Skyscanner introduces new ‘DROPS' feature

Trade Arabia11-04-2025
Skyscanner has introduced DROPS, its brand-new feature to help travellers in the Middle East find the best deal for their 2025 travels.
During its initial pilot phases, Malé was ranked as the number one destination for the biggest average flight cost savings among UAE passengers in January, while Cairo topped the list for Saudi Arabia in March.
DROPS is an exclusive app-only feature that uses push notifications to provide relevant, timely and personalised flight drops, giving travellers more reasons to search and book via the app time and time again.
In the UAE, Malé was the top dropped destination, followed by Jeddah and Mumbai, with customers saving an average of £264 ($337.92) (AED 1,228) per trip to Malé. In Saudi Arabia, Cairo, Istanbul, and Baku were the most frequently dropped destinations in March, with travellers saving an average of £142 (SAR697), and some deals offering up to £828 (SAR4064.47) in savings.
Dubai and Amman also appeared as top dropped destinations for Saudi-based travellers, reflecting strong intra-Gulf travel demand. Meanwhile, international routes from Saudi Arabia with the highest savings—though less frequent—included Malé (£732, SAR 3,593), Casablanca (£576, SAR 2,627), Kuala Lumpur (£553, SAR 2,714), Washington D.C. (£491, SAR 2,410) and Munich (£415, SAR 2,040).
Wednesday was the most popular day for DROPS in the UAE, with 38% of early bird deals published before 9:00am**, while in Saudi Arabia, DROPS were released consistently throughout the day, with Monday emerging as the most active day—highlighting the differences in user behaviour and travel planning patterns across both markets.
The UAE also remained a highly attractive destination for international travellers. In Germany and India, Dubai ranked second for biggest price drops, with average savings of AED 1,032 and AED 650 respectively, while Abu Dhabi (AED 814) and Jeddah (AED 410) featured in the top three dropped destinations for Italian travellers.
Users can access new DROPS every day, featuring a collection of flights from a nearby airport that have dropped in price by at least 20% that day (compared to the previous seven days). These daily deals are tailored to each user's nearest airport, making flight discovery easier, faster, and more budget-friendly. Travellers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia can now access these exclusive offers directly through the Skyscanner app.
With Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Jeddah being among the top-ranked destinations across several global markets, it reaffirms the region's position as a leading tourism hub. The UAE's commitment to strengthening its tourism sector—targeting 40 million visitors by 2031 and aiming to contribute AED 450 billion to the national GDP, while Saudi Arabia is undergoing a transformation that places tourism at the heart of its future as part of its Vision 2030. Both strategies are aligned with rising demand trends seen through Skyscanner's DROPS data.
Ayoub El Mamoun, Travel Expert at Skyscanner, said: 'The all-new DROPS feature is an exciting and innovative addition to Skyscanner's offerings, and this feature is just the next step to help inspire travellers to explore and book their trip with ease and confidence – no matter the budget.
'In its pilot phase, we have witnessed a strong interest in travel to the UAE from other countries around the world, which signifies the country's position as a leading tourism destination. Furthermore, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is accelerating its efforts to support the growth of its tourism sector by attracting visitors to the country. As both nations continue to grow rapidly, we anticipate there will be more demand for people to visit the UAE and Saudi Arabia with these trips contributing greatly to their national economies.'

