KRV protests against MES stance
Belagavi: Activists of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV Shivaramegowda faction) staged a protest in Belagavi on Tuesday, condemning the stance of Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) regarding the mandatory implementation of the Kannada language on signboards in the city.
Demanding the dismissal of Ravi Salunke from the membership of Belagavi City Corporation and a ban on MES, KRV activists protested and submitted a memorandum to the district administration. The activists, who marched from Channamma Circle to DC's office, raised slogans against the MES. The activists said MES has submitted a petition to the district administration not to implement mandatory Kannada in nameplates. The district administration should not pay attention to this and should speed up the work of mandatory installation of Kannada in nameplates.MES leaders intentionally install nameplates in Marathi during Ganesh Utsav and Dussehra. The district administration should not allow this. Kannada should be made mandatory on nameplates as per the govt order. Even so, if nameplates are installed in Marathi, they will have to be painted black, they warned.

Actor Darshan to be arrested again as Supreme Court cancels bail in Renukaswamy murder case
The Supreme Court cancelled the bail granted to Kannada actors Darshan Thoogudeepa and Pavithra Gowda and five others in connection with the Renukaswamy murder case on Thursday. A Supreme Court bench of Justice JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan pronounced the order on an appeal filed by the Karnataka government against the High Court order. "The order is set aside, and the bail granted to the accused is set aside," the Supreme Court said. Police will now arrest the accused, Hindustan Times reported. The Supreme Court held that the Karnataka High Court order that granted bail to the accused suffers from 'perversity' and it went into witness' statement which is the prerogative of the trial court, Bar and Bench reported. It further noted that 'granting bail in such a serious case without adequately considering the nature and gravity of the offence, the accused role, the tangible interference with the trial are amongs perserve and unwarranted exercise discretion.' "The high court order reflects mechanical exercise of power... The grant of bail will impact the trial, and the witnesses can be influenced," the Supreme Court ruled. The court said, "Justice Mahadevan has pronounced a very erudite judgment. It is ineffable. It conveys a message that however big the accused may be, he or she is not above the law." "It contains a strong message that the justice delivery system at any level should ensure at any cost that rule of law is maintained. No man is above law or below it. Nor do we ask anyone's permission when we obey it," the court said. "The need of the hour is to maintain rule of law at all times," Justice Pardiwala added," the bench added. The Supreme Court warned against providing special treatment to the accused in jail. "The day we come to know that the accused persons are being provided 5-star treatment, the first step would be to place the superintendent into suspension along with all other officials," the bench cautioned. Darshan Thoogudeepa is accused of torturing and murdering Renukaswamy, a fan of actor Pavithra Gowda. The dead body of 33-year-old auto-driver Renukaswamy was found on June 9. It was alleged that he died owing to injuries sustained in an attack carried out on Darshan's instructions. Darshan had allegedly abducted the deceased from Chitradurga and had him tortured for three days in a shed in Bengaluru in June 2024. Darshan allegedly called upon his fans to accost and kidnap Renukaswamy for making derogatory comments against Pavithra Gowda on social media. Darshan was arrested on June 11 last year. On October 30 last year, the Karnataka High Court granted him interim bail for six weeks on medical grounds. Subsequently, it granted regular bail to Darshan, Pavithra and five other accused on December 13, 2024.

Ramalinga Reddy calls for Kannada Shloka training in Muzrai temples
Bengaluru: Muzrai Minister Ramalinga Reddy announced that priests in Karnataka's Muzrai temples will be instructed to learn and recite shlokas in Kannada during worship. The directive aims to promote the use of the Kannada language in religious rituals. During the Legislative Council's Question Hour, BJP member Bharathi Shetty pointed out that while Tamil Nadu temples recite shlokas in Tamil, Karnataka temples still predominantly use Sanskrit. She suggested that Karnataka temples should also introduce Kannada shloka recitation, citing the example of Hiremagalur Kannan, known for his Kannada recitations. Shetty further raised concerns about cleanliness in temples and urged for maintenance on the lines of Tirupati. Responding, Reddy said that after years of delay, certificates for Agama training are now being issued, and priests will be guided to practise Kannada shlokas. He added that from August 15, plastic will be banned in temples, alongside stricter cleanliness measures. State to act on bike taxi services as per High Court order Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy has stated that the government will comply with the High Court's order regarding the reinstatement of bike taxi services in the state. Responding to BJP MLC D.S. Arun in the Legislative Council, Reddy explained that bike taxi services, including Rapido, were halted due to rule violations by operating companies. Arun had argued that the suspension deprived many young people of employment opportunities and inconvenienced commuters, noting that there are about 8 lakh gig workers in the state. Reddy recounted that in 2018, discussions were held on the pros and cons of bike taxi services, and in 2019 a committee led by the Metro MD recommended against them. However, in 2021, battery-powered vehicles were allowed. The current suspension, he said, is due to operators flouting regulations. 'The matter is in court, and a verdict is expected in a few days. The government will act in accordance with the court's decision,' he assured.
