SNELLVILLE, Ga. - The city of Snellville is set to get a new community center.
Construction on the $11.3 million project will kick off at T.W. Briscoe Park next month.
What we know
Officials say the center will be around 34,000 square feet and will include two basketball courts, an indoor walking track, an outdoor pavilion, two multi-purpose activity rooms, and one aerobics room.
Construction is expected to be done in the summer of 2026.
The project is primarily funded by a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) approved in 2023. Additional funding comes via a grant from Gwinentt County.
What they're saying
"This is a project that has been in the conceptual discussion phase for over 20 years," said Mayor Barbara Bender. "It's very exciting to get to this point. We look forward to the Community Center at T.W. Briscoe Park becoming a place where people can exercise, stay fit and healthy, relax, and gather together for decades to come."
"Briscoe Park offers our visitors over 95 acres of natural, passive areas and active recreation space for programming, all in one beautiful setting," said Lisa A. Platt, Director of Parks and Recreation. "With the addition of the T.W. Briscoe Community Center, Snellville Parks and Recreation will be able to elevate our service and programming for the community and continue working toward our vision innovative programming, to provide recreational opportunities that ensure quality of life for all in mind, body and spirit."
Dig deeper
While the community center construction is ongoing, officials say certain aspects of the park will be impacted.
East Park Drive will be closed from Lenora Church Road to the four-way stop at Sawyer Parkway inside the park. The outdoor basketball courts will be closed when construction begins on May 5.
Parking for Staley Field will be in front of the Parks and Recreation Office or at the lots near the softball fields.
While the fitness trail behind the park office will be open at the start of construction, officials say it will be re-routed at certain times due to the project.
What's next
The city will host a groundbreaking event for the Briscoe Park Community on May 1.

City of Weston holds Carp Fishing Tournament
WESTON, (WBOY) — The City of Weston is reeling in anglers of all ages for its Carp Fishing Tournament this weekend along the West Fork River and its tributaries below Stonewall Dam. The event is held in conjunction with West Virginia's Free Fishing Days, which allows participants to compete without a fishing license. All participants must be at least 15 years old or accompanied by an adult to register for the competition. 'All weekend it is free fishing weekend for West Virginia, so you don't have to have a license this weekend to fish. So, it's a great opportunity to come out and catch a carp,' the City of Weston Parks and Recreation Director and Assistant City Clerk, Laura Anderson, said. The competition is a live catch-and-release tournament, and all carp must be weighed live by the final deadline of 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 7. The winner will be determined by the largest carp caught, measured by natural weight. The grand prize is a West Virginia Lifetime Hunting and Fishing License. 'Kids have a lot of fun when it comes to fishing, and they always have. It's an easy, enjoyable pastime and it brings that family together,' Anderson said. 'The kids, when they catch even the small fish it's exciting.' Lewis County welcomes new Dunkin' in Weston Organizers remind competitors that all West Virginia state fishing regulations must be observed throughout the tournament. So, whether you're a seasoned angler or a first-time fisherman, the free fishing weekend promises a fun way to enjoy the great outdoors in Weston and around the state. During the competition, the expectations for fish handling are: Land fish and remove hooks quickly to reduce time out of water. -Keep fish off the carpet and bottom of the boat to avoid injury. Wet hands and measuring tools before handling fish. Clean and disinfect live wells and weigh-in bags before each tournament to prevent disease spread. Run water pumps in live wells continually; use ice on hot days to lower temperatures. Do not alter water temperatures by more than 5 degrees from the tournament lake/river. Vent live well lids regularly for gas exchange. Handle larger fish with two hands, supporting them horizontally. Use rubber or nylon nets to protect fish slime coats. Ensure live well capacity is at least 1 gallon per pound of fish. Keep fish in live wells during weigh-ins as long as possible; avoid extended use of weigh-in bags. Never place filled weigh-in bags on hot surfaces to prevent temperature increase. The competition kicked off Friday night and wraps up Saturday night. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Whitefish works on upgrades to Armory Park
Jun. 2—Whitefish continues to chip away at a list of improvements planned for Armory Park. City Council on Monday will consider awarding a construction contract to Lipka Excavating for the fourth phase of improvements planned for the park. The contract is $153,880 for a foundation for a storage garage, grading and development of a new well. City Council meets at 7:10 p.m. at City Hall, 418 E. Second St. Armory Park is the city's largest park at 30 acres. The city Park Board updated the park's master plan in 2019 to identify phases of improvements for the park. The Parks and Recreation Department plans to complete, in fiscal year 2025, the installation of a small child playground and some identified park amenities. Completed engineering on drainage improvements around the Armory building, well development for the dog park and a storage garage foundation have been completed, notes Parks and Recreation Director Maria Butts. "We continue to work on engineering for the reconstruction of one softball field, the removal and associated drainage improvements to the second existing softball field, restrooms, playground paths and benches, and an additional south parking lot," Butts said in a memo to Council. Council is also expected to approve applying for Land and Water Conservation Fund assistance through the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks for the next phases of development of Armory Park. Changes have an estimated cost of $1.6 million. The city will seek about 45% funding for the cost of the project. AN UPDATE of the city's ordinance on snow and ice removal is on the agenda for Monday. Council will consider updating the ordinance to include additional commercial zones and adding bulb-outs to the list of areas cleared in the business district. The administrative fees for those not in compliance will be changed from 20% to a $60 minimum and $300 maximum. In addition, language in the ordinance will be revised to state that all sidewalks and paths be reasonably clear of accumulations of snow and ice and passable for pedestrians. The ordinance now says free and clear of all accumulations. "This revision is meant to address the feasibility of clearing snow and ice in Montana's climate and lessen the city's risk by creating a more reasonable and achievable expectation for property owners," Butts said in a memo to Council. The city's Parks and Recreation, Public Works and Planning and Building departments recently reviewed the ordinance to revise it, addressing any ongoing challenges associated with the ordinance. During a work session at 5:30 p.m., Council will hear an update on the 2045 Vision Whitefish Growth Policy. Deputy Editor Heidi Desch may be reached at 758-4421 or hdesch@
