Where is Karen Pirie season 2 filmed?

Daily Recorda day ago
Karen Pirie is back on our screens with the second series of the ITV drama and the stunning locations in Scotland have been revealed
The second series of Karen Pirie sees the detective handed a notorious cold case that will place her under relentless examination; from her superior, from journalists, and crucially, from menacing elements that would prefer the past remained buried.

The mystery surrounding Catriona and Adam Grant has baffled detectives after the mother and son were snatched at gunpoint outside a chippy in Fife.

As Karen endeavours to uncover the truth behind their disappearance, the inquiry leads her throughout Scotland.

Discussing the filming locations and the significance of setting to the narrative, director Gareth Bryn revealed: "For me, a strong sense of place is crucial, especially because Val McDermid's writing is so specific. It's hard to stray from the world she creates in her books, so I've aimed to stay as true to it as possible.
"Karen's home in the books covers a vast area, which gave us flexibility. In the first series, she was based right in the middle of Kirkcaldy, but for this series, we moved her slightly out of the town.

"Time has passed, and with her promotion, it made sense for her to be in a slightly nicer area."
He continued: "The landscape plays a significant role in police dramas. If you're not careful, you end up with lots of interior two handers, or interview scenes but in Karen Pirie, the landscape acts as a character itself.
"We were spoiled for choice in Fife, with its stately homes and castles. For example, we used two castles: one for exterior shots of the Grant's house, and another for interiors.

"We also filmed some scenes in the caves outside St. Andrews, which turned out beautifully. The weather worked in our favour - it was surprisingly sunny, which made filming much easier," reports the Express.
Lead actress Lauren Lyle remarked: "It's always amazing to return to Scotland - it feels like a whole character in itself. The landscapes and the people all add so much to the show. I love that we're portraying a modern Scotland with a diverse mix of people and perspectives.
"Scotland's sense of humour, that dry, sarcastic tone, really shines through in the show. I also love that it feels universal - it's not just a Scottish story, but something everyone can relate to. It's a privilege to showcase Scotland as a cool, stylish, powerful place beyond the stereotypes of tartan and hills."
Chris Jenks, who portrays DC Jason 'Mint' Murray, expressed his delight at filming in his homeland: "Glasgow is such a fun place to film as well - there's loads of stuff going on. Early on, we filmed out in a little cottage in Luss which was a beautiful place to film. I'd love to work in Scotland again," he shared.

Officers considering legal action against Police Scotland over Trump visit plans

The Scottish Police Federation (SPF), which represents 98% of all police officers in Scotland, said the force has already breached health and safety standards in the run up to the visit by the US president. Thousands of officers are expected to be involved in what Police Scotland has described as a 'significant policing operation'. The White House confirmed Mr Trump will visit his golf courses in Aberdeenshire and Ayrshire between July 25 and 29. He will meet the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and the First Minister John Swinney during his private trip. The visit is likely to result in widespread protests, following similar demonstrations during his last visit to Scotland. David Kennedy, general secretary of the SPF, suggested planning for the visit has already put officers at risk. He said: 'We currently have workforce agreements in place to protect police officers and provide minimum standards of Health and Safety at work. 'Sadly, we have seen these agreements breached in the days leading to the arrival of Potus (President of the United States) and as such we are seeking legal advice regarding potential legal action against the service.' Speaking to STV News, Mr Kennedy said he had 'major concerns' about the plans to police Mr Trump's trip. He told the broadcaster: 'We do not have enough police officers in Scotland. 'Anyone that says we do, I don't know where they get those figures from. 'We know what police officers have to do day in, day out and we need more officers in Scotland. 'When these events come along that puts those officers that are here under so much pressure.' Police Scotland said earlier this month it would seek help from the Scottish and UK Governments over the 'considerable' cost of policing the visit. It has also asked for support from Northern Ireland's police force, the PSNI. There had been speculation the King would host the American leader in Scotland after a meeting was suggested at Balmoral or Dumfries House, in a letter he wrote to Mr Trump in February inviting him to make the state visit. But it is understood that both sides will wait until the president's official state visit later this year. Police Scotland's Assistant Chief Constable Emma Bond said: 'We are working closely with the Scottish Police Federation to address any concerns they may have.' A spokesperson for the PSNI said: 'There are well established processes for any UK-based police services to request support from other services at times of peak demand. 'These requests are managed via the National Police Co-ordination Centre (NPoCC) and we can confirm that PSNI have received a request to provide mutual aid to Police Scotland which we are currently assessing. 'The decision to provide officers under the mutual aid process will be considered against our own demands, ensuring that we retain the capacity to respond effectively to local issues and maintain our own operational competence.'