UAE Corporate Tax: Businesses Must Register July 31 Or Face $2,723 Penalty

The Federal Tax Authority (FTA) has renewed its call for Corporate Tax registrants who have not yet registered to submit their registration applications, stating that filing their first Tax Returns through the 'EmaraTax' digital tax services platform will enable them to benefit from the Penalty Waiver Initiative for Late Corporate Tax Registration. The initiative applies to Corporate Taxpayers and certain exempt persons who are required to register with the FTA. In a press release issued today, the FTA revealed that as of today, the number of beneficiaries from the Penalty Waiver Initiative for Late Corporate Tax Registration has reached more than 33,900. The FTA indicated that Thursday, July 31, will be the final deadline to benefit from the initiative for the majority of Corporate Tax payers whose first Tax Period aligns with the calendar year from January 1 to December 31, 2024. To qualify, they must complete all procedures related to submitting their registration applications and filing their Corporate Tax Returns through the 'EmaraTax' platform before the end of July 2025. The FTA confirmed that failure to meet the requirements and completing the procedures by July 31 will result in ineligibility for the waiver and the imposition of a late registration penalty of AED 10,000 for non-registered persons. The authority clarified that to be exempt from the late registration penalty, the taxable person or exempt person required to register must submit their Corporate Tax Return or annual declaration within a period not exceeding seven months from the end date of their first Tax Period or financial year, instead of the standard nine-month deadline. The FTA emphasised that the Penalty Waiver Initiative applies only to the first Tax Period of the taxable person or exempt persons who are required to register with the FTA. The FTA issued a public clarification on the Waiver Initiative, which can be accessed through the link 'Waiver of Administrative Penalty for Failure to File Corporate Tax Registration within the Prescribed Period.' The public clarification includes a detailed explanation of the conditions to benefit from the waiver of the Late Registration Penalty, as well as the refund mechanism in cases where a penalty has already been paid. The document provides examples of how to benefit from the initiative in different scenarios. The public clarification provides an explanation for those eligible to benefit from the initiative, as well as certain exempt persons who are required to register for Corporate Tax. Within the clarification, the FTA highlighted that if the Person within the scope of this initiative meets the conditions to benefit from the waiver – namely, filing the Tax Return within seven months from the end of the first Tax Period or filing an annual declaration within seven months from the end of its first Financial Year – they will be exempt from the 'Late Registration Penalty' automatically without the need to submit a Reconsideration or Penalty Waiver request. In case the Late Registration Penalty has already been paid, the amount of AED 10,000 shall be automatically credited to that Person's 'EmaraTax' Corporate Tax account, which enables them to use the amount to settle other tax obligations or request a refund from the FTA by submitting a refund application.

Why is Gold in Dubai Cheaper Than in India?

