In a strong rebuttal to claims that popular Durban influencer Simthande Myeza was abducted while using their platform, Bolt has issued a statement defending its reputation amidst growing public concern over safety in the e-hailing industry.
The statement comes on the heels of a distressing incident reported by Myeza's family, who allege that he was kidnapped on the night of June 17 in the Umbilo area of Durban.
"Based on the available data, we can confirm that the incident described did not occur during a Bolt trip," asserted Lerato Motsoeneng, Senior General Manager of Bolt South Africa.
"We also have strong reasons to believe that the drivers who took trips from locations relevant to the incident had nothing to do with it."
Bolt's response came amid a surge of public unease regarding the safety protocols employed by e-hailing services.
Following the reported incident, the platform launched an internal investigation to identify any possible connections between its services and the alleged abduction.
Motsoeneng explained that, according to Bolt's verified trip data, Myeza requested a ride at 3pm on the day of the incident.
The company emphasised that its algorithm matches riders and drivers in real time without any prior knowledge of the rider's identity.
The ride was completed, and the drop-off point was approximately 114 metres from Myeza's originally requested location, a variance that is considered acceptable due to GPS accuracy.
Furthermore, the records indicate that Myeza did not engage in any Bolt trip activity later that evening, despite his claims of being taken at around 8pm.
Instead, a different driver, unrelated to the initial trip, was matched to a return journey ordered from a separate account, reinforcing Bolt's assertion that the incident was not associated with their platform.
'We have officially shared all our findings with the relevant authorities and are committed to fully cooperating with them,' Motsoeneng continued.
'Our safety and operations teams continue to support law enforcement by providing all relevant trip data, maintaining secure and tamper-proof records.'
Moreover, Bolt stated that should the investigation reveal any slanderous claims against the company, it would contemplate legal action.
In light of the situation, Bolt has been in contact with Myeza to facilitate further inquiries, aiming to address any lingering concerns surrounding the safety of their service.
As the investigation progresses, Bolt remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring user safety, asserting that the well-being of its community is paramount.
The platform has reiterated its ongoing engagement with law enforcement in a bid to uphold the trust placed in it by its users.

Brazil asks Meta to remove chatbots that 'eroticize' children

Brazil's government has asked US technology giant Meta to rid its platforms of chatbots that mimic children and can make sexually suggestive remarks, the attorney general's office (AGU) announced Monday. Users of Meta's platforms, which include Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, can create and customize such bots using the company's generative artificial intelligence, AI Studio. The AGU said in a statement that Meta must "immediately" remove "artificial intelligence robots that simulate profiles with childlike language and appearance and are allowed to engage in sexually explicit dialogue." It denounced the "proliferation" of such bots in what it called an "extrajudicial notice" sent to Meta last week, adding that they "promote the eroticization of children." The document cited several examples of sexually charged conversations with bots pretending to be minors. The AGU's request does not include sanctions, but the agency said it had reminded Meta that online platforms in Brazil must take down illicit content created by their users, even without a court order. It comes at a time of outrage in the South American nation over a case of alleged child sexual exploitation by Hytalo Santos, a well-known influencer who posted content on Instagram featuring partially naked minors taking part in suggestive dances. Santos was arrested last week as part of an investigation into "exposure with sexual connotations" to adolescents, and his Instagram account is no longer available.

Pretoria CBD car theft suspect denied bail

A 40-year-old man, suspected of vehicle theft, was denied bail at the Pretoria Magistrate's court on August 18. The case has been referred for further investigation. He was arrested at the corner of Paul Kruger and Visagie streets on August 15. Police spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise said, 'The arrest comes after the two officers of the crime prevention unit spotted a white Nissan bakkie driving recklessly. The driver noticed the police were pursuing him, and in an attempt to flee, he collided with a delivery truck. The car was cornered, and as the members searched, they noticed broken implements inside the vehicle.' When the suspect was brought to the station, it was discovered that he was no stranger to encounters with law enforcement. 'Upon arrival at the station, the person's identification verification was conducted. It was discovered that he had been previously arrested for numerous cases ranging from rape, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, possession of house-breaking implements, car hijacking, and reckless and negligent driving in the past,' Nkhumise added. Station Commander Brigadier Hlengani Mashaba welcomed the arrest by his officers and urged residents to be cautious of where they leave their vehicles parked in the inner city. He continued, 'We believe that this might lead to a recovery of some… stolen motor vehicles, and even finding a syndicate.' Empangeni drivers arrested in weekend blitz

Of the 77 motorists arrested in KZN for driving under the influence of alcohol over the weekend, 11 are from Empangeni. With a notable rise in fatal crashes during payday weekends, specifically on the 15th and 25th, the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), in partnership with SAPS, Durban Metro Police, uMsunduzi Traffic, and other traffic officers across various municipalities, worked tirelessly from Friday night into the early hours of Saturday to enforce the Zero Tolerance, No Nonsense and Alufakwa campaign. ALSO READ: KZN traffic officials clamp down on lawlessness With more than 30 road fatalities in August thus far, Transport MEC Siboniso Duma has instructed the teams to show 'no mercy' to those found breaking the law. Research and data from the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) indicates 27.1% of fatal crashes are related to drunk driving, while the Road Accident Fund (RAF) said it paid out R43b in injury benefits to accident survivors aged between 15 and 34 from 2020 to 2022, as well as an additional R2.86b in youth death-related benefits. On a mission to save the youth of tomorrow by ensuring the roads are free of negligent and irresponsible drivers, sting operation teams were led by a female commander, with teams consisting mainly of women enforcement officers. They achieved the following: • 77 motorists arrested for drinking and driving • 251 vehicles were stopped • 11 motorists had no driver's licences • 2 vehicles 'resembling moving coffins' were suspended and removed from the roads In addition to the 11 arrests in Empangeni, other apprehensions included 29 in Durban, 17 in Pietermaritzburg, 12 in Kokstad and five in Ladysmith.