Pregnant Katherine Ryan 'dejected' at the thought of her baby being a boy

Pregnant comedian Katherine Ryan isn't exactly thrilled about the prospect of having a baby boy. The Canadian star, 42, is currently expecting her fourth child. She is already a proud mum of 16-year-old Violet and her children with Bobby Kootstra: son Fred, four, and daughter Fenna, two. However, she'd seemingly much prefer adding another girl to her brood, having already confirmed that baby number four will be her last. In an appearance on Heart Radio's breakfast show this morning, she confessed to hosts Jamie Theakston and Zoe Hardman that she's been 'antagonised' by men throughout her life. She also joked about youngest Fred being a 'toxic male'. Katherine, who confirmed her pregnancy last month, began: 'I have to say that I can't ever complain post-first trimester. 'I'm quite big, so I think it might be a boy, so I'm feeling dejected about that, because men have just antagonised me all my life, even before they're born.' After welcoming her kids thus far in the order of 'girl, boy, girl,' Katherine said she never finds out her baby's sex beforehand. 'It's always a surprise, and I love that. It's vintage', she stated. The Duchess star then declared that she will inevitably suffer 'gender disappointment' if her little one arrives as a boy. 'I will have it (gender disappointment) this time if it's a boy. You know what it is, my son is a toxic male; he's four years old, and he always wants to fight me,' she shared. Katherine recalled: 'I drove him to nursery the other day; he sat behind me, and he had a sword held to my throat for a while. 'Like, who's giving you weapons?' 'I didn't grow up with brothers, so it's been an adjustment for me,' she admitted. But don't worry, it's all in jest—in true Katherine style, of course—as she assured listeners: 'But I love him; he's a very special guy.' At the end of June, Katherine revealed that she kept her second pregnancy secret out of fear of losing work. She was presenting Ready to Mingle on ITV at the time and was eight months pregnant, which nobody knew. Katherine claimed that she would be unable to get insured during the project if she were pregnant. In an interview with The Sun, she said: 'During my pregnancy, I wasn't telling anyone. You can't get insured on any production if you are pregnant. Sometimes, if you are important enough, they go the extra mile. You see Holly Willoughby pregnant and that's because she's worth it. 'I tried to keep it secret. People just thought I was really fat for ages. I had to keep it quiet. I still needed to work to feed my family.' Katherine added that she didn't want to 'let down a production' if she encountered any complications during pregnancy. The beloved 8 Out of 10 Cats comic has been open about her fertility struggles in the past, having suffered three devastating miscarriages over the span of five years. 'I'm old. I used to think I was going to be the babies' dad because I'm working, but actually I'm like their grandmother,' she told OK! Magazine last November. 'My back hurts; sometimes I give them treats. I'm like a fun grandma.' The beloved stand-up star, who frequently uses the ups and downs of parenting for material in her routines, admitted that she'd been deterred from expanding her family after learning the shocking statistics about pregnancy. More Trending 'We've always gotten pregnant with the babies quite quickly. I've been pregnant five times in five years, but that also means I've had three miscarriages in five years,' she said, adding that the likelihood of miscarriage increases as a woman gets older. 'You have to find a balance between what you can personally stand and risks you're willing to take.' When confirming that she won't be having any more kids now, she told the Telling Everyone Everything podcast that while she 'loves making people' with partner Bobby, she believes it would be 'almost irresponsible to the children that [they] have and to [themselves]' should they continue. Scottish ostrich egg used to crack world record for biggest Scotch egg

An ostrich egg from a Scottish farm has been used to break the record for the biggest Scotch egg ever made. Social media chefs Phoenix Ross and Oli Paterson have been recognised for smashing the 20-year-old Guinness World Record. Isla French, co-owner of Little Rowater Farm in Banff in Aberdeenshire, said she was 'amazed' to discover one of her ostrich eggs was used. 'I appreciate good food and just love to see something from my farm be used for a Guinness World Record,' she told STV News. The chefs, from Enfield in England, bought five eggs from the farm – three of which were used in their attempt to break the record on June 17. Phoenix said he has 'wanted to break a world record since he was a kid.' Oliver told STV News: 'We looked at a few world records, and burrito was unbeatable at 2.4km long, and sausage roll was 111m. 'When we found 6.2kg scotch egg, we knew it was the one.' After one failed attempt, the duo succeeded in breaking the record with a fully intact scotch egg weighing almost 8kg – more than a bowling ball. The previous record was 6kg and stood for almost 20 years. The Scotch egg was made by being wrapped in sausage meat then covered in bread crumbs and deep fried before being put in an oven. The whole process took over 24 hours. Oliver said: 'It feels great to break the record, now 'were fingers crossed for getting in the book and setting our sights on new records.' Guinness World Record Isla French, 37, said she was stunned to learn her farm produce had played a part. 'When I sell these eggs, I never have an idea of where they go or what people do with them – this is a nice surprise,' Isla said. 'Someone's taken something from my little and got a Guinness World Record, it's just wow.' Isla French and her husband George, 42, started their family farm over ten years ago and have had an enclosure for ostriches from almost the start. They sells each egg, which weighs up to 1.8kg and contains 1.2 litres of contents, for £25. Each egg is the equivalent of 24 hen eggs. Isla French Isla said she and her family use eggs for omelettes, pancakes and baking as well as make huge fried eggs. 'We're a family farm and when our children are asked where eggs come from, they say ostriches. 'To them, that's normal.' However, she has never seen anything as 'inspiring' or as 'clever' as the ambition to make a Scotch egg with it. The French family had previously appeared on the BBC series This Farming Life. Isla French The ostrich egg holds the record for the largest egg produced by any living bird. The average example measures 6–8 in (15–20 cm) in length, 4–6 in (10–15 cm) in diameter and weighs 3 lb 10 oz–3 lb 14 oz (1.65–1.78 kg) – equal to the volume of 24 hen's eggs. It also holds the record for toughest egg produced by a bird – it can withstand the weight of a 115-kg (253-lb 8-oz) person and often having to be cracked open with a hammer. Ostrich themselves are the world's largest bird and can reach speed of up to 70km an hour. They can also live up to 75 years in captivity.
