sussex's squad for their away match against Durham, starting on Sunday. Despite initial confusion over his availability, as Archer was not named in a 12-player squad for the County Championship match, his return in the Sussex squad, as later clarified by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), will give England a much-needed boost. Archer has not played a Test match since February 2021, and his last red-ball match was for Sussex in May 2021 after a series of injuries kept delaying his return. The ace pacer has since returned to international white-ball cricket for England, with his last appearance coming in the ICC Champions Trophy held in Pakistan earlier this year. Archer is among many English quicks currently out through injury, with Mark Wood, Olly Stone and Gus Atkinson all currently unavailable. Wood said he is targeting the fifth India-England Test for his potential return from injury, while Archer could make his international return for the second India-England Test. England captain Ben Stokes has said the 30-year-old is 'absolutely desperate to put the white shirt back on.' Speaking on Archer, 'Randomly, a couple of times he would just send me a text saying, 'Zimbabwe?'' said Stokes to Sky Sports, referencing England's innings victory at Trent Bridge in May. 'I was like, 'Let's just hold it there, alright. I know you're in a good spot right now but let's not just rush into it'. He's obviously had a horrific time with injuries but he's had some good amount of cricket, albeit in the white-ball formats.' 'It's really exciting for England, but also more exciting for Jof that he's in a position now where we're able to have a plan in place, and hopefully him get through something to actually be considered for selection for Test cricket,' he added.
