Dad's favorite: Wild West beans with fiery John Wayne whiskey
We salute the Dads of the USA with my favorite Baked Beans recipe and my Dad's favorite American!

2+2 tablespoons Vegetable oil
2 cups Sweet onion, sliced julienne – I like Vidalia onions
¼ cup Unfiltered honey
¾ cup Red bell pepper, seeded and chopped
¾ cup Yellow bell pepper, chopped
¾ cup Orange bell pepper, chopped
¾ cup Green bell pepper, chopped
3 each Garlic cloves, minced
2 teaspoons Serrano pepper, minced, or Jalapeno pepper (optional)
1 pound Pork sausage, hot (can use mild if preferred)
1 pound Andouille sausage, sliced
1 pound Bacon, rough chopped
1-(15oz.) Black beans, drained
2-(22oz.) Bush's brand Southern BBQ seasoned beans
1-(22oz.) Bush's brand Smokehouse seasoned beans
1-(22oz.) Bush's brand Hot Honey seasoned beans
1 cup Barbecue sauce, use your favorite!
1 ½ tablespoons Smoked garlic seasoning
Salt and Pepper To Taste
Heat the oil in a large pot, (3-5 quart), over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking. Add the bacon and sauté until lightly browned. Next add the sausage and continue cooking until it begins to brown. Next add the bell peppers and garlic and cook, stirring frequently, until the sausage is browned, and the vegetables are tender, about 5-8 minutes. Add all the beans, barbecue sauce, honey, andouille sausage and smoked garlic seasoning. Allow to come to a nice simmer and cook an additional 5 minutes stirring frequently enough so they do not stick to the pan. Add the serrano peppers and season with salt and pepper.
In a skillet over high heat add the rest of the olive oil and the onions. Sauté rapidly over the high heat until the onions begin to brown and caramelize. At this point Remove the skillet from the heat and add in the whiskey. Ignite with a long lighter. You want to ignite the fumes and not the liquid. Gently shake the pan until the blue flame has extinguished itself. Add the onions to the pot of beans and combine. (Optionally you can then transfer to a baking dish and bake in a preheated oven at 300 degrees for 30 minutes.) Remove from oven and enjoy

Reporter's Notebook: Recalling an American WWII hero who helped fight off Nazi forces during Normandy invasion
The 81st anniversary of the famous U.S.-led D-Day invasion of Normandy, France, was recently commemorated. Less well-known are the battles during the days and weeks that followed in Normandy, which helped secure the massive beachhead, so the allies could go on and defeat Nazi Germany in World II. One of those clashes was at a bridge over a small river near the town of Sainte-Mère-Église. Paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division landed near there early on the morning of June 6, 1944. They had to hold the position against Germans threatening American forces who came ashore at Utah beach, one of the main landing sites. Reporter's Notebook: Remembering Courage On The 81St Anniversary Of D-day One of those was Iowa-born 31-year-old U.S. Army Staff Sgt. William Owens. For three days, as his unit was cut down in combat from 45 to just 12 men, he bravely helped fight off the Germans. Read On The Fox News App He fired from three different machine gun positions, threw hand grenades, commanded bazooka teams and moved from foxhole to foxhole, coordinating action. The actions of him and his men eventually knocked out four German tanks, killed 275 German soldiers and stopped the Nazis dead in their tracks. It was hailed by historians as a key battle of the Normandy invasion. On a recent day alongside the river in the now green and peaceful countryside, after years of research and lobbying at the Pentagon and in Congress, Owens was recognized for his valor in a ceremony during which his honors were upgraded to Distinguished Service Cross, the second most important medal the Army can bestow. Chris Donahue, the commanding general of the U.S. Army in Europe and Africa, told Fox News Owens' actions were "incredibly important. His youngest daughter, British-raised Susan Marrow, said, "I don't have words to describe how full my heart is and how much it means to me." As for the new recognition of Owens, he added, "It means everything, and I still don't believe it. It's still not real for me yet." This comes at a time the world remains in turmoil from Ukraine to the Mideast and beyond. While 81 years seems like a long time ago, the heroism and inventiveness displayed by Owens then is still seen as relevant today. "It is important," Morales said. "I don't think 81 years or any time is too long." Speaking from a military standpoint, Gen. Donahue noted, "We're in the middle of a transformation, and we're going to continue to do that so we live up to what they have done." University of Albany prof gives talk on 'Gender in New York During the Revolution'