Dubai is a global citizen's paradise. Known for its modern architecture, luxury shopping experiences, vibrant nightlife and must-see landmarks like Burj Khalifa. Dubai also boasts of its world-famous gold souks that have earned it the nickname 'City of Gold'. As if this association with gold were not enough, there's another reason Dubai is very popular. Gold in Dubai is cheaper than it is in India. Is this really true? We will come back to this. First, let's understand Dubai's association with gold. It may surprise you to know that Dubai does not have a single gold mine of its own. Then, where does it get its gold? All that glittering gold that you see in Dubai is sourced primarily from African nations, Turkey, Switzerland and Russia. And who are the buyers? After sourcing from global gold mines and refining it, Dubai gold finds buyers in India and China, the two largest gold-consuming countries in the world. Now, before we compare India and Dubai gold prices, let us understand the carats and purity levels of gold available in Dubai. Carat or Karat is the term used to measure the gold content or purity. 24 carat gold is made up of 24 parts pure gold, whereas 22 carat gold is made up of 22 parts gold and 2 parts alloyed metals. Similarly, for 21 and 18 carat where other metals added constitute 3 and 6 parts. In the West, the karat is expressed in fineness. For example, 24 carat gold is expressed as 1,000 parts out of 1,000 pure or fineness 1.000. Similarly, 22 carat is expressed as 22 divided by 24, which will give you a fineness of . you multiply .9166 by 1,000, it gives 916.66 level of purity. Now, for calculating fineness of 21 karat, 21 is divided by 24 to arrive at .875 fineness and similarly, for 18 karat it is .750 fineness. The purity level for 21 karat and 18 karat gold is defined as Gold 875 and Gold 750. So, 22 carat gold can be depicted as fineness of .9166 or 916.66 level of purity. The Dubai Jewellery Group (DJG), a premier trade association for the Dubai jewellery industry, has a simpler and transparent way of disseminating real-time gold prices for consumers. Most jewellery outlets display the prevailing 'Suggested Retail Jewellery Price' on screen, which are digitally updated 3 times every day. As an Indian, you need to have the United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED) to buy gold in Dubai. At the current foreign exchange rate, you need Rs 23.50 to buy 1 AED. On July 23, one gram 24 carat gold was quoted at AED 405.25, approximately Rs 9,523. Comparatively, gold in India was trading higher at Rs 9,888. As the purity of gold falls, so do the price. 22K traded at AED 375.25, 21K at AED 359.75 and 18K at AED 308.50. If you are buying gold worth Rs 2 lakh (about 20 grams) in Dubai, it could help you save over Rs 7,000. Gold price today in India is Rs 99,450. For the first time in 2025 gold crossed Rs 1 lakh on July 23 to create an all-time high level. Bringing gold from Dubai may not be simple unless you stick to the laws of the land. I have written about this earlier. Just to recap… Gold can be transported in checked baggage up to one kilogram, with a minimum six-month overseas stay required for one kilogram, if disclosed and duty paid. Indian women are allowed to bring up to 40 grams of gold or up to a maximum value of Rs 1 lakh, while men are allowed to bring up to 20 grams of gold or up to a maximum value of Rs 50,000 without paying any duty. Got kids? Children under 15 can bring 40 grams of gold ornaments up to a maximum value of Rs 1 lakh without paying customs duty. And make sure that the weight of gold, including ornaments, should not exceed 1 kg. per passenger. Needless to say, keep all purchase vouchers handy at the airport. Gold in Dubai is cheaper than in India because of taxes. There's no GST on gold in Dubai. But, there's 5% of value-added tax (VAT). Not to worry. Dubai makes sure its tax-free shopping for you. You can claim a full refund of VAT. There are time limits to adhere to for such refunds. If you bring gold from Dubai or any other location, you will have to pay customs duty. The rate will depend on the quantity and the gender. Here are the customs duty rates on gold: 3% for 20 to 50 grams for males/ 40 to 100 grams for females and children 6% for 50 to 100 grams for males/ 100 to 200 grams for females and children 10% for over 100 grams for males/ over 200 grams for female and children For commercial use, gold imported into India is subjected to GST, Agriculture Infrastructure Development Cess (AIDC) and Integrated Goods and Service Tax (IGST), all adding up to the final in-hand price for consumers. Indians visiting Dubai for vacation end up buying gold due to the significant price gap between the two countries. For Indians, 24-carat gold can be 5% to 7% cheaper in Dubai. But wait! You also need to ensure the gold you buy in Dubai is pure. So, just as Hallmarking is a must in India, ensure that gold purchased in Dubai has the Dubai Central Laboratory Department issued Bareeq Certification. Alam, who works as a water salesman and has been residing in Sharjah for the past four years, joined a 20-member group to purchase his first-ever Big Ticket entry as part of Series 277. When the draw host Bouchra tried calling him to share the good news, Alam didn't answer—twice. But once the message reached him, the young expat couldn't hold back his excitement. 'I'm really happy to hear about my win,' Alam said, beaming with joy. He also confirmed that he plans to split the prize money evenly among the group that contributed to the ticket. As for trying his luck again, Alam was quick to respond: 'Yes.' His message to others dreaming of a windfall? 'Take a chance—as anything is possible with a bit of luck.' The Big Ticket July promotion is approaching its grand finale, with the highly anticipated AED 20 million jackpot draw scheduled for August 3 in Abu Dhabi. Along with the top prize, six more participants will each receive AED 50,000 as consolation rewards. Tickets are still available online and at official counters in Zayed International Airport and Al Ain Airport, with bundle offers continuing until the end of the month. With stories like Alam's, the dream of striking it rich in the UAE remains very much alive.
