Papon Reveals How Song Jiyein Kyun Changed Everything For Him In Bollywood
According to Papon, Rohan Sippy met him after his performance in Mumbai, and later, Pritam called him to offer the breakthrough song.
It was the song Jiyein Kyun from Dum Maaro Dum that catapulted Papon to fame. Composed by Pritam and written by Jaideep Sahni, the emotional track opened doors to numerous opportunities, establishing him as one of the most sought-after singers in the industry. Reflecting on the pivotal role of the melancholic tune in his career, Papon recently shared in an interview that music maestro Pritam offered him the song after being impressed by his independent Assamese album, Jonaki Raati.
Talking to Hindustan Times, Papon admitted, 'Jiyein Kyun was my first big break in Bollywood. Technically, the first song I sang in Bollywood was Sajana from Let's Enjoy (2004), but Jiyein Kyun changed everything for me."
The singer mentioned that Bollywood was never his priority before Jiyein Kyun came his way. Looking back, Papon recalled that he was offered the song after a performance in Mumbai. He shared that director Rohan Sippy approached him after the show, and music composer Pritam called him to appreciate his talent before offering him the breakthrough track that would define his career.
As the conversation progressed, Papon also shared how Jiyein Kyun challenged the industry's vocal norms at the time of its release. Unlike other playback singers, Papon's earthy tone stood out, making it difficult for others to place his voice against the typical Bollywood hero sound, which was often more polished and conventional.
Papon continued, 'Back then, everyone was singing high. I was the only newcomer who sang that low. I actually recorded it seven semitones lower than it was originally composed by Pritam da, and that distinct depth became both a unique strength and, initially, a challenge as well. It was difficult to place a voice like mine against the typical Bollywood hero."
The depth of the song struck a chord with the audience, eventually becoming an anthem for lovers introspecting after heartbreak. Concluding, Papon expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Pritam and Rohan Sippy for the opportunity. He remarked, 'It's one of my absolute favourites to sing live. I sincerely thank Pritam Da and Rohan Sippy for trusting my voice."
The Assamese singer has many hits, including Moh Moh Ke Dhaage (Dum Laga Ke Haisha), Kyon (Barfi!), Humnava (Hamari Adhuri Kahani) and Bulleya (Sultan) to his credit.

Pankaj Tripathi is Madhav Mishra once again. The actor has returned as the beloved lawyer for the fourth time in the new season of Criminal Justice. In a candid chat with Hindustan Times, the actor opens up about returning to the character and avoiding being typecast. The fourth season of Criminal Justice, titled A Family Matter, sees Madhav Mishra fighting his toughest case yet. Talking about returning to the familiar character, Pankaj says, "It is a bit like meeting an old friend, too, and also like remembering something you once studied." Ask him about how he makes sure the character does not fall prey to repetition, and Pankaj replies, 'That is all due to the writing. As an actor, you can pick the best available path to portray a character. There, as a choice, you can avoid the cliches and pandering to the audience.' Madhav Mishra is a role that he has played the most number of times on screen. But his critics argue that a little bit of Pankaj Tripathi in most roles he does. The actor addresses that and says, "There is a problem in our Hindi film industry that in the days of struggle, there is no work. There were 2-3-year periods between 2004 and 2012 when I did not even face a camera. I could not shoot. After that, I got some small roles, and slowly, I became bigger. A lot of offers came my way. Jab bhookh zyada lagi ho to over-eating karna sambhav hai (When you are famished, there is a possibility of over-eating). So, I overate. I did a lot of work. That creates the challenge of keeping things different. You try, that's all you can do." But he does not agree that all his roles are similar. "If you look at 10 paintings from one painter from afar, they look similar, because he has his own style. But the moment you go closer, you see minor differences. That is my effort too, to bring that minor difference," argues Pankaj, adding, "The important thing is to work less. But when you do a lot of work, my effort is not to lose my touch that the audience likes, but the characters still feel different." Criminal Justice: A Family Matter also stars Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Surveen, Asha Negi, Khushboo Atre, Mita Vashisht, and Shweta Basu Prasad. The Royals actor Lisa Mishra defends show amid polarising reactions: 'I'm just glad people tuned in'
Netflix's The Royals is the most talked-about Indian show currently. Ever since it dropped on the streaming platform a couple of weeks ago, the show has dominated trends worldwide. However, it has also elicited a lot of polarising reactions from critics and viewers alike. Many have criticised the show's depiction of royal families, as well as the writing and performance. But Lisa Mishra, who plays Nikki on the show, takes it all with a pinch of salt. In a chat with Hindustan Times, the musician-turned-actor talks about the show's reception and more. Naturally, there was an intimacy coordinator on set. Even Lisa made use of the intimacy coordinator for a kiss scene she had with Kavya Trehan in the show. Talking about the experience, she says, "I had always assumed an intimacy coordinator would be telling you where to place your hand and such technical stuff. But it's not about that at all. It is more about feeling safe and comfortable. In our case, Kavya and I had our scenes and our intimacy coordinator - Aastha - spoke to us and got us talking about our comfort levels and boundaries. That was our prep, and we talked so much that by the time, we went to shoot, we were there mentally." Before taking the acting plunge, Lisa was a singer-songwriter. She still performs and has just recently released a new single. Yet, she is certain about one thing - she doesn't want to play a musician on screen, at least not yet. "I consciously decided to take up roles that don't require me to be a singer or musician," she says, adding, "I have sung for shows I am part of, but that is me contributing to the soundtrack as a musician. I don't want my acting career to be an extension of that. So, whether it is Call Me Bae or The Royals, the effort is to do something different. And I will keep trying to do that."
