If you're craving a cleverly written mystery with a generous dose of quirky humor, BritBox's newest original should cement itself on your watchlist.
Premiering this week (March 20), "Ludwig," starring British comedian David Mitchell ("Peep Show"), has quickly captured the attention of audiences, already becoming one of the most talked-about streaming debuts of the month.
Created by Mark Brotherhood ("Safe House"), this series follows reclusive crossword-setter John 'Ludwig' Taylor (Mitchell), whose quiet life is upended when his twin brother disappears. Forced to step into his brother's shoes, Ludwig must try and get to the bottom of the mystery among others, armed only with his puzzle-solving abilities.
For anyone drawn to smart mysteries with quirky characters or good, old-fashioned BBC dramas with plenty of questions to chew on, "Ludwig" is an essential pick. Here's everything you need to know about BritBox's latest original before you dive in.
John "Ludwig" Taylor (David Mitchell) is a socially awkward crossword setter who has his quiet life unexpectedly disrupted by the sudden disappearance of his identical twin brother, Detective James Taylor (Mitchell)
Ludwig finds himself forced into the world of police investigations when he decides to secretly assume his brother's identity to find out what happened to him. Armed only with his talent for puzzle-solving and without any real-world investigative experience, Ludwig finds himself dealing with a whole lot of other cases than just his brother's.
Ludwig gradually realizes there's something far more sinister beneath the surface of his sibling's disappearance. With each clue he finds, he has to consider the possibility that his twin brother held many secrets, perhaps dangerous ones, that might just put him and his quiet life in danger.
'Ludwig' has amassed a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 15 reviews, with audiences giving it a 94% rating (as of this writing).
That's an impressive achievement for a British series on a niche service like BritBox — and it looks like it'll gather even more fans as it continues to air with additional episodes beyond its first two.
The New York Times' Margaret Lyons called it a "fun British version of 'Monk'": The procedural aspects here are clever and twisty, and the serialized mystery of James's disappearance is an ample engine."
Meanwhile, The Guardian's Lucy Mangan said: "David Mitchell is as brilliantly awkward as ever as a puzzle setter who poses as his twin in order to find out why his brother has disappeared. It's enjoyably gentle case-of-the-week TV."
Collider's Maggie Boccella wrote: "There's something to be said for the underdogs, the ones we put on after the 'Severances' and the 'Yellowjackets' when we need something fresh that hasn't been analyzed to death — and if nothing else, 'Ludwig' has freshness."
Do you love "Sherlock"? Are you addicted to British dramas? Do you love a dash of weirdness in your amateur sleuth shows? Then yes, you need to watch "Ludwig".
Just like the modern vision of Holmes himself, Ludwig Taylor has a remarkable intellect and a unique way of seeing the world, though his method involves solving cryptic crosswords and intricate puzzles rather than using traditional deduction. His transition from puzzle creator to reluctant detective is a lot like the eccentric brilliance and quirks found in Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock as well.
And it's perfect for anyone who loves a good bit of detective work and a laugh. "Ludwig" not only serves up fun, thrilling mysteries but there's plenty to giggle at. Like similar shows "Jonathan Creek'" or "Death in Paradise," there's plenty of interplay between smart, high-level puzzles and clues and the kind of witty banter you'd expect to hear from a BBC hit.
You can stream the first two episodes of "Ludwig" on Britbox, with additional episodes to debut weekly. And if you like what you see, there's plenty more on the platform that might strike your fancy, too.

Jeremy Clarkson bans pub customer over £24 pie complaint

Jeremy Clarkson has banned a customer from his Oxfordshire pub after they criticised menu prices online — with the TV presenter bluntly declaring they were no longer welcome. The former Top Gear host, 64, runs The Farmer's Dog in Oxfordshire, which serves produce from his Diddly Squat Farm. But when a customer recently took to social media to complain about paying £24 for a pie and vegetables, Clarkson didn't hold back. 'Thought @JeremyClarkson wanted an affordable pub for customers,' the diner posted on X. '£24 for pie and veg is a bit much.' Another user chimed in, suggesting that cheaper US beef imports would help lower prices, adding: 'Dead weight for British beef is far too expensive £6.89/kg for R4L down from the record high £6.98/kg earlier in the month. 'I can't wait till we get US beef cuts here because British beef industry is now taking the piss at those prices.' Clarkson's reply was short and sharp: 'You are now banned from the pub.' This isn't the first time the broadcaster has blacklisted individuals from his establishment. Past figures barred from his pub include Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Clarkson's former Top Gear co-hosts James May and Richard Hammond — though those bans are widely assumed to be tongue-in-cheek. Clarkson has previously defended the pub's prices by emphasising his commitment to using only British ingredients and supporting local farmers — even if that means omitting popular products like ketchup, coffee, lemonade or Coca-Cola from the menu. A Birmingham Live reporter made the surprising revelation while visiting the Oxfordshire pub — which Clarkson opened last August — for a Sunday roast. 'You can't have coffee, ketchup or lemonade — there's a sign outside the pub explaining they don't serve coffee or ketchup,' they said. 'The people at the table next to us asked for a latte but were politely refused. I also asked for a cider shandy when we arrived but staff explained they don't sell lemonade.' Last month, the Clarkson's Farm star revealed US comedian Ellen DeGeneres has visited the joint since relocating to the Cotswolds. The Ellen DeGeneres Show host, 66, fled the US after Donald Trump was elected President. She moved to an Oxfordshire village with her wife, Portia de Rossi, 51, in November. Clarkson praised the star, saying she was 'very friendly' and 'lovely' to the staff at his pub. 'She lives in the village where our pub is. Absolutely I welcome them all,' he told The Mirror. 'Everyone said she has been cancelled but she seemed nice when she came to the pub, the staff said she was very friendly and lovely. I am not going to believe what I read online. She seemed lovely.' Clarkson previously admitted his pub 'is a total disaster' due to theft, high parking charges and toilet mishaps. He revealed in his Times column in December that he is forced to spend £27,000 a month on parking and traffic marshals 'to keep the council off our back'.

