Graveyard bulldozed in Sambhal; houses, shops marked in red for demolition
Officials said action in the matter -- under section 67 of the UP Revenue Code -- was taken following an investigation. They also marked around 31 shops and 20 houses in nearby Turtipur Ilha as "illegal structure on govt school and gram samaj land".
Locals who reside near the graveyard were seemingly upset. One of them said, "Razing any grave is not right. These graves were very old..." A young resident added: "We have been seeing these graves since our childhood."
Sambhal DM, Rajender Pensiya, said, "Sambhal's tehsildar court ordered the removal of encroachments on July 9. Since no appeal was made against the order within the stipulated time, demolition was carried out with bulldozers in the presence of police personnel. Public use of the encroached graveyard was stopped a long time ago."
The DM added that the land will now be used to build a police post and a girls' hostel. "Cost of the reclaimed land is around Rs 6 cr.
This place was encroached upon over the years with boundary walls and a large concrete gate, which has been razed," he said.
During the anti-encroachment drive at Turtipur Ilha locality, officials marked about 51 properties as "illegal" with red paint. The DM said that land records confirmed the sites were govt-owned, and the occupants were told to prove ownership or face demolition. "Some of the structures are 15–20 years old," he said.
At both locations, residents opposed the administrative action. "We have been living here for decades. This house was built by my grandfather some 60 years ago. Many other houses in the locality are of the same time," a local said. Another added: "Declaring them illegal without due consideration is unfair and wrong."

Senior Maoist leader gunned down in Jharkhand encounter
A joint team of Chaibasa Police and CoBRA 209 battalion gunned down a senior CPI (Maoist) leader during an encounter in the forests of Goilkera in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district Wednesday morning. Police said the militant has been identified as Arun alias Varun alias Nilesh Madkam, an area commander of the banned CPI (Maoist) outfit, hailing from Konta police station limits in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh. An official also confirmed that he carried a bounty of Rs 2 lakh on his head. According to police, Maoist leaders including Misir Besra, Anmol, Mochu Anal, Aseem Mandal, Ajay Mahato, Sagen Angaria, and Ashwin have been actively moving with their armed squads in the Kolhan-Saranda region, allegedly plotting attacks on security forces and engaging in anti-national activities. On August 12, intelligence inputs suggested that top Maoist leaders and various squad commanders, identified as Ravi Sardar, Jaikant, Arun, Sandeep, Shiva, Rishibh, Upton, Sanat, Amit Munda, and Bhuneshwar alias Saluka Kayam Somwari had gathered in Kolhan to execute a 'major incident' ahead of Independence Day. Acting on the input, a joint operation was launched by Chaibasa Police and CoBRA 209 battalion. Around 6 am on Wednesday, the forces came under fire in the hilly and forested areas near Dugunia, Posaeta, and Tumbagada under Goilkera police station limits, officials said. The security personnel retaliated, forcing the Maoist squad to retreat into the dense jungle. During the subsequent search, the body of a male Maoist was recovered along with an SLR rifle, cartridges, and other daily-use items, officials said. According to the police, Arun had a long criminal history, including involvement in multiple murders, kidnappings, attacks on security forces, extortion, and offences under the Arms Act, and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act across Goilkera, Sonua, and Tonto police station areas. The recovered weapon and materials have been seized, and further action is being taken in line with the National Human Rights Commission's SOPs, police said, adding that the anti-Maoist operation in the region is still ongoing.

Govt doubles pension for JP senanis
Patna: The govt on Wednesday decided to double the pension amount for 'JP senanis'—the political activists who had been imprisoned during the Emergency for supporting socialist leader Jayaprakash Narayan-led movement. The proposal was cleared at a cabinet meeting chaired by CM Nitish Kumar , who himself played a lead role in the 'JP movement' that began in 1974. "The pension for 'JP senanis', who had spent more than six months behind bars, has been raised to Rs 30,000 per month from Rs 15,000, and for those who served shorter prison terms, it has been hiked from Rs 7,500 to Rs 15,000," cabinet secretariat department's additional chief secretary S Siddharth said. "The JP senanis who participated in the JP movement and the subsequent emergency period between March 18, 1974 and March 21, 1977 will get double the amount as "samman pension" now," he said. There are altogether 3,354 JP senani who are currently getting pension in the state, a home dept official said. Nitish had launched the pension scheme named after Jayaprakash Narayan in 2009. Jharkhand: Court sentences man, wife to life imprisonment for killing father
Agency: Medininagar (Jharkhand), Aug 13 (PTI) A court in Jharkhand's Palamu district on Wednesday sentenced a man and his wife to life imprisonment for strangulating his father to death last year. The court of District and Additional Session Judge, Abhas Kumar, sentenced Rajdeo Pal and his wife Manju Devi to life imprisonment for strangulating Pal's father Sagar Mahato to death in Kaudiya village in Muffasil police station area in May, 2024. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 each on the convicts, and if they fail to cough up the amount, they will have to undergo an additional one year of imprisonment. A case in this regard was filed based on a complaint lodged by Rajdeo Pal's younger brother Ramdeo Pal.
