The Hindu5 days ago

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved two multi-tracking railway projects to ensure faster transportation of both passengers and goods, the government said on Wednesday (May 28, 2025).
It added that these projects include the third and fourth line between Ratlam-Nagda and fourth line between Wardha-Balharshah.
According to a government statement, the total estimated cost of the projects is ₹3,399 crore and will be completed by 2029-30.
'The projects are result of PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity which have been possible through integrated planning and will provide seamless connectivity for movement of people, goods and services,' the press note said.
It added, 'The two projects covering four districts across the States of Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh, will increase the existing network of Indian Railways by about 176 km. The proposed multi-tracking project will enhance connectivity to approx 784 villages having a population of about 19.74 lakh.' Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that these two projects will give a boost to infrastructure in the country in the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Chennai economic corridors, removing the traffic bottlenecks.
He added that during the third term of the Modi government, projects worth more than ₹4.5 lakh crore have been approved in the transport and infrastructure sector in the country.
The government said that these are essential routes for transportation of commodities such as coal, cement, clinker, gypsum, fly ash, containers, agriculture commodities, and petroleum products etc, hence the capacity augmentation work will result in additional freight traffic of magnitude 18.40 MTPA (million tonnes per annum).
Outlining the environmental benefits, it said that the railways, being environment-friendly and energy-efficient mode of transportation, will help in achieving climate goals and minimising logistics cost, reduce oil import (20 crore litres) and lower CO2 emissions (99 crore kg) which is equivalent to plantation of 4 crore trees.
'The projects will also generate direct employment for about 74 lakh human-days during construction. These initiatives will improve travel convenience, reduce logistic cost, decrease oil imports and contribute to lower CO2 emissions, supporting sustainable and efficient rail operations,' the government said.
'The projects would also enhance logistical efficiency by augmenting line capacity along critical routes for transportation of containers, coal, cement, agricultural commodities, and other goods. These improvements are expected to optimise supply chains, thereby facilitating accelerated economic growth,' it added.
Talking about other benefits, the press statement said that the increased line capacity will significantly enhance mobility, resulting in improved operational efficiency and service reliability for railways.
'These multi-tracking proposals are poised to streamline operations and alleviate congestion,' the press note said.

Canada, the hosts of the event this year, has not formally extended an invitation for the event in Alberta, but in any case, it is unlikely that Modi would have traveled to North America, particularly due to uncertainty regarding how the newly elected Canadian government will address India's concerns regarding the actions of Khalistan separatists.A spokesperson for the Canadian G7 declined to confirm whether Modi would receive an invitation, ToI's report (by Sachin Parashar) said. Should an invitation arrive at the last minute, India is likely to find it hard to accept due to logistical issues, potential disruptions from separatist groups, and the already strained relationsThis marks the first occasion since 2019, when France hosted the summit, that Modi will not be in attendance at this gathering of the world's most advanced economies, which has previously been seen as a testament to India's expanding global far, Canada has not officially released the names of the leaders invited to the summit, which will feature heads of government from major global economies. Supreme Court refuses to stay demolitions in Delhi's Batla House, next hearing in July

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday did not pass any interim orders on staying the proposed demolitions in the national capital's Batla House. A Bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and Satish Chandra Sharma told the residents, who had received 15-day eviction notices and apprehended imminent demolition, that they are free to avail remedies available under the law. The Justice Karol-led Bench directed that the matter be listed before the regular Bench for hearing in July. The litigants claimed that they were 'genuine residents' and 'property owners' of Khasra Nos. 271 and 279 in Batla House. They stated that their homes fall within the area now sought to be demolished on the purported ground of being outside the PM-UDAY Scheme coverage, despite having valid title documents, proof of continuous possession since before 2014, and eligibility under the Recognition of Property Rights Act, 2019. Any blanket demolition drive initiated without affording affected residents an adequate and meaningful opportunity of being heard would amount to a gross infraction of the principles of natural justice and a direct violation of fundamental rights enshrined under the Constitution of India, said the plea filed through advocate Adeel Ahmed. Underscoring the need for a fair, humane, and judicious approach before any coercive action is undertaken, the plea stated that applicants have been residing peacefully in the area in question for several decades, forming a stable and law-abiding community. It added that the 15-day eviction notices were mechanically applied to residents and properties which are neither part of Khasra No. 271 nor identified in any report as being outside the scope of regularisation. In spite of their legitimate claims, these residents have been denied an opportunity to be heard, and are now at imminent risk of displacement, said the application filed before the top court.
