One dead, 11 injured in stampede at Algerian football match
Crowned Algerian champion for the second consecutive year and the ninth time in its history, the celebrations of the Mouloudia Club d'Alger (MCA) turned to mourning.
'A fall of supporters from the upper stands was recorded, resulting in the death of one fan and the injury of 11 others,' the Civil Protection Department wrote on social media, adding that 10 ambulances were at the scene.
According to the sports website La Gazette du Fennec, a security barrier collapsed, resulting in many fans falling onto the lower level.
The Stade du 5 Juillet was packed as reigning champions MCA drew 0-0 against NC Magra.
As a result of the tragedy, the National Football League decided to cancel the official trophy presentation ceremony.

On internal party matters, Dr Wee said preparations were underway for the upcoming Johor MCA state convention. "The meeting also deliberated on ongoing construction works by DBKL in front of Wisma MCA, the controversial Health Ministry Rakan scheme that allows wealthier patients to skip queues for treatment, the impact of the expanded sales and service tax (SST) on consumers, and developments in the Sabah state election. 'I am grateful that MCA leaders at all levels continue to give me their full support in raising issues that matter to the people. "MCA will remain committed to defending the rights and interests of the rakyat,' added Dr Wee.

Wee tells Umno Youth chief to stop threats over Jalur Gemilang case
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong today told Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh to stop issuing threats to "personally educate" a shop owner over an improperly hoisted national flag. In a Facebook post, the MCA president said he feared public intimidation of this kind would only backfire and make Malaysians "think twice" about proudly displaying the Jalur Gemilang. Referring to remarks by Dr Akmal, who yesterday threatened to hold a "class" for a hardware store owner in Penang if he was not charged by Thursday, Wee reminded the Umno Youth chief that the country is not run on "arbitrary deadlines set by politicians". "Respect for our national flag is not in question, but enforcement must follow the rule of law, not political ultimatums or personal threats. We do not run this country on arbitrary deadlines set by politicians. "Public intimidation of this kind will only backfire. Instead of encouraging more Malaysians to proudly display the Jalur Gemilang, it will make people think twice. "Why risk flying the flag if a mistake could turn into personal threats and self-incrimination?" he said. Wee added that leaders should inspire patriotism through education, example and lawful action, rather than playing the role of self-appointed enforcers. "Turning a flag mishap into a political stunt only divides us and distracts from the real work of nation-building. "Let the authorities do their job, and let us keep politics out of the flagpole," he said. On Aug 10, police arrested the 59-year-old man following reports lodged across the country. Acting Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin had said a total of 16 police reports had been received nationwide on the incident, with 12 lodged in Penang and four in other states. A clip of the man hoisting the Jalur Gemilang upside down went viral on social media today. The video, posted on Facebook, showed the man raising the national flag incorrectly while another individual recorded the incident.

According to the Austrian tabloid Heute, the 24-year-old man had boarded the Railjet in Innsbruck and was travelling to Vienna. The Algerian national stepped off at St Pölten, about 60 kilometres west of the Austrian capital, to smoke a cigarette, leaving his luggage on board. When the train set off without him at 10.03pm (2003 GMT) on Saturday as scheduled, the 24-year-old ran alongside it and climbed between two carriages, holding on as the train picked up speed. According to Heute, the train reached speeds of 100 kilometres per hour, when the man knocked on the windows from the outside and prompted the conductor to make an emergency stop a few kilometres from where he got on. The man was then brought safely inside the carriage. The tabloid cited authorities as saying the man's actions were reckless and dangerous. Police intercepted the man in Vienna-Meidling.