PLATTSBURGH — "Gender in New York During the Revolution" will be presented by University at Albany professor Maeve Kane at 6:30 p.m. June 27 at the Plattsburgh Memorial Chapel on the Oval. How early New Yorkers experienced the Revolution and began to think of themselves as American was profoundly shaped by their understanding of gender in the 18th century. From the quiet tea table at home to violent street protests, from Indigenous peoples trade in early European settlements to petitions to the Crown, from military enlistment to pension petitions after the war, men and women understood their rights and responsibilities as citizens of what would become the American nation as rooted in their expectations of what gender meant. In this talk, Kane will discuss how gender shaped the experience of the American Revolution from the New York harbor through the Champlain Valley and Plattsburgh for Black, white and Indigenous families in this pivotal time in the nation's history. Kane is a professor of history at the University at Albany, and co-author of the 2023 textbook 'American Women's History — A New Narrative.' She appeared on 'Episode 7: The Divide' of the American Revolution podcast, 'Worlds Turned Upside Down.' Tandoori Tacos Are A Summer Snack That Belongs In Your Backyard
At first glance, you might wonder where a recipe for something called 'Tandoori Tacos' comes from. In India, a clay oven called a tandoor is used to cook meats marinated in yogurt. Tacos are, of course, one of the most beloved dishes of Mexico. The author of this recipe, Zaynab Issa, grew up in New Jersey, the child of immigrant parents from Tanzania. But as Issa explains in her recent cookbook, Third Culture Cooking: Classic Recipes For A New Generation, this recipe for Tandoori Tacos is as American as it gets. 'Most of us have a story of migration— if not you, then maybe your great-great-grandparents, but this reality remains: the culture of your homeland has mixed with the culture of others here, creating an entirely new one,' she writes. (MORE: Hyperlink more articles here) 'As I've grown up and lived here, my perspective on American food has shifted to reflect a new understanding: America itself is a third culture nation.' The 'third culture' she describes is a combination, one that is informed by the culture of a homeland as much as the new home that it belongs to. This recipe combines freely in exactly that way. Using the yogurt-marinating technique of Indian tandoori cooking to tenderize the skirt steak, the sweet pop of orange juice from Mexican carne asada and Cuban mojo. Topping it off with a few cherry tomatoes, this is a delicious lunch that belongs in a summertime backyard anywhere in America. Ingredients 1⁄4 cup (60 ml) plain whole-milk yogurt 1 tablespoon orange juice, optional 1 tablespoon plus 1⁄2 teaspoon Diamond Crystal kosher salt, divided 11⁄2 teaspoons garam masala 1 tablespoon Kashmiri red chili powder or paprika 1⁄2 teaspoon ground turmeric 6 garlic cloves, finely grated 1-inch piece ginger, finely grated 1 1⁄2 pounds (680 g) skirt steak, cut into 4 (4- to 6-inch) segments 1⁄2 medium red onion, finely chopped 1 cup (145 g) cherry tomatoes, halved or quartered 1 jalapeño, thinly sliced 1 cup (40 g) roughly chopped fresh cilantro leaves and tender stems* 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 2 tablespoons vegetable oil Flaky sea salt 12 to 16 (5-inch) tortillas, for serving Sour cream, for serving Lime wedges, for serving Instuctions To make the marinade: Combine the yogurt, orange juice, 1 tablespoon of the kosher salt, the garam masala, chili powder, turmeric, garlic, and ginger in a medium bowl. Add the steak and mix well to coat completely. Marinate the meat for at least 30 minutes or up to 4 hours at room temperature, or cover and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. To assemble: Combine the onion, tomatoes, chili, cilantro, and lime juice in a small bowl. Chill until ready to serve. Add the remaining 1⁄2 teaspoon kosher salt just before serving. Heat a large cast-iron or stainless-steel skillet over medium-high heat until very hot or smoking. Add 1 tablespoon of the vegetable oil and working with 2 steak segments at a time, sear until deeply browned on both sides and cooked to your desired doneness, about 3 minutes per side for medium (140°F/60°C on a meat thermometer). Transfer to a cutting board, sprinkle with flaky salt, and let rest for 5 minutes. Repeat with the remaining 1 tablespoon vegetable oil and 2 steaks. Meanwhile, warm the tortillas in a small nonstick skillet over medium heat for about 30 seconds per side. Transfer to a plate and cover with a tea towel to keep warm. Return to the steak and thinly slice it against the grain and then crosswise into bite-sized pieces. Arrange the steak on the tortillas and top with some of the onion mixture and sour cream.