BBC Content Chief Latest: Race To Replace Charlotte Moore Nears Final Two, As Zai Bennett Drops Out & New Candidates Emerge

EXCLUSIVE: In around a week's time, the contest to replace BBC content boss Charlotte Moore will become a two-person run-off. Before then, we are told there are around five to six candidates in the mix. Two of those are believed to be frontrunner Kate Phillips and BBC iPlayer and channels boss Dan McGolpin. Another pair are understood to be Nat Geo's Tom McDonald and a new name, David Brindley, the Chief Creative Officer of Destination X producer Twofour. There is thought to be at least one other dark horse candidate, possibly two. The BBC declined to comment. Previously deemed a frontrunner, Bennett has always been positioned as a strong candidate but has just got his feet under the table at BBC Studios, initiating a major restructure in the past few weeks and bringing in several new lieutenants. He is the latest big name to exit the race, following the likes of Banijay UK boss Patrick Holland, Netflix's Anne Mensah and Apple TV+ executive Jay Hunt. In around a week to 10 days' time, Deadline understands the remaining candidates will be whittled down to two, at which point they will be grilled in front of an interview panel of senior BBC executives, likely including Director General Tim Davie. Unscripted supremo Phillips remains the one to beat, with BBC insiders and highly-regarded producers pulling for her to get the job. A Netflix-shaped spanner was thrown in the works earlier this week with a report in UK TV trade Broadcast that said she is being wooed by the streamer. Deadline revealed the exit of Netflix unscripted head Ben Kelly several weeks back. Netflix UK is on quite the tear and the Broadcast article dropped on the day the SVoD poached Channel 4's film and TV drama boss Ollie Madden. McGolpin is no less senior than Phillips but Phillips has the programme-making chops and has been acting up in Moore's place over the past few months. McDonald and Brindley are old friends from BBC commissioning, where they successfully ran the specialist factual and factual entertainment departments respectively for several years. The highly-rated McDonald has been touted as a possible Moore replacement since the contest began. He has handy experience working in the States as Disney-owned Nat Geo's EVP Global Factual & Unscripted and has worked with huge stars including David Attenborough and Idris Elba. He is known, however, to have built a life in America and is happy in his current role. Twofour's Brindley is thought to be one of the other contenders. He has been overseeing a successful period for the ITV Studios-owned indie that has included landing the £20M ($27M) contract to make Destination X for the BBC and NBC, new BBC reality franchise I Kissed a Boy/Girl and a historic third series for Apple TV+ doc The Reluctant Traveler. As with McDonald, Brindley is thought to be happy in his current employ. Notably, Phillips, McDonald and Brindley skew heavily unscripted, leaving the feeling that there could still be a big name from the drama world to emerge. Led by search firms Grace Blue and Ibison, the process is moving quickly, with the BBC appearing keen to have a name in place after Moore left the building last week. Moore will become CEO of The Crown producer Left Bank Pictures and creative director of international production at Sony Pictures Television. Stay tuned for more. ‘Downton Abbey' star will bring her play about Ava Gardner to Chicago

Elizabeth McGovern, the American actress best known for playing Lady Cora in the British TV and movie franchise 'Downton Abbey,' will star in a show headed to Chicago that is based series of real-life interviews given by the Hollywood actress Ava Gardner. Titled 'Ava: The Secret Conversations,' the show was written by McGovern and is directed by Moritz Von Stuelpnagel. Aaron Costa Ganis also appears in the piece, which will run Sept. 24 to Oct. 12 at the Studebaker Theater in Chicago's Fine Arts Building. Karl Sydow is the producer of this commercial production, managed by Pemberley Productions, which has brought several shows to Chicago. McGovern becomes the third 'Downton Abbey' star to work in Chicago theater, following Brendan Coyle, who appeared at the Goodman Theatre, and Lesley Nicol, whose solo show was performed at the Greenhouse Theatre Center. 'Ava: The Secret Conversations' has previously been seen at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles and NY City Center in New York. It is drawn from the series of interviews Gardner gave to the British writer Peter Evans (played by Ganis) between 1988 and 1990, wherein the Golden Age star spoke of her various marriages to Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw and Frank Sinatra, as well as her famously turbulent relationship with Howard Hughes. Evans had been hired to write Gardner's autobiography, but she ended up firing him. His book detailing the interview was not published until 2013, and has been re-imagined by McGovern for the stage. McGovern will also be seen this fall on screen in 'Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.'
